Peace and quiet

Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
The Chimneys… This cabin is not right for everyone, but it’s amazing for nature lovers, hikers, and adventure seekers looking for a truly rustic getaway. Find tranquility in this authentic 1800s remote cabin. Delight in the home’s quirky crooked floors and handmade finishes. Hike Crabtree Falls, raft nearby rivers, ride horses, birdwatch, fish, or simply relax.

The space
This house is an 1800s cabin in the middle of a wooded, remote and wild area. Please keep in mind that this area is home to plenty of wildlife including venomous snakes that live in the tall grasses. We welcome your dogs, but, for their sake, don’t allow them to investigate without considering the possibility that they may come across a copperhead or a rattle snake.

The cabin has basic updates but remains an 1800s cabin and is ideal for the nature lover and adventurous soul.
Due to the location of the cabin it's inevitable that spiders, mosquitoes, mice, and tiny ring snakes etc can enter the cabin. We have monthly pest control in order to minimize the nuisance.

The closest supermarket is 40 minutes away

It's not recommended for children as the main heating source, the wood burning stove in the kitchen, is out in the open.

We are located in an area that gets powerful thunderstorms, sometimes the lights flicker but I have experienced overnight outages.

We are located in the migratory path of many different birds. I spent two weeks at the cabin in early May and I recorded over 12 different varieties with my app in a matter of seconds. The humming birds also like to visit (food for humming birds:1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Boil water add sugar until dissolved. Allow to cool down. Rinse feeder well before adding new food. )

It's a hiker's paradise and you can easily access the AT from The Crabtree Falls hike. I hear the area is a great place to train for cross country runners. The area hosts various national competitions annually.

Nelson county offers three river options for kayaking, canoeing or tubing with different rapid categories.
Fishing is also popular in the county.

Please use the stacked wood for house heating purposes only. Feel free to gather wood from around the property for the fire pit or bring your own.

The heat: There is electric baseboard heat, but we prefer our guests minimize the use of the baseboard and instead make use of our other heating options. There is a small heater in the bathroom. There is a fireplace in the living room and a wood burning stove in the kitchen and a split in the dining room. The wood burning stove in the kitchen heats the house nicely. It's a good idea to know how to light a fire should you lose power.

The AC: there is a split in the dining room, a nice sized fan , and window units in the bedrooms.

Guest access
You will need to WRITE down the code for the lockbox as you will have no wifi on the mountain. We have removed the wifi password but the signal outside is very weak.
You have access to everything except for two spaces in the kitchen, which have padlocks on them. Please do not enter the barns ( safety reasons).

Other things to note
You should jot down the access info as you will lose reception when you reach the top of the mountain. You will be at 3000 feet elevation within an area that is a natural habitat to local wildlife. There is a an unoccupied camper on the property. Please do not enter.
In the colder months, it is important to know how to light a fire.

Neighborhood highlights

When we bought the property our neighbor said, "Welcome to The Mountain, here, neighbors become friends and friends become family". Our dirt road is a combination of families who have lived here for generations and those of us who have moved here because it's paradise. It's the perfect combination of seclusion without being isolated. While you are surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you can easily access the quaint and historic towns of Lexington and Staunton (pronounced Stanton). Drop down the other side of the mountain for a ski area, wineries, breweries and cider makers or just stay home and listen to nature. You are surrounded by woods and nature. Sometimes nature lets itself in. While we do everything to minimize access to critters sometimes they outsmart us and let themselves in.
There is a small store with basics 1.5 miles away. The next closest supermarket is 40 minutes away.

I am a fun-loving, travel- enthusiast and a horse and music photographer. I have a degree in journalism, but I currently work in real estate. . When I am not out helping people with their real estate needs, I like to ride my dressage horse. I love new adventures and I am always excited to see new places. My husband plays and tours with The Chris O'Leary Band, a blues band. I like to go on the road with them when time allows.
