This charming cottage style two bedroom, one bath home is one-half of the ohana (or second family home) on my private two acre property. It is located on a quiet, secluded street a short ten minute drive south of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
The cottage includes a large covered wrap-around lanai, and 800 square feet of interior space: a kitchen, dining and living area, a large bathroom with tiled shower, one bedroom with a queen sized bed, and the other bedroom with a full sized bed.
We are conveniently located for exploring all of East Hawaii, from the Ahalanui Hot Ponds and Kapoho Tide Pools in southern Puna, to Volcano National Park, and (of course) Hilo and the Hamakua coast regions. We are also happy to share snorkeling equipment, ice chests, and a variety of picnic gear with our guests.
We always have our own fresh farm-raised eggs to share with our guests, as well as seasonal fruits and vegetables; and are also very convenient to many of the local farmer's markets for year round fresh tropical produce. A nice selection of restaurants can be found in nearby in Kea'au and Pahoa villages, and are even more abundant in Hilo town.
We have a peaceful, secluded spot here and want to make sure it stays this way. So please be courteous and aware of others staying on the property.
Keeping the Cottage mildew and bug-free is also very important, so please follow my written instructions on how to handle various types of rubbage and recycling.
Please use the clothesline on the lanai to dry towels, etc if the weather permits, and open the bathroom windows when taking a shower. Electricity is very expensive here, so we try to conserve as much as possible by unplugging appliances when not in use and only using lights when needed.
We really enjoyed our three day stay in Darya's cottage. My husband our two teenagers found the beds to be comfortable and the cottage was very clean. It is located at the end of a quiet road, central to the Hilo side of the island, perfect for the end of the day relaxation. Darya was very welcoming and informative about the area. She had several things in the fridge (fresh eggs & waffles) and some fruit that were handy on our first morning after coming straight from the airport the evening before. She also had a lot of travel brochures, maps and other information at the cottage. The kitchen has all the basics including some spices and oil. There were plenty of towels in the bathroom. We would definitely stay here again and it would definitely be comfortable for a much longer stay.
Darya was cordial and after a few minutes, we built a nice rapport. The two bedroom place was indeed charming, quiet, clean, convenient to Hilo just a few miles north of there, but also convenient for exploring Puna, the southeast district of the Island. Darya offered a helpful suggestion to avoid some nearby congestion, gave good tips on local restaurants in Pahoa and Hilo, and left a helpful island guidebook. We were just delighted and would highly recommend the place.
Notre séjour a été très agréable. Le cottage est très grand, bien équipé et nous avons eu des œufs frais et des fruits. Il nous a été facile de visiter, depuis le cottage, le volcano parc, la région de hilo et les pools de kapoho (recommandé :) ).
// We had a very nice stay there. The cottage is very spacious, well equipped and we got fresh eggs and some fruits. The location allowed us to easily visit the volcano park, the hilo region and snorkel in the very nice pools in kapoho.
My family of three very much enjoyed our stay at Darya's cottage. Darya greeted us and showed us around. She also provided us with eggs, papayas and other fresh fruit. The cottage is well appointed and nicely decorated. We enjoyed the lush garden and spending time on the porch. We loved the setting and the relaxed, informal atmosphere. It was a perfect base from which to explore Hilo and other areas along the east coast.
The cottage was amazing and Darya was one of the nicest people we met on our whole trip. The house was very clean and private and at the end of a dead end street. It exceeded all our expectations. Darya was truly a great host. She gave us our privacy, but was available at a moments notice if we needed anything, like fresh eggs from her chickens. Outside of getting married, staying here was one of the best experiences of our trip.
My wife and I had a wonderful experience staying in Darya's property. She was welcoming and the property was very comfortable. Although we did not bring our kids, it would have been a family friendly venue. This is a great value.
We stayed 3 nights to explore the east side of the Big Island. Darya greeted us when we arrived and showed us around the ohana. We loved the fresh eggs and fruit that were provided. Also it was very neat that she did compost and was an avid recycler so we essentially did not produce any trash! The house was clean and quiet. The kitchen had everything we needed to make dinners in the evening. We loved listening to the nature noises at night while falling asleep. The location was extremely convenient to explore Puna, Hilo, and Hawai'i Volcanoes national park. Everything was a 30 minute or or less drive away. There were grocery stores nearby and the Hilo farmers market on the weekend was awesome! Overall our stay was very comfortable and I would highly recommend this place.

I grew up in California, and came to the Big Island of Hawaii 9 years ago. I love plants and food, children and animals, art and photography. I would love to travel to Europe again, but first I hope to travel to Asia: China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, and to eat my way through every delicious region!
But until then, meeting people from all parts of the world as they travel to our beautiful, welcoming island is just perfect!
