Interaction with Guests

The hosts have lived in the area for 12 years, are very active in the cultural community and are excellent guides to the best restaurants attractions and out of the way places that tourists often miss. They will provide as much or as little as individual guests like and /or need and are very sensitive to different tastes among their guests.

The Neighborhood

La Conchita is right near the famous Rincon surfing beach and the harbor seal viewing area of the Carpinteria bluffs, the home is located 15 miles south of Santa Barbara and 15 miles North of Ventura CA. Just 40 minutes north of Malibu and about an hour and half to LA. There is so much to see and do in Carpinteria ( 3 miles away), Santa Barbara and Ventura you will not even want to think about LA and the traffic! La Conchita boasts a lush unique micro climate like Hawaii. It is a botanical wonderland and over the Santa Ynez Mountains is Lake Casitas and the beautiful town of Ojai, not to be missed! This will be a California dream vacation to be remembered and you will be back. Highway 101 is undergoing some major construction at this time, so guests may anticipate a few detours along the way.

Getting around

A car is absolutely necessary in this part of CA. Navigation is pretty easy. Everything is oriented on highway 101 or PCH the old Pacific Coast Highway where the highway still runs pretty close to the ocean. In Santa Barbara & our little beach town of Carpinteria just 3 miles North over the Santa Barbara County line there are trolleys that will take you around town. Parking is a joy in Ventura, Santa Barbara , Carpinteria & Ojai. Public Parking is either free for a certain amount of time downtown and then at a nominal cost per hour or totally free in Ventura, Ojai & Carp. That's why the downtown areas are lively after dark and thriving!

Other Things to Note

Your host is the historian of this area and along with two other educators has published a book about the unique history of the three beach towns along this stretch of the coast. There are indeed many very interesting stories she has to tell for those who are interested.

  • Bonnie was great about providing directions and showing us around, as well as accommodating our late arrival. Her place was fantastic - a melange of cross-cultural art and decor. The only thing we could have hoped any more for was a dining table to some place to sit down and eat, but otherwise, it was a really gorgeous place to stay.

  • Staying with Bonnie and Bill (B&B!) was a wonderful experience. I picked it because it was half-way between Santa Barbara and Ventura which made it easy to explore both areas. We were given a lot of useful info on where to go and how best to get around by the hosts. The place was amazing - lots of art and books which meant always something to browse through and admire. We were even given fresh squeezed orange juice from the tree in the mediation garden (what a way to start the day!). This was a fantastic mini-vacation for us and I really appreciate the care Bonnie and Bill put into their hosting. Thanks again!

  • It was such a pleasure to say with Bonnie and Bill, view their beautiful home and garden, and learn about the rich history of La Conchita. The stay was very short but the guest apartment was lovely and filled with fascinating treasures! I looked forward to returning! Bonnie and Bill were incredibly gracious hosts and, like so many of the other reviews, I felt spoiled by their hospitality. Wether you stay for a night or a week, they'll make sure you know how to find the best beach views, restaurants, or federally protected seal overlook! A great stay with so much history, nature, and learning. Absolutely loved it.

    Response from Bonnie:

Thanks so much Anastasia. We really appreciate the review. Bill & I work hard to give our guests a unique experience, but want them to feel at home too. We love sharing our little place in paradise with newcomers.

  • Our stay was a wonderful experience. Bonnie and Bill shared a wealth of knowledge about La Conchita, the way to get to secret beaches, places to eat, and the local history. We had scrumptious waffles with strawberries and whip cream for breakfast. We saw the turtle in the pond. We watched the NFC and AFC football championship games on an amazing HD widescreen TV. Loved our visit and the conversations with our hosts. You will not be disappointed. Like one other reviewer said, they spoil you.

  • This was my first Airbnb experience and I'm afraid that Bonnie and Bill may have spoiled me for anywhere else. They are extremely gracious and helpful hosts, providing the perfect amount of interaction and privacy. The first morning was wonderful - delicious waffles, great conversations, lots of suggestions on things to do and see. The home is beautiful and comfortable. The week went way too fast and I'm looking forward to returning next year :)

  • Me And my boyfriend had a really good time at Bonnie's guest apartment. The apartment is pretty big and comfortable. One day we got a really good breakfast and they always helped us out when we've had questions. Thanks a lot! I would definetly recommend staying at Bonnie's place!

  • It was a delight to stay at 'Casa Makai'. The whole weekend was perfect; from engaging in wonderfully delightful conversations with Bonnie and Bill over delicious waffles, to browsing their amazing artwork and books and relaxing in the beautiful La Conchita. We hope to return again. Thank you for sharing your treasure!

  • Bonnie's guest home is filled with books and interesting pieces of art. The place is spacious and very clean. My husband and I stayed there for 3 nights while in Ventura for business. While we didn't get spend to spend a lot of time there it was a tranquil place to come home to at night. They left us fresh squeezed OJ from their tree, what a treat! Each morning I saw multiple hummingbirds in the garden. It was very quiet at night and we slept great. They have DirectTV so my husband was able to watch the A's games. I would not hesitate to stay there again!

  • As everyone has already said, staying with Bonnie and Bill was absolutely amazing. We were welcomed so warmly. On the first morning we were cooked Bill's legendary banana waffles with fresh Californian strawberries and freshly squeezed orange juice, which were incredible! The apartment was beautifully decorated including Bill's sculptures and Bonnie's ubiquitous books and art pieces. We had a wonderful time visiting the beaches and restaurants of La Conchita and Carpinteria, and would visit again in a heartbeat if we had the time/money!

  • What an absolute pleasure it was to meet both Bonnie and Bill and to stay at their wonderful home in La Conchita (right next to Santa Barbara). It was exactly what I was looking for and I couldn't have been happier. Bonnie and Bill could easily have their picture next to a dictionary entry of "good people". Both of them are very warm and thoughtful and shared their knowledge of this charming and uniquely beautiful area (Bonnie literally helped right a book on it and has an enormous amount of knowledge about La Conchita and the surrounding area). Throughout the household one will find hundreds of interesting books and artifacts that Bonnie and Bill have collected over the years in which I found fascinating. Bill is a great cook and I was also lucky enough to also share some of his vegetable/fruit juice that he made on two occasions! I left their home refreshed and clear and I honestly would like to adopt them as my 2nd set of parents :). You can't go wrong staying at their little slice of heaven. Perfectly located right next to the Ventura/Santa Barbara beaches. If you are into spirituality, don't forget to check out Summerland and in particular, The Sacred Space (a few miles away).

My husband Bill & I, after years of hard work, were lucky enough to land in paradise! I am a retired University Art History Professor and University Museum Director who has held positions at three great institutions over a thirty year career. They were: Miami University, The College of William & Mary, and University of California, Santa Barbara. I am also a cancer survivor who has learned how to appreciate life. I now do art consulting, but my real love is making art and jewelry along with my husband Bill who is a sculptor. The historical research & writing bug never left me, however, which is why I threw myself into documenting the history of my community once I realized that nobody knew about it. I co-authored a history of the area entitled: Greater Carpinteria, Summerland, and, La Conchita. The book is available through Amazon and Arcadia Publications. I attended Buffalo State University College, Bowling Green University and The Ohio State University. You can learn more about me by visiting my websites: (website hidden) and (website hidden) Bill is a practicing sculptor of 50 odd years working in all the major media but concentrating mostly on wooden constructs using repurposed materials and the endless supply of driftwood from the LaConchita beach.  Examples of his art are part of the art collection on display in and around Casa Makai including the guest apartment, a stone pond, garden shed, and signature wreath on the street facade .  His work featuring many functional pieces like tables, chairs lamps and bowls are created in the garage/studio. He attended Bishop Noll HS, Hammond, Ind; Loras College, Dubuque, IA; The Art Institute Chicago ; Mexico City College; Ohio State University. In addition he has an active business carving Ice Sculpture for the SoCal catering and party market and owns the patent for a massage tool. His creativity extends to exploits in the kitchen to the delight of our guests. Our home, known as Casa Makai, is one large art gallery. We have a complete guest apartment with a full bath, kitchenette and library/livingroom that we make available to family and friends. Bill & I also love to travel and have been all over the U.S, parts of Central America, Western Europe and Asia.
