This listing features our beautiful Indian room with views of both the Haleakala volcano (House of the Sun) and the ocean. The Indian room, located on the first floor of the Opua house, has a warm feeling and invites you to travel inside as much as you enjoy the outside. The room is tastefully decorated with offerings from India and Tibet. Since we made those pictures we installed a zen-like looking black bamboo flooring. The Indian room has shared bath room on the same floor and the shower is located on the bottom of the stairs. A spacious closet with top to bottom mirror holds your luggage so you can keep the room meditative.
You are sharing a spacious, beautiful kitchen with the other guests in the house. The Opua house kitchen is well equipped for all of your cooking needs.

*ONLY FITS 2 PEOPLE thank you

*Please note that our offices are closed during the weekend and our normal business hours are M-F 10am-2pm Hawaiian Standard Time. We are a small family owned retreat and will always respond to your request as soon as we are able. We greatly appreciate your understanding. Mahalo.

All of our buildings are ecologically built and are adorned with hand-crafted works of art from Pacific and Asian countries. All our rooms have ocean views, and we are surrounded by lush jungle, ponds, flower gardens, fruit trees, and a nearby waterfall (reached by a short downhill climb) which flows into natural pools for swimming from which you can gaze upon the breath-taking view of the valley.
Our land (email hidden) to wander and explore: you can take a short walk passing the chickens, the homes of our bees, countless species of flowers and plants and stop by our temples, where you can rest, relax and meditate. For the adventurer, our ocean trail is a moderately challenging cliff trail and the hike takes about a half an hour to get down to the ocean. You will enjoy the wild beauty and the untouched nature of this piece of rural Maui, which is occasionally visited by dolphins and turtles, and in the wintertime, the whales can be spotted breaching from the rooms. But be sure to prepare with a good pair of hiking shoes, some snacks and feel your feet, the trail can be very slippery after a heavy rain.
Location : We are on the North Shore of Maui's sunrise, just 40 minutes north/east of Kahului airport, and 30 minutes from Paia Town (on the way from the airport), which has lots of great restaurants and boutiques, a large health-food grocery store, internet cafés, bank, ATMs, post office, and lovely public sand beaches for walks or jogs, lounging, picnicking, sun bathing, swimming and surfing. We are in the heart of the island, where you will receive a full of experience of local living and no large hotels and tourism. Nature calls!
Please let us know if there are specific activities or services that you are interested in, and we’ll be happy to get you connected!
If you would like to get married on Maui, Kutira is a licensed wedding officiate by the State of Hawaii.

All of our houses are built to code and we have an official permit by the county of Maui to host guests.

Upon arrival: We will charge you and additional 13.42% tax from the amount you have already paid to AirB&B (This is the mandatory Hawaiian Transient State Tax of 9.25% and Hawaii State Tax of 4.166%). Our cleaning fee is based on a 5 night stay. If we accept a shorter stay a higher cleaning fee is due as well. We request a credit card imprint for potential damage charges. In order to use our hiking trails, we need you to sign a release waiver. We have an extra late arrival charge for guests who arrive after 7pm to midnight.
Once we have accepted your booking we will send you a detailed information email that will support your stay with us.
During the high season from December 15th to January 31st we have no weekly fee. If we accept your booking during this time we will charge the difference from weekly to daily fee as AirB&B automatic booking calculator can not define the high season charges.

  • This place is absolutely magical! I have never been so in awe of raw natural beauty in my life. We ended our vacation here and we couldn't have asked for a better end to our trip. My advice to you if you stay here is to really explore the land. You read so many things online of places you NEED to see, but this place is unlike any of that! For us we felt like we had a vacation unlike most who visit maui, we saw many of the same things you would on touristy hikes, but it was private. Felt much more special :)

The hike to the 150ft waterfall is adventurous, fun, and breathtakingly beautiful. When you get there it's like the perfect reward for your hard work! Very romantic and private, I felt like I experienced the real Maui while here.

My stay here, although short, gave me a new appreciation for simply taking the time to appreciate the moment. The energy here is amazing! I felt energized, rejuvenated, and so at peace leaving this place.

  • We still have lovely images in our minds of this idyllic retreat -- the large windows overlooking the pond and the ocean beyond. Our room and the quiet, privacy and exquisite surroundings perfectly suited our tastes and were incomparably better than any hotel we could have found. The focus on a self-contained, earth-friendly lifestyle also correspond with our own values and made us feel very much at home. We were married during our stay and our walks down to the ocean and swimming under the waterfall will be among our favorite memories.

  • WOW! What a treat. Very serene place that allows you to truly escape. We woke one morning to stroll the property and got caught in a lite rain. We took a muddy path down to a private lagoon and peered over a 150ft waterfall - not everyday you get to start your day out with such an adventure!!!
However, if consistent hot water and electricity are a "must" for you then this is not the place. Solar power is limited and bathrooms are shared. Not the kind of place where bed linens are the most important thing and the place gets pretty quiet after sunset. We got the chance to stay here a few nights and really enjoyed our time. If you are doing the road to Hana consider a stay here along your way. It really is a place of Zen.

  • What I really liked:
    - they call it: the "land". The huge garden around this eco retreat was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. You enter it and you instantly feel peaceful and "at home". You've to experience it by yourself,

    - the people: We've met a couple of very very nice people there, joined some breakfasts together, met them in the evenings and chatted ...

    - the ecological set-up: the water comes from an own source, the power comes from solar cells, you'll find some fruits on the trees around, etc.

    What I didn't like:
    - how we were (not) welcomed. We arrived from our flight in the afternoon and no one was there. Although we were told to call prior our arrival, which we did even if it costs plenty. After 30min of waiting an assistant arrived, telling us we would have to return later to check in. The room wasn't ready yet, we even couldn't put the bags into the room. Well, you probably just shouldn't expect the same support as in a B&B

    - the furniture: is partly old and some upholstery smelled from year-long usage

    - the bed: the bed in the lotus room should instantly be replaced. nothing more to add.

    - yoga: there were no yoga classed offered directly at the retreat, you would have to the car and arrange a class beforehands.

  • The location is really wonderful. In the middle of wonderful nature and with breathtaking ocean views.
We enjoyed our week in the retreat very much!

  • The Maui Eco Retreat was a truly unique, peaceful, inspiring, and wonderful place to have stayed, albeit if only for our brief, three-day trip. The property is stunning; a beautiful, eco-friendly home with amazing artifacts from all over the world, sitting on lush, undisturbed greenery. The view of the ocean is incredible, and upon arrival, our hosts graciously provided us with a map of their land and their full support to explore it (with the foresight to tread carefully).

We stayed in the Hawaiian room – sunny, clean, and comfortable – and were woken up by an assembly of birds the first morning and rainfall the next. The other guests at the Retreat were very friendly and pleasant, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their individual experiences.

Situated off of the celebrated Hana Hightway, the Maui Eco Retreat was a perfect destination for our first trip to Maui. On our way to and from the Retreat, we could easily stop by the nearby town, Paia, for any necessities. Within 20 minutes or so of leaving the Retreat, we had our choice of restaurants and grocery stores.

If it’s your first trip to the Maui Eco Retreat, we strongly advise you to arrive before the sun sets, as driving to the Retreat in darkness can be quite intimidating – especially if you’re not completely familiar with the directions. Otherwise, it’s a perfect destination to completely unwind and relax, absorb all of the beauty of Maui, while being gentle and respectful to our planet.

Though we’re now back in the grind of New York City, and many thousands of miles away from the beautiful island, we take solace in knowing that such a haven exists and we can come back to visit someday.
