ABOUT OUR PROPERTY:
All of our buildings are ecologically built and are often adorned with spiritual art and hand-crafted masterpieces from Pacific and Asian countries. All our rooms have ocean views, and we are surrounded by lush jungle, ponds, flower gardens, fruit trees, and a nearby waterfall (reached by a short downhill climb) which flows into natural pools for swimming from which you can gaze upon the breath-taking view of the valley.
Our land is a wonderful place to wander and explore: you can take a short walk passing the chickens, the homes of our bees, countless species of flowers and plants and stop by our temples, where you can rest, relax and meditate. For the adventurer, our ocean trail is a moderately challenging cliff trail and the hike takes about a half an hour to get down to the ocean. You will enjoy the wild beauty and the untouched nature of this piece of rural Maui, which is occasionally visited by dolphins and turtles, and in the wintertime, the whales can be spotted breaching from the rooms. But be sure to prepare with a good pair of hiking shoes, some snacks and feel your feet, the trail can be very slippery after a heavy rain.
Location: We are on the North Shore of Maui's sunrise, just 40 minutes north/east of Kahului airport, and 30 minutes from Paia Town (on the way from the airport), which has lots of great restaurants and boutiques, a large health-food grocery store, internet cafés, bank, ATMs, post office, and lovely public sand beaches for walks or jogs, lounging, picnicking, sun bathing, swimming and surfing. We are in the heart of the island, where you will receive a full of experience of local living and no large hotels and tourism. Nature calls!
Please let us know if there are specific activities or services that you are interested in, and we’ll be happy to get you connected!
If you would like to get married on Maui, Kutira is a licensed wedding officiant by the State of Hawaii.
All of our houses are built to code and we have an official permit by the county of Maui to host guests.
Children: The allowance of children is decided on a case-by-case basis (based on age, space, and location of your vacation rental). You need to have a confirmed approval from our office. If you arrive with a child without our consent, we will not be able to host your stay. Your reservation will be immediately cancelled with no money returned. Generally, we strive to maintain a meditative space and if we are able to do so while hosting your wonderful family, we would love to!
**UPON ARRIVAL**: We will charge you and additional 13.42% tax from the amount you have already paid to AirB&B. (This is the mandatory Hawaiian Transient State Tax of 9.25% and Hawaii State Tax of 4.166%). Our cleaning fee is based on a 5 night stay. If we accept a shorter stay a higher cleaning fee is due as well. Our cleaning fee is likely different during the high-season (December 15th - March 31st) and the summer season (July 1st - August 31st).
Late Arrival: There is an additional $45 charge for late arrivals between 7pm - 10pm and $65 from 10pm to midnight. We are a small family owned business and have to hire an after hour guest-services person to welcome late night arrivals and show you to your room or cottage. If you have planned to arrive before 6pm, and you come later than one hour after you agreed, we have the right to charge a waiting fee of $30. We request a courtesy call if you arrival time has changed, and in this case we will waive your waiting fee until 7pm. Again, thank you for understanding our situation.
Shopping Service For Late Arrivals: Please contact us in advance with a detailed shopping list and we will have your groceries waiting for you when you arrive. The cost for this service is $30 + 10% of the cost of goods.
We also request upon arrival a credit card imprint for potential overuse charges. In order to use our hiking trails, we need you to sign a release waiver.
Once we have accepted your booking we will send you a detailed informational email that will support your stay with us. Important: Please confirm this email as it will contain driving directions to the property and you will need to verify your arrival time.
We are really looking forward to hosting you at our magical place!
Other Things to Note

No smoking indoors. Quiet time after 9pm. Kitchen must be cleaned after each use. We encourage our guest to conserve electricity and water.

We are family owned small place and we are not prepared to host small children. Welcome to the new Eco-Conscious way of living and traveling elegantly green!
I had a wonderful stay here while traveling for work, it was a relaxing place to kick back and let the mind go. I recommend this place for anyone that is wanting to get away from the busy towns and have the great outdoors Maui has to offer. The views from this place were amazing and that alone bring a piece of mind and the ability to relax. There was so much to do around the property I wish I could have stayed longer. Thank you so much for the peaceful stay!
Alyson and Kutira have clearly devoted their lives and fortune to creating a beautiful, peaceful, and almost hidden garden sanctuary. Their considerable efforts to live in harmony with the environment will forever separate them from their much larger corporate competitors. If you prefer sterile, air conditioned comfort over sleeping with fragrant night breezes under breathtaking starlight vistas, this resort is not for you. If 20-minute hot showers and all-you-can-eat buffets are your idea of a perfect vacation, you're not likely to appreciate this deliberately minimalist eco-resort. But, if descending a challenging rope trail to a pristine rocky coastline or swimming in a spring-fed pool perched atop a 150-foot waterfall appeals to your inner child, you may have found what you're searching for. This rare, return-to-nature experience is literally and figuratively "off the beaten path." I highly recommend you consider this lovely piece of old-Maui paradise.
The Eco Retreat is a very unique place, and we really enjoyed our stay. The Dolphin Room was exactly as pictured, and was perfect for the two of us. The grounds of the retreat are really amazing—we spent two of our four days just hiking and exploring the grounds. We loved taking the trail down to the private waterfall and natural pool (which empties via a 100+ foot waterfall!), and hiking the breathtaking trail down to the coastline. We actually hiked up the stream to the bottom of the tall waterfall, which had a beautiful, secluded pool at its base. These were absolute highlights of our trip that we'll never forget.
William, the Retreat's concierge, for lack of a better term, was extremely helpful and friendly. He introduced us to everything the grounds had to offer, checked in with us periodically, and even helped safeguard some items we left behind after our stay. We never met Kutira; but her husband, Raphael, was a ubiquitous presence on the grounds, always doing some job or another in the proud upkeep of his home, and genuinely concerned with the well-being of his guests.
The retreat's approach to green living also had a clear impact on our experience. It may sound silly, but when you're instructed to conserve water and electricity, or to save food compost for the chickens, you begin to realize how much you typically waste, and you begin to take pleasure in conservation. Even four days of living under these constraints have changed my behavior in ways that I hope will become permanent.
Other highlights: the outdoor shower, the sizable kitchen with separate and labeled shelves and fridge space for each guest, the numerous spots to sit and enjoy breakfast, the charming hand-drawn map of the grounds. Until next time!
My girlfriend and I recently stayed at the retreat and we had an amazing experience! We were upgraded for free to a larger room (the dolphin room) with a view of the ocean and the sunrise in the morning. The grounds of the retreat were really beautiful and well maintained it felt like we were isolated in beautiful gardens in the middle of the rainforest. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Maui. If you stay here make sure to visit their waterfalls and natural pools. It was the only waterfalls and swimming pools that we had to ourselves on the whole trip!!! I will try too book here again on my next trip to Maui. 5 stars all week long thanks guys for a really memorable experience!
Raphael greeted us with an overview of the property. We really enjoyed the waterfalls and swimming area nearby. We stayed in the Dolphin Room. The room itself was sweet and cozy.
The place is excellent, a beautiful house, very quite, with a very large garden. Kutira is also very nice, show us around the house, and the facility which we can use during the stay. We'd love to come back next time when we are at Maui again.
A fantastic place of spirituality and peace with a big nature around
//Very clean and comfortable rooms
//The hosts are very friendly and helpful
//Lots of privacy in the rooms outside the main house
//Functional kitchen has everything you need, can be a little crowded if there are groups around
//Super nice garden with lots of nature all around (forest, pools, sea, open air shower, yoga and meditation temple, etc.)
//Great area (Highlights: Hana Highway (take the walks to the secluded waterfalls, surfing @ Kamoa Beach, cliff walk and Red Sand Beach @ Hana Bay, Haleakala Creater Road, etc.)
Aloha Stephan, thanks for your lovely feedback. We hope you come back every year!! Around Christmas our Maui Eco Retreat is certainly the fullest booked ever. We could rent out each room and cottage about 5 times... so many people are on Maui during the Holidays. However, I deeply appreciate your remark about the voices you could hear from the living room. We will lovingly remind our guests to be aware and also that we have quiet times after certain times. Luckily we have so many wonderful out door places and temples to go. Wishing you a wonderful happy new year.
