Lovely place to post up and enjoy the beach scene, surf and relax. Internet connection available too. Close to the action but just far enough away to be able to chill. Your porch overlooks the beach and your room is airy with well appointe tile bath
Right on and overlooking one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, La Vista is a airy open and breezy. There is a lovely above it all porch and fully tiled bathroom with high pressure shower ( the water tank is in a tree! ) Lovely place to post up and enjoy the beach scene, surf and relax. Internet connection available too. Close to the action but just far enough away to be able to chill.
There are several chill places to hang out on the grounds as well as you own front porch. You have use of a common kitchen to keep the beer cold and enjoy home cooked meals
We are right on the beach in a cool little Nica fishing village. You can walk to four surfspots or charter a boat for long range trips to 14 other spots. But this is an inspired community. There are many thing to do beside surf and beach walk. The beach next door is the most beautiful beach in Nicaragua. IMO!
Gorgeous place right in the beach.
Felt very safe with all the cute dogs.
We encounted minor Problems with the shower and insects, but Dale's staff was always very friendly and helpful!!
Get a Message with Miriam, she's doing a really good relaxing massage for very cheap, right on the property.
Dale made getting to and from Gigante super easy, arranging a taxi from the airport and to my next destination. His staff were great and the room was really clean. It was a great room and wonderful experience overall - I met some really nice people, relaxed and learned to surf (go to the Monkey House and ask for Oliver). The only downside was that there was construction going on, so it was noisy during the day, otherwise it would have been a perfect stay!
I loved being at Dale's so much that I brought my friends back 3 weeks later to celebrate one of their birthdays. Here is what they had to say:
We stayed for 5 days in La Ocean Vista. It was incredibly clean and we loved it.
Veronica arranged a massage with Miriam and it was the best massage I’ve ever had in my life for a very reasonable price. Jeanette introduced us to another woman that brought us beautiful scarves for us to bring home to our friends.
It was amazing to have the ocean on our doorstep and we swam every day. The other guests were friendly. The shared kitchen and washroom were clean and easy to use. Such a great place to relax.
Dale was excellent to deal with. He was very responsive and extremely accommodating. He arranged a car to pick us up from Granada, then take us to Managua for our departure.
The space was nearly identical to the listing; small spaces are hard to represent digitally.
The neighborhood was noticeably friendly, many smiles and 'hola's in the morning. Lack of A/C, not even a problem. Lots of air movement really kept it cool, especially at night.
Dale and staff were regularly on site. The staff's English was very limited but they were very friendly and hardworking.
The compound is right on the beach and in close proximity to some great restaurants (family owned and operated), I highly recommend seeing Lenny up at Buena Vista. Not only are their tacos (more like quesdillas) delicious but the view is one of the best you will ever see, overlooking Playa Amarillo.
We really enjoyed our time here, including meeting the other guests in Dale's group of cool places to stay. It was very relaxed and definitely worth the small investment if you are looking to clear your mind and have some peace.
The wifi was fairly decent. In some areas, the signal was limited but when in the main area or the closest side of the suite, it was on par with regular speed standards.
If you are looking for a great place to stay for a good price, look no further. It isn't a question of if we will be back, it's a question of how long it will take before we get back. Highly recommend.
We'd definitely stay here again anytime!
Dale was the best host! He gave clear directions on how to find his place. He was on site to make great recommendations re: where to swim, learn Spanish, eat, hike, etc. We lost our key (the only one) and he was super helpful by being friendly about changing the lock. We needed to borrow a phone, he was the first to offer his with specifics about where to get the best reception. He had motorcycles to rent, sweet dogs, and a sense of humor. His was the cleanest place we stayed on this trip, everything was as pictured in the listing. It seemed there was always someone on site with a smiling "Hola" or "Buenas dias".
The ocean view was excellent, the sense of community created among the other guests was magical. (Shared kitchen) I'm betting Dale contributes to this by knowing when to step forward and help, and when to hang back. The staff were all friendly, patient and willing to move slowly enough for me to practice my rudimentary Spanish with them.
Stay here! It's a wonderful spot.
Dale's La Ocean Vista was the perfect place for us to stay for our 11 day stay in Gigante. There was just enough space for us (you definitely wouldn't stay there with more than 2 people who will share the double bed) and it was really nice to be elevated - loved having coffee on the little porch in the morning. There isn't any hot water but that was no big deal at all. We didn't know if/when someone would come through to clean our place but a woman did show up halfway through our stay - we felt bad because we didn't know she was coming and our stuff was everywhere! It was very nice to have her come through, and after that we were much better about keeping our sandy shoes outside, etc. Wifi was solid.
We worked with Dale ahead of time to secure a ride from the airport -- though it was a bit tricky to get ahold of him initially, once we wrote his email directly it was easy to set up. It cost $80 US one way, but it's a 2.5+ hour drive and we were very happy to have someone else navigating it. Dale was also flexible when we had to change our plans at the last minute to arrive a day later -- the ride was waiting for us when we arrived! As we were only there for 11 days (a short stay compared to those we met!), we only got eggs, tortillas, water, and Gatorade at the store in Rivas when we stopped on the way. Buying water and Gatorade at the store in Gigante was easy and still very cheap, so don't worry about running out.
We ate out for most of our meals and it can be cheap if you don't mind eating the same thing. We regularly went to the Spanish school next door for our meals. They have your basic fish or chicken, rice and beans, and fried plantains, and sometimes they have fish or bean soup which is also great. Bueno Vista up the hill has an absolutely beautiful sunset view, and for some variety and sometimes a more rowdy scene you can head down the road to the hostel. We avoided places like Blue Sol in the middle of town because they seemed unnecessarily more expensive.
Overall, Gigante is a GREAT find in Nicaragua. We were so pleased with our time there--the perfect mix of rugged and comfortable. Felt very safe and the people are friendly. Mid-November was an excellent time to visit. We will absolutely be back.
We never actually saw Dale (I think he was in Mexico), but we really liked the crowd staying in his other places. Pretty low-key, interesting, and we could always do our own thing or sit down for nice conversation/go to dinner together.
Bring bug spray, we did end up with something chikungunya-like upon our return (to be confirmed).

I left my home in San Diego California to go live in a shack on the North Shore of Oahu. I caught the surf bug early and have spent many years exploring the coastline from San Francisco to the Colombian border. Looking for good waves, nice people and prefect weather. Playa Gigante is where I stopped looking and started building. I believe Playa Gigante is one of the most magic spots on this coast and I have build several small comfortable house to stay in. I hope you will also find the magic that I enjoy here in Playa Gigante.
