We live in a rural area approximately 2 hours drive south from Auckland. Our home is contemporary with a definate seaside feel. We are just metres from a tidal estuary which is very safe for swimming & kayaking.( kayaks are available) There is a hot mineral swimming pool & spa in the next street, a beautiful 8km surf beach within a 6 minute drive, & a lovely little seaside village with interesting boutiques & cafes. Closer to home our walkways are beautiful, along Pohutakwa lined grass areas. Playgrounds within walking distance. Our home will provide you with a relaxed & comfortable stay in a very unique part of The Bay of Plenty.
Our added attraction is the most beautiful Karangahake Gorge. Just 20 minutes drive away. There you can cycle or walk the many trails, enjoying the river & its waterfalls and cafes along the way.
Our guests will have access to our home & be able to enjoy our waterside walks, kayaking, swimming as well as quiet time in our secluded courtyard which also has a heated spa pool.
A comprehensive guide to local activities is available in the form of brochures & our local knowledge
Interaction with Guests
We interact frequently with our guests, or to a lesser degree if we feel that is what would be appreciated.
Our neighbourhood is quiet. A lot of the houses are owned by holiday makers. Others are permanent residents who are friendly & sociable.
During summer holidays, we have a substantial rise in population.
Our closest shops are a 10minute drive away with no public transport available as we are a rural community.
When showering, put extractor fan on, open window. Ensure fan is turned off when finished.
We appreciate no smoking.
Close courtyard gates when coming & going.
On day of departure, turn back bed linen. Leave towels on the floor in your bathroom
Very welcoming and hospitable. Great cook and very reasonably priced evening meal. Their dog, Bonty, was a dear.
Thanks to both Lyn & Keith our stay with was most welcoming & relaxing. They pointed us to some amazing food & scenery! Thanks to you both
We spent 4 awesome nights and days at Keith's and Lyn's home. Their house is small but nice and from the first moment they let us feel like a part of the family. They regaled us with fantastic breakfast in the morning which we really enjoyed as well.
Keith and lyn had also good advices for us where to go for dinner. So we either went to one of the restaurants they recommend or we enjoyed the Company with them and relaxed at their house.
The rural waterside home of Lyn and Keith was a home away from home. Within 10 min drive to the Waihi beach, in a quiet neighbourhood, the house is located near an estuary and in proximity of greenery. We enjoyed not only the nice accommodation (and the preparations Lyn made to make our 3 ys old daughter feel super welcome, with separate room, cot, toys, etc) but also the amazing dinners prepared by Lyn. Both our rooms and the bathroom were very clean and they are part of the family home and equipped with everything you need. There is also a lovely terrace (with a jacuzzy spa) for those afternoons when you might want to chill with a glass of wine. Lyn and Keith also gave us great tips about places to see while there: everything from restaurants recommendations, to the nearest playground, they know it well! They are amazing hosts and they totally won over our daughter, they were both always a step ahead of our wishes and needs and we hope we are able to return one day and visit again.
We have past Athenree by many times over the years and our stopover was long overdue. The whole area is a beautiful part of the North Island. The location and hospitality offered by Lyn and Keith was first class. They are a friendly and genuine couple who made us feel very welcome. The impromptu meal on the evening we arrived was most enjoyable and appreciated.
We would love to return sometime in the future. Dawn and Ian
PS Jonty is an added bonus to the homely environment.
What a beautiful place and what a wonderful location, great very clean & spacious room and excellent and very helpful hosts. We love to back one day...
This is probably the best place we stayed in NZ. Keith and Lyn made us feel 100% comfortable in their home and spoiled us with some wine and beer. We used their kayaks to hop across the little bay to go boogie boarding on the surf beach. Both times we were there we had the section of the beach to ourselves. Lovely little restaurants around. We would definitely stay again!
We are a semi retired couple with 7 children between us & 10 grandchildren . Our children are spread out between Canada, Australia, Scotland, Waiheke Island & Auckland.
We are originally from Auckland.
The 5 things we couldn't live without are: travel, food, wine, our dog Jonty & our Grandchildren. Oh and of course, we couldn't live anywhere else but Athenree.
We have travelled more than some but not as much as many, enjoying the Pacific Islands over the past few years. Our most memorable trip was to London & Scotland to visit family a few year ago.
Our motto is to Enjoy every day. Be happy, don't let the small stuff get you down.
We love to have people to stay & have enjoyed friends and hosted visitors many times. Most memorable. A teacher from France who stayed with us for almost a year. We became her "parents" & helped her through a pregnancy & birth of her first child ..that was 16 years ago & we are still in touch with her , her husband & 3 lovey children..
