Wandawega Lake Resort/Camp Wandawega is a private friends & family retreat, not a “proper” resort. We are proud to be recognized by The U.S. Department of the Interior National Register of Historic Places. We are carrying on the proud 90-plus year history of reconnecting people to the simple pleasures of simple times in a no-frills, recreational camp setting. All of our guests are here as part of preplanned recreational friends & family camp programs: sorry, but we do not accept random “walk-ins” or “transients.” But all are welcome to join us on Sunday mornings for Catholic "mass-in-the-grass" service, a 50-plus year old tradition; Sunday's at 10am weather permitting.
To support the ongoing renovation of this historic property and the largely philanthropic camp activities, we are continuing the tradition of making a very limited number of accommodations available for self-guided "friends-and-family" recreational camp programs during the summer months. This listing is not intended to be rented by itself, but along with the adjacent "Modest Cottage Two" so that you and your friends/family can enjoy your own small-scale, self-guided recreational camp. Again, we are not a "proper" resort, so if you require an immediate response, lots of hand-holding and attention to detail, then this just might not be the best fit for you. OK, you've been warned : ) Thanks.
Get "back to basics" at Camp Wandawega. Our GUESTS AREN'T RENTING A RANDOM CABIN OR HOTEL ROOM as much as they are immersing themselves, their friends and family into the whole old-school camp experience featuring a full agenda of recreational camp activities such as canoeing, boating, fishing, hiking, biking, horse shoes, tennis, shuffleboard, archery, campfires & s'mores. The fact that we have no modern conveniences is part of our charm. If you're not sure this is for you we suggest coming up for a visit and a tour before staying with us. If you’d like to see more, numerous aspects of Camp Wandawega were featured in Tereasa Surratt’s books “Found, Free and Flea” & “A Very Modest Cottage.” Also, search for Camp Wandawega on (website hidden), Instagram, you tube and vimeo to see us through the eyes of the many who have visited through the years. All of our guests are here as part of preplanned recreational friends & family camp programs: we do not accept random “walk-ins” or “transients.”
This private, vintage, modest one-bedroom cabin overlooks a pristine lake and wetlands, nestled within the legendary Wandawega Lake Resort, aka Camp Wandawega. The cabin can sleep up to 2 guests. For all intents and purposes, there is no heat or AC: just windows to open, and a lake breeze. Please check the weather before you come, and bring an extra sleeping bag if it’s going to be chilly at night.
Our guests have access to all that Camp Wandawega has to offer, from a private beach, a private fishing pier, canoes, rowboats, trails, volleyball, basketball, shuffleboard, etc. Our guests have access to simply, back-to-basics camp showers, like you recall from your childhood summer camp. Outdoor grills and smokers are also available, as are a number of nearby restaurants, bars, and grills. If you’re looking for fine lodging, look elsewhere: this is old school cabin-living, like you remember from summer camp. Pets may be allowed with special arrangements; additional fees may apply. Maximum number of guests must be agreed upon before booking.
What should I bring you ask? For starters, the camp basics. A few beach towels. Some Deep Woods Off. Sunscreen. And flip flops. If you have a favorite blankie, sleeping bag and pillow, bring them too, as I’m sure they’re more comfy that what we have : ) As for food, we suggest that you shop local. Bring an empty cooler and fill it up at the Elkhorn Piggly Wiggly and Frank’s Liquors. Or The Elegant Farmer. There’s plenty of local produce, meats, cheeses, beer, wine and booze for appetites and budgets of all sizes. The Mobil on Cty A has bait, food, wine, ice, booze and beer too. Plus a nice little taqueria within. Most of our friends and family live out of coolers when they’re here, grilling out, and frequenting local restaurants like Holi Canolli, The Chalet, and Sperino’s.
Again, this is not a "proper" resort, it is a private, friends-and-family retreat that is making a few cabins/cottages available on a very limited basis for recreational camp activities. As such, it is very informal and causal, so please be patient with us, as we are not always available to instantly answer questions. Before staying with us, please request a copy of our "Manifesto of Low Expectations" : ) All guests will be asked to sign a release of liability. Please also know that Camp Wandawega still hosts Sunday morning Catholic "mass in the grass" at 10am, weather permitting, a tradition dating back to the early 1960s when the property was still owned by The Latvian Marian Fathers. Just don't want you to be surprised if you're there on a Sunday morn and awaken to find 100-plus worshipers gathered at the nearby outdoor chapel : )

This is a beautiful place in all seasons. We came here as part of our honeymoon and loved everything about it. The hospitality is outstanding, the surroundings gorgeous and the accommodations a stylish, "high camp retro mod" Will be coming back for sure.
My husband and I had planned this trip in the winter as a way to kick off the summer, and it met every expectation! From all the activities available (archery, tennis, boating, pool, darts, bonfires) to the amazing decor, we had one of the best weekends. David & Tereasa and their family, including their adorable daughter Charlie were so incredibly welcoming, and our pup Addie had the best time running off the dock with their dog Frankie. We will definitely make this an annual trip! Many thanks to Tereasa & David for sharing your home with us!
Words cannot describe our experience at Camp Wandawega. From the fantastic hospitality of the groundskeepers (Bill and Joe) to the beautiful design aesthetic to lazy afternoons in hammocks, we were simply amazed by everything.
Immediately upon arriving we began planning for our next adventure up to Wisconsin (this time with more friends) and decided on the spot that Camp Wandawega would be our new tradition.
We loved being able to take open-air showers (which are very conveniently located next to the Very Modest Cottage), having everything to build a fire, and the views of the lake are magical. The camp is just a short drive to town where you can stock up on provisions and there is access to a small kitchen with limited supplies and of course, the campfire and grills.
Yes, the stay is a bit of an investment, but when you arrive, you'll immediately "get it." Highly recommended!
My girlfriend and I stayed at Camp Wandawega for 3 nights and couldn't be more happy with our stay. You truly feel like you are stepping back in time when you arrive, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Tereasa and David were wonderful hosts. The camp has everything you need in the way of entertainment, but there is also plenty to do if you venture out. My only complaint is that I am now suffering Wandawega Withdrawals as I type this. We can't wait to go back.
Such a great place to stay. Peaceful, fully equipped yet modest, tons to do. We stayed at the Very Modest Cottage the last 2 nights of a road trip I took with my daughter after school was let out and it was the perfect ending to a trip all about a seven year old. We'll be returning again and again, a tradition has been born. I wasn't sure what we'd need from the listing and there was access to a kitchen with amenities as well as AC in our modest cottage. There was a sports equip. room and fire wood. All we needed were our toiletries and a few groceries (and s'more fixings!).
When I think of summer camps, I have fond memories from my childhood. Having grown up in the foothills of the Adirondacks of NY, I spent a lot of time hiking, canoeing and camping; spending time with friends and family and enjoying the outdoors. After moving to Chicago a couple years ago, I'd been greatly missing that with all the hustle and bustle of the city. My girlfriend, Kelsey, sent me the link for Camp Wandawega and I instantly knew this was exactly the type of vacation we needed. David and Tereasa have done such an amazing job with the camp. It's definitely not for those looking to be pampered, but perfect for those that can roll up their sleeves and really enjoy the outdoors. We had so much fun canoeing, sitting by the campfire next to our cabin and playing card games in the treehouse. We truly can't wait to go back.
We loved our stay at Camp Wandawega! It was the perfect place to get away and do some low key relaxing. We filled our days with fishing on the lake, badmitton, archery, basketball, and walks. We spent our evenings playing cards and building campfires. The Very Modest Cottage is cozy and charming, the lake beautiful and serene, the camp idyllic, and the hosts kind and welcoming. Looking forward to going back again, sometime.
