This listing features our beautiful Indian room with views of both the Haleakala volcano (House of the Sun) and the ocean. The Indian room, located on the first floor of the Opua house, has a warm feeling and invites you to travel inside as much as you enjoy the outside. The room is tastefully decorated with offerings from India and Tibet. Since we made those pictures we installed a zen-like looking black bamboo flooring. The Indian room has shared bath room on the same floor and the shower is located on the bottom of the stairs. A spacious closet with top to bottom mirror holds your luggage so you can keep the room meditative.
You are sharing a spacious, beautiful kitchen with the other guests in the house. The Opua house kitchen is well equipped for all of your cooking needs.

ABOUT OUR PROPERTY:
All of our buildings are ecologically built and are often adorned with spiritual art and hand-crafted masterpieces from Pacific and Asian countries. All our rooms have ocean views, and we are surrounded by lush jungle, ponds, flower gardens, fruit trees, and a nearby waterfall (reached by a short downhill climb) which flows into natural pools for swimming from which you can gaze upon the breath-taking view of the valley.
Our land is a wonderful place to wander and explore: you can take a short walk passing the chickens, the homes of our bees, countless species of flowers and plants and stop by our temples, where you can rest, relax and meditate. For the adventurer, our ocean trail is a moderately challenging cliff trail and the hike takes about a half an hour to get down to the ocean. You will enjoy the wild beauty and the untouched nature of this piece of rural Maui, which is occasionally visited by dolphins and turtles, and in the wintertime, the whales can be spotted breaching from the rooms. But be sure to prepare with a good pair of hiking shoes, some snacks and feel your feet, the trail can be very slippery after a heavy rain.
Location: We are on the North Shore of Maui's sunrise, just 40 minutes north/east of Kahului airport, and 30 minutes from Paia Town (on the way from the airport), which has lots of great restaurants and boutiques, a large health-food grocery store, internet cafés, bank, ATMs, post office, and lovely public sand beaches for walks or jogs, lounging, picnicking, sun bathing, swimming and surfing. We are in the heart of the island, where you will receive a full of experience of local living and no large hotels and tourism. Nature calls!
Please let us know if there are specific activities or services that you are interested in, and we’ll be happy to get you connected!
If you would like to get married on Maui, Kutira is a licensed wedding officiant by the State of Hawaii.
All of our houses are built to code and we have an official permit by the county of Maui to host guests.
Children: The allowance of children is decided on a case-by-case basis (based on age, space, and location of your vacation rental). You need to have a confirmed approval from our office. If you arrive with a child without our consent, we will not be able to host your stay. Your reservation will be immediately cancelled with no money returned. Generally, we strive to maintain a meditative space and if we are able to do so while hosting your wonderful family, we would love to!
**UPON ARRIVAL**: We will charge you and additional 13.42% tax from the amount you have already paid to AirB&B. (This is the mandatory Hawaiian Transient State Tax of 9.25% and Hawaii State Tax of 4.166%). Our cleaning fee is based on a 5 night stay. If we accept a shorter stay a higher cleaning fee is due as well. Our cleaning fee is likely different during the high-season (December 15th - March 31st) and the summer season (July 1st - August 31st).
Late Arrival: There is an additional $45 charge for late arrivals between 7pm - 10pm and $65 from 10pm to midnight. We are a small family owned business and have to hire an after hour guest-services person to welcome late night arrivals and show you to your room or cottage. If you have planned to arrive before 6pm, and you come later than one hour after you agreed, we have the right to charge a waiting fee of $30. We request a courtesy call if you arrival time has changed, and in this case we will waive your waiting fee until 7pm. Again, thank you for understanding our situation.
Shopping Service For Late Arrivals: Please contact us in advance with a detailed shopping list and we will have your groceries waiting for you when you arrive. The cost for this service is $30 + 10% of the cost of goods.
We also request upon arrival a credit card imprint for potential overuse charges. In order to use our hiking trails, we need you to sign a release waiver.
Once we have accepted your booking we will send you a detailed informational email that will support your stay with us. Important: Please confirm this email as it will contain driving directions to the property and you will need to verify your arrival time.
We are really looking forward to hosting you at our magical place!
Other Things to Note
Our office is open Monday-Friday from 10am-2pm (Hawaii standard time). We are unable to respond to inquiries over the weekend but will get back to you first thing Monday morning!
No smoking indoors. Quiet time after 9pm. Kitchen must be cleaned after each use. We encourage our guests to conserve electricity and water.
We operate on solar energy from panels installed on our buildings, our water is pumped directly from our own well, and we live sustainably and self-sufficiently from the land through organic farming. We have a short welcome procedure that will inform you how to embrace a sustainable lifestyle including what your chicken’s like and what is recyclable etc..
Fantastic place. Warm and welcoming. Ideally located. Easy to get to all the important sites. Loved our own personal water falls and access to the beach which was spectacular. Lovely rooms and beautiful grounds. If you want peace and serenity, this is the place for you!
We really enjoyed staying at the Maui Eco Retreat while in Maui. It's a bit of a remote location - about 25 minutes outside Paia/20 minutes from Haiku (the nearest small town), and at the end of a bumpy dirt road, but it was true Hawaii and not a resort. The grounds and rooms are beautiful. We did a hike on the property down to a huge waterfall then down a steep trail (completely with ropes) to the stunning beach - highly recommended. They have some extra fees for different things, but generally found them to be accommodating and fair.
The Eco Retreat is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the pristine nature that surrounds you. The place "where old spirits go to rest" is magical and isolated. It is a trip I will never forget. The only complaint was the money due at arrival. We had a flight that didn't land until about 10 pm, so we didn't get to enjoy the room for our afternoon/evening. Despite this, we had to pay an extra $65 for our "late arrival" because someone would have to be there to let us in. When we arrived, it was Raphael who let us in (the owner). Also, Hawaii taxes were due, adding another $150 to the bill. We agreed to pay a $30 surcharge for a few groceries, which added another $60 net to the bill. This increased the cost of our stay by about 50%. Be prepared to pay more than the listing price. Arrive early enough to enjoy each day you pay for. Make sure you turn right at the bamboo gazebo. Enjoy!
Thank you for your review CB and giving me the opportunity to share some information regarding your requests. We are a permitted BnB we have to charge the Hawaii Transient State Taxes of 13.42%. We have this clearly mentioned in our description. Unfortunately the AirBnB is not able to charge the taxes through their system and therefore we have to collect this amount upon arrival. Sorry for this inconvenience, but we have no other choice and that also insures you, that once you have booked with us through AirBnB, that your stay is secured. We will not be subject to be shut down by the County. People with no permit are considered illegal and can be shut down.
Regarding the shopping: this is an additional service we offer only for the very late check in's. Our local grocery shop in Paia, on the way from the airport to our land, is closed by 8.30pm. Of course there is always the option to shop at Safeway that is open 24 hours near the airport, but mostly when people have a very late arrival they just want to come out to the land. The $30 dollar shopping fee covers barley the cost of this service. Driving time is over one hour plus shopping time and gas. We are not making any extra money on this service our intention is to provide for our guests a relaxing morning, so they don't have to drive again to town to do shopping and start to enjoy the land and the hikes.
Late Arrival fee: Most of the flights do arrive around noon, but recently some of the air lines come in late and that means we have to wait sometimes till almost midnight. (Waiting for luggage, getting the rental car etc can often delay an arrival at 10pm at the airport already close to 11pm). We have to charge for late arrivals as we do have to hire people to do this job. Yes, this is a night time job. If Raphael or I have to do stay up as the owners, then we could not find another person and yes, this is an extra job for us as well. As owners we have many hats to wear. We are a bit larger then most of the other Airbnb places. In order to run an off the grid, sustainable place we have to take care of many things during the day. We start early in the morning, so late check in's are additional work for us and everybody appreciates to be paid for this service. Luckily 85% of the people arrive between 3pm and 7pm. This information is mentioned in our description as well. We have no intention to charge anything else then what is clearly explained in our description and available before you book. I am sorry that this information may have slipped your attention. We appreciate clarity and we are hosting guests since over 15 years. We also have this information on our website.
We are happy that you liked our land and had an enjoyable time with us. Thank you for staying with us and we hope one day we can welcome you back to your place. Warm aloha Kutira
Beautiful place, well kept and on a stunning piece of property. The land truly feels sacred and has ancient rock circles and plunging cliffs with trails to a pool high above a waterfall. The Host Kutira is a trip and very passionate about spirituality. Some of the other guests have a bit of a cult vibe going and there is some serious hippy magic going on but it's easy to avoid if you are not into that. Various temples dot the land make for interesting places to explore. Bring your hiking boots. Some of the "house rules" can be a bit uptight but the hosts seem to doing a good job conserving the environment and minimizing the impact and carbon foot print of their guests. There is a kitchen to use but bring your own food because there are no markets nearby and each shelf in the fridge is labelled to prohibit sharing. Overall a magic experience with minimal environmental guilt at a decent price.
Truly the essence of Maui. Love the decorations and all. Really open and nice kitchen. Clean and comfy room. Unforgettable experience with the outdoor bathroom. We spend many time just wondering around the house. Tip: Always keep the map around you... There's a bit driving technics required to get to the location through unpaved road. But truly worth it!

About the Host, Alyson & Kutira
Hi, my name is Alyson and I am the office manager of our beautiful Maui Eco Retreat B& B on the North Shore of Maui. Together with the owners, Kutira and Raphael, I am taking care of your visit with us. I love that this place is truly embodying old Hawaii and the magnificent side of where eco tourism is fully alive. Come, visit us!
Great coffee shop and surf equipment
In the back is the most famous Kombuch and Raw food bar. Opposite this building is a great Japanese Sushi bar and the post office is there too.
This is only about 20 min from our place. One of the best restaurants on Maui. You must make a reservation otherwise no luck. They are full every night... pricy... but really fantastic. Great fish!
Carl Incerto is the best hairdresser in town. His color and hair cuts are "da kine". If he is not there then he is in New York or LA and does the hair of celebrities. He does my hair since 20 years.
Our Maui Dharma Center. Lama Gyaltson gives teaching and not to miss the beautiful stupa with inside painting of Goddess Tara. A nice place to visit and leave a prayer
Right opposite the post office is the newly opened Maka Mana Rawfood Restaurant. There not yet even on the google map. Stop by and get surprised what they have to offer. Deserts are supreme & healthy.
On your way to our place we invite you to stop at our local grown shop. Mana Food is the best. You will be having a shopping experience you most likely will treasure on this trip.
There crepes and coffee is very good. Take a break in their outdoor garden and enjoy the aliveness of Paia.
Insider tip... you may see Willi Nelson having his breakfast there... in the evening the bar is full and often live music. You will meet the locals there and have a good time.
There menu is good and their coffee also. Movie nights on certain evenings. Always some "funky" paintings on the wall... even for sale, if you dare.
Michelle Simmer is a good friend of mine and I love her taste of Hawaiian clothing, especially surfer and for the ladies... great yoga clothing and comfortable, nice design for traveling.
If you like fresh fish... this is the place to go. You can have a big salad with a piece of local fish... and you can split this. Portions are big or you bring the rest home.
Pizza lover? They have organic pizza and even gluten free staff on the menu. Great place to meet people.
