One thing that sets the Canadian Rockies apart from other mountain destinations is how little effort it takes to reach spectacular scenery. Truly stunning vistas that may require hours of hiking in other parks are right on the highway, accessible from the window of your car! Indeed, some of these drives (including the Icefields Parkway drive) are rated as some of the most scenic in the world...
Summer activities are seemingly endless: golfing, whitewater rafting, fishing, horseback riding, wildlife-watching, hiking, heli-hiking, ATV expeditions, caving, rock climbing, mountain-biking and more.
Bicycling magazine named the Canmore area as one of 'The 50 Best Trips on Our Planet.' Suffice to say, accolades and activities abound...
Drive to Columbia Glacier, the largest non-polar ice-cap in the world, hop on a snocoach and walk on the face of the glacier! Or, for a taste of the Wild West, hop on a wagon picnic excursion or saddle up a horse.
Hikers will find thousands of miles of maintained trails Try heli-hiking, and have a helicopter drop you off at the top of a remote peak, pick you up at the bottom, after you take a leisurely hike down!
And then there is golf. With 6 world-class golf courses and 135 spectacular holes nearby, Canmore is a golfer's mecca. Three courses (Stewart Creek, Silvertip and Canmore Golf & Curling Club) are within a few minutes' drive...
Winter is romantic and simply magical. Ice-skate, snowshoe, snowmobile, dog-sled, ice-fish, ski and more, in postcard-perfect surroundings!
Follow the tracks of wolves and learn the hunting patterns of owls in snowshoe excursions. Take guided ice walks through Johnston and Grotto Canyons. Experience the world of suspended waterfalls and massive blue ice pillars, frozen in time. Go on a guided ice-fishing expedition in the toasty warmth of heated huts!
Enjoy sleigh rides, or let a team of huskies whisk you through breathtaking scenery on dogsleds. Snowmobile through the back roads and wilderness areas. Or soar over the stunning landscapes of the Continental Divide in a helicopter!
Then there's world class skiing and snowboarding on dry champagne powder. Banff/Lake Louise was recently voted 'Best Ski Resort of the World' by the London Daily Telegraph! Five downhill ski areas are within easy reach of Birch Haven, with Norquay, Sunshine and Nakiska within a 15-30 minute drive.
Other Things to Note
WHEN COMPARISON SHOPPING, BE SURE TO CONSIDER THIS: Birch Haven is LEGALLY ZONED for short-term tourist rentals. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the vast majority of properties in Canmore. Don't risk losing your payments or disrupting your vacation due to crackdowns on illegally-operated properties.
Sorry, due to allergy concerns, smoking and pets are not allowed. For sanitation reasons, we also ask for guests to kindly remove the trash and load the dishwasher before they check out. We, and future guests, thank you for helping us to maintain a clean, healthy environment for all!
My husband and I had three nights in this lovely apartment and very much enjoyed the amazing mountain setting, the friendly town and the comfortable and quiet base. The furnishings are very interesting and come with their own history! And the little extras provided make settling in very easy. The roof top hot tub is a real bonus.
Communication with S May was effective and we would recommend a stay here to anyone.
Nice place, clean, close to town with an amazing view of the mountains from the hot tub on the roof!
One of the bathrooms is actually open and above the living room (not separated with a wall) and directly across from the bed so that all in the kitchen, living room, and dining room can hear you do your business. Fortunately there is another bathroom that is normal.
One thing that we found inappropriate is that, despite a $75 cleaning fee, they will charge you $50 PER bag of garbage that you don't take out yourself. They also threaten to keep some of your security deposit if you don't load the dishwasher with all your dirty dishes upon exit. You do NOT know of this when you book the place, you only find out upon confirmation of booking that you are responsible for doing some of the cleaning despite the cleaning fee you've paid. We were so worried we were sure to follow the numerous rules upon checkout so that we wouldn't lose our $500 security deposit.
The location is great, close to town and grocery shopping areas. And the hot tub on the roof (with view of the mountains) is an absolutely exceptional feature! The host is a very good and prompt communicator and, upon request, even let us have a late checkout.
Our experience was extremely smooth. We were sent all the information that we needed for check in and check out. The place was lovely with an awesome view of the mountains, and it was extremely convenient having a Supermarket just across the road. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Our host provided all information needed a few days before our trip. Checking in was a breeze.
The kitchen was well equipped and the condo is right beside two grocery stores. We got a kick out of all the custom made furniture.
We didn't realize that the bathroom in the loft has no walls or doors, it was a little bit awkward as we were 5 friends sharing the space, we pretty much stuck to using just the downstairs bathroom. Looking back on the listing though it does clearly state the loft is open to the rest of the condo.
The big beautiful windows offered great views as this unit is on the top floor. We didn't need the park pass as we were somewhat locals and had our own but that is a very thoughtful touch.
Overall a very pleasant stay and would definitely book this unit again to stay in the Canmore/Banff area.
We stayed for 5 nights during mid September and we loved our time at this apartment, it was the perfect base for us to see all that the region offer.
While the place is suited for 2 couples, we loved the extra space for just the 2 of us. It came fully equipped and we couldnt ask for more...The images dont do it justice!
Be aware though that the upstairs toilet is open... So for those moments of privacy, it could be a bit challenging if more than 1 couple stays!
Also navigating the use of the TV/dvd setup can be a bit frustrating....we found some useful tips in the guest book, but still was a challenge. I know tv is the last thing you need on holidays, but for those quite times its nice.
The owners have also paid a lot of attention to making sure guests can navigate around the kitchen (which itself is extremely well equipped) with little notices on cupboards etc.
The place is also very well looked after, something the hosts obvioulsy pride themselves on! Also, they have gone to a lot of effort to ensure guests have as much info about Canmore and surrounds... Certainly made a huge difference for us when deciding what to see and do...thank you, nice touch.
We've stayed in many airbnb apartments and each one brings its own unique qualities.. This place is no different i.e. The furniture is quite eclectic (birch tables and chairs) were funky if not sometimes challenging to negotiate around...again if there are more than 4 people you may have to fight for the perfect spot at the table.
Also this was the first apartment we stayed at where we did not get to either meet the host or speak with them... Personally its always nice to meet the people who have shared their place with us, but not to be this time. Having said that the communication via email was prompt!
All up we loved this place and highly recommend it for up to 4 guests (just be prepared to time your toilet breaks if you want privacy).
If ever we head back to Canada for vacation ( and i hope we do), then we would definately want to stay at birch haven again. Very nice place, great location and has everything you would need for an extended stay and more (it has a nice 'home' feel to it).
Nice apartment, great view, perfect location. The condo was clean and the host was very friendly. We had a great time at Birch Haven.
Travel is somewhat of an obsession with us, and having traveled extensively in over 50 countries, we can quite safely say that the Canadian Rockies (and especially Banff National Park) still holds up as one of our favorite spots in the world.
We fell head over heels in love with this awe-inspiring location during a vacation here and had hardly scratched the surface of available activities in those 2 weeks. When we realized that it would take a lifetime to enjoy the gifts of the area, we quickly decided that we wanted to own a slice of heaven... to have a special place to rejuvenate our minds, reassess our priorities and recalibrate our lives.
Hence, the genesis of Birch Haven, a place we are now proud to share with you!
