I had a great time at Nomadas! Gabriel and Magdalena and their boys are a very warm and welcoming family. The hostel is set up in a very friendly atmosphere which allows you to meet other travelers and enjoy your time in lively conversation and maybe even share a communal meal together. The hosts are very helpful with arranging taxis or other needs for your travels. I will be returning there on my way back from the coast. It's a great option for the budget traveler. So glad I found Nomadas!
Excelente estancia. Gracias
Nice hostel, lovely family and great location!
Gabriel and Magdalena are very welcoming and helpful - for me the friendliest hostel I stayed at in Costa Rica. Hostel is in a great location and was the perfect place for me to begin and end my trip. Thanks!
I stayed at Nomadas one night after arriving in San Jose. It was a great place to stay, as soon as I arrived Magdalena explained everything I needed to know about the hostel as well as the area. All of the rooms were very clean and the backyard was very cute. The location isn't central but it's very close to Sabana park and Museo del Arte Costarricense (which is always free). The neighborhood is quiet and I got a good night's sleep.
The next day Gabriel offered to take the city bus with me to one of the bus stations (he had an appointment in the same area) . Some others from the hostel ended up needing to go to the same place so instead he called a taxi for all of us and took care of everything. He was incredibly helpful.
I'd really recommend staying here!
Clean, quiet & simple. Gabriel is a great host and very helpful. It is located outside of downtown and has a well stocked supermarket just a block away. The bus to downtown San Jose is only 300 Colones/60 US Cents and only takes a few minutes. Would definitely stay there again.
Close to the airport in a quiet neighborhood within short walking distance to the national stadium, running trails, stores & restaurants, you'd be hard pressed to find a better price and location. Gabriel and Magdalena's place is clean, has a warm atmosphere, quiet, and perfect location for your first or last nights in Costa Rica. As hosts they are extremely warm and helpful seeing that you're taken care of.
I will stay here, without hesitation, for any future San Jose departures/arrivals.
My boyfriend and I booked 3 nights at Nomadas at the beginning of our trip to Costa Rica, and 2 nights at the end.
Nomadas and its owners, Columbian expats Gabriel and Magdalena, embody the spirit of Airbnb. They are a couple of sweethearts who provide a safe and comfortable home-away-from-home for their guests. The hostel is actually the family's home, comprising the family's private area, one 10-bed dorm, one 6-bed dorm, one 3-bed private room (note: this one is one bunk bed and one twin bed, i.e., no double bed), and possibly another private room (?), as well as a kitchen used by both the family and guests, a lounge area with cable tv, wifi throughout the house, washrooms in the house, and a great washroom and shower facility in the back yard.
The washroom and showers are clean and well-kept, although there is no hot water. The water available isn't the freezing cold water you might have coming from your "cold" taps at home; it's a mild, refreshing cool, which backpackers traveling through Central and South America will need to come to terms with at some point in their journeys.
There are small lockers--about the size of a daypack--available for use, but no larger lockers. The hostel is generally quite safe, though. The lockers do not fit typical combination locks--the metal U is too thick--but small keyed locks work fine.
The weather in San José is considerably cooler than it is on the coast, so travelers may wish to bring some warm pjs for nights at any hostel in San José. Gabriel is happy to provide extra blankets upon request.
Breakfast is provided, but there is also a little grocery store about 2 blocks away, and it carries fruits, breads, juices, milk, and pastries, among other things. It also houses an ATM.
We stayed in the 10-bed dorm our first three nights, and in the private room our last two. Both are adequate. If you're trying to stretch your budget, even if you're traveling with a partner, go for the bunks - just remember to bring some earplugs. I always travel with a few sleeping pills for nights I share a dorm with snorers, and I'm glad I had them our first few nights.
Many tour companies know where Nomadas is and are happy to pick guests up right in front of the hostel; for those that don't, travelers can grab a taxi to anywhere in San José for a pretty nominal fee. The cost of a taxi to the airport is about $25 USD.
One of our favourite things about Nomadas is that it is NOT a party hostel. It's an ideal place for people like us - introverts who like to get a good night's sleep so they can spend the next day exploring. We definitely recommend Nomadas for similar travelers!
Gabriel was a great host, very accommodating when our late arrival was made later to a flight delay. They knew the area and helped us find some places to walk to in San Jose before we headed on.
The hostel was clean and colorful, had life to it, you need not look further for a place in San Jose.
