Interaction with Guests
The hosts have lived in the area for 12 years, are very active in the cultural community and are excellent guides to the best restaurants attractions and out of the way places that tourists often miss. They will provide as much or as little as individual guests like and /or need and are very sensitive to different tastes among their guests.
La Conchita is a get away from it all destination. There are no commercial businesses here. Groceries, restaurants & other facilities can be found 3 miles north of LC in Carpinteria . Our beautiful beach is reached easily by walking to the bottom of our block. There is a large breezy passageway under the highway that leads directly to the beach. La Conchita is right near the famous Rincon surfing beach and the harbor seal viewing area of the Carpinteria bluffs, the home is located 15 miles south of Santa Barbara and 15 miles North of Ventura CA. Just 40 minutes north of Malibu and about an hour and half to LA. There is so much to see and do in Carpinteria ( 3 miles away), Santa Barbara and Ventura you will not even want to think about LA and the traffic! La Conchita boasts a lush unique micro climate like Hawaii. It is a botanical wonderland and over the Santa Ynez Mountains is Lake Casitas and the beautiful town of Ojai, not to be missed! This will be a California dream vacation to be remembered and you will be back. Highway 101 is undergoing some major construction at this time, so guests may anticipate a few detours along the way.
A car is absolutely necessary in this part of CA. Navigation is pretty easy. Everything is oriented on highway 101 or PCH the old Pacific Coast Highway where the highway still runs pretty close to the ocean. In Santa Barbara & our little beach town of Carpinteria just 3 miles North over the Santa Barbara County line there are trolleys that will take you around town. Parking is a joy in Ventura, Santa Barbara , Carpinteria & Ojai. Public Parking is either free for a certain amount of time downtown and then at a nominal cost per hour or totally free in Ventura, Ojai & Carp. That's why the downtown areas are lively after dark and thriving!

Casa Makai is exactly what you hope for in an airbnb stay. A well loved home that is comfortable and clean. Friendly, helpful hosts who give you private space but are there when you have questions or need help. I can only say that the description and photos don't give it justice; the apartment is much larger than it appears in the photos as is the beautiful garden . The fresh orange juice from the gorgeous orange tree in the garden was wonderful. My husband has some disabilities and the apartment worked fine for him using a walker and a transport chair. What more can we say other than we would return in a heartbeat?
This place was truly excellent. Bonnie and Bill are gracious hosts. They were very welcoming and gave us good ideas for local things to do. They gave us space when we wanted and were social and inviting when appropriate. Can't stress how cool they are. We had a great time and would definitely come back again.
Everything was perfect, we got plenty of fresh orange juice from the tree in the back yard, the house is filled with lots of art by Bonnie, they welcomed us and were very helpful, dont forget to visit Solvang if you have time, looking forward to stay there again
This apartment is lovely, as are the hosts. The apartment is spacious, quiet and has everything you need. The beach is a 5 minute walk under Hwy 101 - it's almost as if it's a private beach just for Las Conchita! The neighborhood is eclectic, but feels welcoming and safe. I will reserve this guest apartment again!
It is a beautiful place. Right near the ocean! Stunning wildlife at the beach: pelicans, seals and dolphins. And wonderful hosts! I am very glad that Airbnb connected us with such kind people. We really felt at home.
The collection of books and art in the house is extraordinary. I most definitely recommend this place and we are sure to come here again. Bonnie and Bill, thank you for everything!
Bonnie and Bill are amazing host. There is a construction project in hwy101 so it would be easy to miss the La Conchita exit. Thanks to Bonnie's instruction I found the right way to the house easily.
The house is so beautiful. Bonnie has many art work and you can see them every corner of the house. Plenty of food was supplied and the kitchen is well equiped. It just feel like home.
If you looking for a clean, tidy and quier place to stay, I stongely recommed this house to you.
About the Host, Bonnie
My husband Bill & I, after years of hard work, were lucky enough to land in paradise! I am a retired University Art History Professor and University Museum Director who has held positions at three great institutions over a thirty year career. They were: Miami University, The College of William & Mary, and University of California, Santa Barbara. I am also a cancer survivor who has learned how to appreciate life. I now do art consulting, but my real love is making art and jewelry along with my husband Bill who is a sculptor. The historical research & writing bug never left me, however, which is why I threw myself into documenting the history of my community once I realized that nobody knew about it. I co-authored a history of the area entitled: Greater Carpinteria, Summerland, and, La Conchita. The book is available through Amazon and Arcadia Publications. I attended Buffalo State University College, Bowling Green University and earned my Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. You can learn more about me by visiting my websites:

Bill is a practicing sculptor of 50 odd years working in all the major media but concentrating mostly on wooden constructs using repurposed materials and the endless supply of driftwood from the LaConchita beach. Examples of his art are part of the art collection on display in and around Casa Makai including the guest apartment, a stone pond, garden shed, and signature wreath on the street facade . His work featuring many functional pieces like tables, chairs lamps and bowls are created in the garage/studio. He attended Bishop Noll HS, Hammond, Ind; Loras College, Dubuque, IA; The Art Institute Chicago ; Mexico City College; Ohio State University. In addition he has an active business carving Ice Sculpture for the SoCal catering and party market and owns the patent for a massage tool. His creativity extends to exploits in the kitchen to the delight of our guests.
Our home, known as Casa Makai, is one large art gallery. We have a complete guest apartment with a full bath, kitchenette and library/livingroom that we make available to family and friends. Bill & I also love to travel and have been all over the U.S, parts of Central America, Western Europe and Asia. Our mantra for living life to the fullest? Joseph Campbell said it best: "Follow your Bliss."
