ABOUT OUR PROPERTY:
All of our buildings are ecologically built and are adorned with hand-crafted works of art from Pacific and Asian countries. All our rooms have ocean views, and we are surrounded by lush jungle, ponds, flower gardens, fruit trees, and a nearby waterfall (reached by a short downhill climb) which flows into natural pools for swimming from which you can gaze upon the breath-taking view of the valley.
Our land is a wonderful place to wander and explore: you can take a short walk passing the chickens, the homes of our bees, countless species of flowers and plants and stop by our temples, where you can rest, relax and meditate. For the adventurer, our ocean trail is a moderately challenging cliff trail and the hike takes about a half an hour to get down to the ocean. You will enjoy the wild beauty and the untouched nature of this piece of rural Maui, which is occasionally visited by dolphins and turtles, and in the wintertime, the whales can be spotted breaching from the rooms. But be sure to prepare with a good pair of hiking shoes, some snacks and feel your feet, the trail can be very slippery after a heavy rain.
Location : We are on the North Shore of Maui's sunrise, just 40 minutes north/east of Kahului airport, and 30 minutes from Paia Town (on the way from the airport), which has lots of great restaurants and boutiques, a large health-food grocery store, internet cafés, bank, ATMs, post office, and lovely public sand beaches for walks or jogs, lounging, picnicking, sun bathing, swimming and surfing. We are in the heart of the island, where you will receive a full of experience of local living and no large hotels and tourism. Nature calls!
Please let us know if there are specific activities or services that you are interested in, and we’ll be happy to get you connected!
If you would like to get married on Maui, Kutira is a licensed wedding officiate by the State of Hawaii.
All of our houses are built to code and we have an official permit by the county of Maui to host guests.
Children: The allowance of children is decided on a case-by-case basis (based on age, space, and location of your vacation rental). You need to have a confirmed approval from our office. If you arrive with a child that is not on your booking our policy, and for the privacy of our other guests, we will not be able to host your stay. Your reservation will be immediately cancelled with the above policy. Generally, we strive to maintain a meditative space and if we are able to do so while hosting your wonderful family, we would love to!
**UPON ARRIVAL**: We will charge you and additional 13.42% tax from the amount you have already paid to AirB&B. (This is the mandatory Hawaiian Transient State Tax of 9.25% and Hawaii State Tax of 4.166%) Our cleaning fee is based on a 5 night stay. If we accept a shorter stay a higher cleaning fee is due as well. We request a credit card imprint for potential damage charges. In order to use our hiking trails, we need you to sign a release waiver. We have an extra late arrival charge for guests who arrive after 7pm to midnight.
Once we have accepted your booking we will send you a detailed information email that will support your stay with us.
During the high season from December 15th to March31st we have no weekly fee. If we accept your booking during this time we will charge the difference from weekly to daily fee as AirB&B automatic booking calculator can not define the high season charges.
Enjoy exploring our meditation temple. Take a hike and learn about our sustainable land with the interactive "vita-par cue", a game that explores of our land through hiking with a compass and interactive stations.
Interaction with Guests
Join a Yoga class or our Tuesday evening Embodied Spirituality teaching. On special times we have a camp fire and drum circle. Always something to share. And of course you can always interact with our volunteers form around the world.
We are located in the Valley of the white Owl, the Pueo. We have two old Hawaiian churches. We have a really beautiful guestbook in each room that shares more about the history of this place and the valley we are located in.
The nearest bus stop is in Haiku. The bus can take you around. However a car is the easiest way to navigate and see our small island.
Other Things to Note
Our office is open Monday-Friday from 10am-2pm (Hawaii standard time). We are unable to respond to inquiries over the weekend but will get back to you first thing Monday morning!
No smoking indoors. Quiet time after 9pm. Kitchen must be cleaned after each use. We encourage our guests to conserve electricity and water.
We operate on solar energy from panels installed on our buildings, our water is pumped directly from our own well, and we live sustainably and self-sufficiently from the land through organic farming. We have a short welcome procedure that will inform you how to embrace a sustainable lifestyle including what your chicken’s like and what is recyclable etc..
We had an amazing few days (not long enough). We will not forget our sunrise in the music temple, our daring adventure down the path to the ocean, and our own private waterfall. It was such an amazing time to unwind, slow down, and commune with nature with each-other and with ourselves.
The grounds are really gorgeous. Wonderful ocean views, a cool waterfall hike, amazing sunrise into the room. Cool art and decorations in the room and on the grounds. The bed was really comfortable. Being asked more more money for taxes on arrival is awkward. I booked the room on AirBnb at a certain price, I was charged a total amount, why weren't the taxes included in that? I don't want to argue and stress about money on my vacation when I am trying to relax and have fun. It's also not fair to other AirBnb listings to report an inaccurate final cost.
Sorry, if the collection of the Hawaii State Tax has brought some stress we hope the waterfall experience washed away this stress and only the magical experiences will grace your memory.
Just to clarify some information: Before you booked with us we hope you were able to read in our profile the following information: "All of our houses are built to code and we have an official permit by the county of Maui to host guests.
Upon arrival: We will charge you and additional 13.42% tax from the amount you have already paid to AirB&B. (This is the mandatory Hawaiian Transient State Tax of 9.25% and Hawaii State Tax of 4.166%) Our cleaning fee is based on a 5 night stay. If we accept a shorter stay a higher cleaning fee is due as well. "
Yes, we are a legal B&B where most of the other AirBnB are not. They do not pay taxes, and they did not had to go through a permit process. However, they are also much more vulnerable to be shut down, as it is against the law to rent with out permit. At least booking with us ensured that you have a place after arrival on our island where some other guests where in for a big surprise and had a very stress full holiday to find other accommodations. The illegal accommodations on Maui also take a way affordable housing, it is not fair to those who are legal. After we accept your booking we do send a special welcome letter with the directions. In this email the tax is again mentioned to be collected upon arrival. AirbBnB does not want to charge/collect the legal taxes for us. Cory, you are very welcome and try if AirBnB want's to change their rules and collect the tax money for us. We certainly would love that too and we have the check in easy. Warm aloha and I hope we will be welcoming you again back to our place.
Not really much at all.
We are located closer to the region of Haiku and Paia. Even though the road to Hana is only about 25 miles away, the road has many curves and small one-way bridges. it takes about 2 hours drive and certainly a wonderful drive to explore. Regarding the suggestion of having a microwave. I have written a book 'The Lightness of Body and Being' eating healthy, GMO free ans as much as possible organic and less processed food as possible. I am a passionate advocate of a healthy and sustainable way of living. We suggest to heat up food with our oven or on the stove, rather then a microwave. I hope that you enjoyed all the other appliances, from coffee maker to toaster and blender. Thank you for letting me clarify on your suggestion and why we do not have a microwave.
Raphael checked us in to the Eco Retreat and provided us with a copy of their hand drawn map of the grounds and described where the various hikes and temples were. He also gave us some suggestions on local markets, shops, dining and beaches to visit. The grounds were large, peaceful and remote – pretty far off the beaten path and the main road – but close enough to the neighboring Paia and Haiku that we had plenty of local dining options. The kitchen was very nice, clean and new, but the private deck outside our room didn't have any furniture on it which would have made it easier to enjoy. The large closet in our room was filled with linens and towels and had signs informing us that it was for staff use only, and because the room wasn't very large we didn't have a ton of space for our luggage and clothes like the listing implies. Also the bedding was different from pictured and the bed was very firm.
We enjoyed having Cassandra and her partner at our Maui Eco Retreat. To have peace of mind I would like to respond to some of Cassandra's observations and requests.
Each room at our place has a theme and Cassandra stayed in the Hawaiian room. We always take great pride to coordinate the linens with the room theme, and of course do not update our website pictures each time we change bed linens.
We do have in each room a place for hanging clothes and shelves for storing goods. Each room has a different price according to space and location. Our Hawaiian Room is one of the smaller, less expensive rooms and therefore has less storage space. If you are looking for a more spacious room the Lotus Room would be a nice choice. The upstairs lanai outside the Hawaiian Room is not made to have furniture as the wind is too strong and would lift it off the deck.
We hope that this additional information gives Cassandra and other future guests more clarity, and we hope that Cassandra knows she is always welcomed back. Thank you for your feedback.
This place is absolutely magical! I have never been so in awe of raw natural beauty in my life. We ended our vacation here and we couldn't have asked for a better end to our trip. My advice to you if you stay here is to really explore the land. You read so many things online of places you NEED to see, but this place is unlike any of that! For us we felt like we had a vacation unlike most who visit maui, we saw many of the same things you would on touristy hikes, but it was private. Felt much more special :)
The hike to the 150ft waterfall is adventurous, fun, and breathtakingly beautiful. When you get there it's like the perfect reward for your hard work! Very romantic and private, I felt like I experienced the real Maui while here.
My stay here, although short, gave me a new appreciation for simply taking the time to appreciate the moment. The energy here is amazing! I felt energized, rejuvenated, and so at peace leaving this place.
WOW! What a treat. Very serene place that allows you to truly escape. We woke one morning to stroll the property and got caught in a lite rain. We took a muddy path down to a private lagoon and peered over a 150ft waterfall - not everyday you get to start your day out with such an adventure!!!
However, if consistent hot water and electricity are a "must" for you then this is not the place. Solar power is limited and bathrooms are shared. Not the kind of place where bed linens are the most important thing and the place gets pretty quiet after sunset. We got the chance to stay here a few nights and really enjoyed our time. If you are doing the road to Hana consider a stay here along your way. It really is a place of Zen.
The Maui Eco Retreat was a truly unique, peaceful, inspiring, and wonderful place to have stayed, albeit if only for our brief, three-day trip. The property is stunning; a beautiful, eco-friendly home with amazing artifacts from all over the world, sitting on lush, undisturbed greenery. The view of the ocean is incredible, and upon arrival, our hosts graciously provided us with a map of their land and their full support to explore it (with the foresight to tread carefully).
We stayed in the Hawaiian room – sunny, clean, and comfortable – and were woken up by an assembly of birds the first morning and rainfall the next. The other guests at the Retreat were very friendly and pleasant, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their individual experiences.
Situated off of the celebrated Hana Hightway, the Maui Eco Retreat was a perfect destination for our first trip to Maui. On our way to and from the Retreat, we could easily stop by the nearby town, Paia, for any necessities. Within 20 minutes or so of leaving the Retreat, we had our choice of restaurants and grocery stores.
If it’s your first trip to the Maui Eco Retreat, we strongly advise you to arrive before the sun sets, as driving to the Retreat in darkness can be quite intimidating – especially if you’re not completely familiar with the directions. Otherwise, it’s a perfect destination to completely unwind and relax, absorb all of the beauty of Maui, while being gentle and respectful to our planet.
Though we’re now back in the grind of New York City, and many thousands of miles away from the beautiful island, we take solace in knowing that such a haven exists and we can come back to visit someday.
Dear Amit you are so kind and we deeply appreciate your wise and loving review. Thank you very much. You have summed it up in a wonderful way and we hope to welcome you back again and many other kind guest in the near future as well. Yes, we have created this piece of land to give visitors like you a place to rejuvenate and relax so you can bring it all back in your heart to the place you call home. With peace and love.
