A lovely big room in a spacious house in Johore Bahru only 30 minutes drive from Singapore. Ideal for people who want a value-for-money accomodation and a quick getaway from Singapore.
Johor Baru or JB as the locals call this city is the gateway to Malaysia if you are flying in from Singapore. JB is still genuinely lovely without tourists and situated on the sea, it is a short distance from Pulau Tioman, a beautiful island already discovered by tourists. In JB you have an opportunity to taste the local Malay cuisine which is different from Kuala Lumpur. Behind my house 5 minutes walk takes you to a Malay kampong or fishing village and there are Malay style restuarants selling fresh seafood and satay. One of the best kept secrets from western tourists is that it is here that you can get the best nasi lemak, a traditional and very famous dish of Malaysia. Nasi lemak is rice cooked in coconut milk and served with a variety of curries and other condiments and fresh cucumber. You have not been to Malaysia if you have not eaten nasi lemak at least once somewhere. In front of my house a five minute walk takes you to a row of shops that sell everything under the sun. A 10 minute walk takes you to Jusco shopping mall with KFC and McDonalds waving at you.
From JB a car drive to Kuala Lumpur is about 3 and a half hours. Taxis, buses and trains are regular and cheap from JB up north to Penang. Good and cheaper way to see Malaysia from south to north instead of flying. Or using tour agents. Cabs run on meters in JB now and easily available with a phone call. Or hail one on the streets.
My house is being cared for by my sister who used to work as assistant housekeeper at Raffles Hotel Singapore. In retirement she misses her many guests so I suggested this airbnb for her as I am thoroughly enjoying doing the same in Melbourne. She will meet and greet you in Singapore if necessary and bring you back to our little cosy home for the same charge as a cab. Or she will organise a cab from JB to meet and greet u in Singapore n bring you back to our house.
The bedroom is cool and meticulously clean, freshly painted and is a very serene room as I do my yoga and meditation in it whenever I am there. The balcony outside the bedroom is a real bonus as sipping a drink in the evening sun, or coffee in the morning, you can enjoy what it means to be "living" amongst the locals. 3 or 4 days here to get over jetlag is a nice option instead of staying in expensive Singapore just to sleep.
Shopping is possible in the duty free zone here in JB. A lot of Singaporeans come over to shop and pay lower prices compared to their own city. Why not you? Be our guest and have some travellers' tales to tell to your friends back home. Selamat datang to JB! Welcome to JB!
PS olympic size pool 5 mins drive from our house. Admission is 6 ringgits. Maureen will drop and pick up if she's free. But a cab will take u just as well.
The recent opening of the second bridge is a blessing because it takes only 10 mins to our house from the customs and immigration check point after you leave the Singaporean check point. How is that eh? This means in non peak hours, it takes approximately 10-15 mins for you to cross over to Singapore and vice versa.
Moni,s home in JB is very comfortable and the guest bedroom is huge with a big bathroom. There is a TV for the bedroom and tea and coffee facilities in the room.
Maureen is Monis sister and she lives in the house with her husband and friendly dog Sumi. Maureen was so helpful with advice about how to use the bus to the city etc. She and her husband took me to great hawker style restaurant one night and a walk around the local district. It was a really good Malaysian experience.
If you take a taxi from Singapore to JB it costs Sing $50. Maureen may be able help organize. The taxi from the home to bus terminal in JB costs around 15 RM. It was fun to visit little India and Chinatown downtown.
Maureen was a gracious, warm and friendly hostess who has the best interest of her guest at heart. A truly lovely lady.
moni's sister is a very nice lady who will look after you with care! The room is very comfortable
Maureen is a very friendly and helpful person. We both felt very safe at her place. She was very kind to us and gave us plenty of tips to make our short stay safe and enjoyable.Haus was very clean and room was very comfortable. She even arranged a taxi for us to Mersing to a reasonable rate. We would suggest this place to any one who looks for a safe place in (website hidden) the way area has all facilities at walking distance.
My husband, Jeff, and I had a most wonderful stay with Maureen, Moni's sister. The house was beautiful and our room was very large and comfortable. Maureen provided us with breakfast which was unexpected, but a very nice surprise! She also provided us with all the tea and coffee that we wanted in our room. She even took us to catch the bus the 2 times we went to Singapore, even though it is within walking distance. It was a lovely and restful place, with places of interest to walk to. We hated to say goodbye to Maureen, her dog and cat!
Maureen was a perfect host , friendly and generous with her time and advice ( as was Moni !) The room was spacious , quiet and comfortable ; if you are look for a break in JB en route to or from Singapore this is recommended !
we enjoyed our stay with Moni's sister, Maureen. She could not have been a better host! the room was more than we expected, with a lot of room for two people including your own sitting area and bathroom! Johor is only 30 mins from singapore and Moni arranged for us to be brought over by taxi. I highly recommend this option as it was a hassle free ride. (drive through immigration, we did not even have to get out of the car- the bus requires you to disembark to go through immigration). Johor is a good rest stop if you are traveling the SE Asian peninsula. There isn't much to do in the immediate vicinity of the house and the area isn't the safest (Maureen said so and to be careful) but once your inside its lovely and very easy to relax. Be sure to spend some time with Sumai, the dog, as she is quite calming.
