Interaction with Guests
I'm passionate about sharing my local knowledge, with plenty of tips and suggestions. Oaxaca is a very social town, with guests sometimes enjoying dinner or drinks together. Or feel free to enjoy your privacy.
I can also coordinate tours to local attractions and surrounding towns.
Our location is excellent, just one and a half blocks from Santo Domingo and five blocks from the Zocalo.
We are next door to a gymnasium and three blocks from a good market (Sanchez Pascuas). We are close to everything you need e.g. laundry, pharmacy and many great restaurants. But if you need to anything around town please don't hesitate to ask.
Centro Oaxaca is very safe and beautiful to walk around. Taxis are also generally easy to come by. If you wish to visit attractions outside of town you have option to take a bus, taxi or visit via an organised tour.

Jose was a great host and he made us feel very welcome. He invited us to try mescal and to do activities with other people in the household. The rooftop was a wonderful place to hang out. The location was close to lots of restaurants and the walking streets. The description was accurate. It was very clean with all the amenities. I would definitely stay there again. If not, I would stop by to see Jose and his mom, Cote.
My stay at Jose's apartment was wonderful. I was in Oaxaca for six weeks during the summer to study Spanish. The size and accommodations of the apartment were perfect for me. A combination living/kitchen area, bedroom, and bathroom. Complete with double bed, dresser, security safe, desk, fan, couch, arm chair, small TV, dining table, breakfast bar, mini fridge, microwave, blender, stovetop, and some dishes. It had everything I needed, including WIFI and a portagarrafon for purified water.
The location of the apartment, just one and a half blocks from Santo Domingo, could not be any better. It is in the square center of the city, with walking distance to everything I wanted/needed during the six weeks. The only time I needed to catch a cab was to and from the airport. The cost of the apartment was very reasonable, especially considering this advantageous location. You also have access to the rooftop terrace while renting the apartment, which is accessed by going upstairs through the main home of Jose. The views of the city from the roof are breathtaking. The only downside of the apartment is that it shares it's walls with the neighboring gym, which plays an array of music from 80's American pop to twitchy techno throughout the day. However, once the gym closes at night, the apartment is completely quiet. Having stayed in the center of Oaxaca previously, I know there will always be noise disturbances whether it is the noisy bar or busy restaurant, the gym was not too bad in comparison.
Jose was a great host! On my first night, he made sure I felt welcomed and comfortable and even took me to get tacos after a long day of flights and traveling, which was greatly appreciated. He was quick and responsive to emails when I had questions. He replaced the big jug of water when it had been emptied. The apartment was cleaned approximately once every two weeks, which worked well for me. He even brought myself and two other guests at the time to some of the main attractions of Oaxaca on two subsequent weekends, which would otherwise be a little tricky and a little expensive to get to as out-of-towners. He was a wonderful host with a lot of information to share about Oaxaca, and he speaks really great English (despite what he says!), so communication was never an issue.
I highly recommend Jose as a host and his apartments for rent while in Oaxaca. He has two apartments on the ground floor and I believe three rooms in his home with private bathrooms for rent as well. When I return to Oaxaca, I would certainly stay here again and highly recommend it for my friends and family. Thanks Jose!
We couldn't have asked for a more perfect location to live for 7 weeks and to truly experience Oaxaca so easily.
I think it's important to point out that the house is attached to a very loud gym that plays loud pop music 6:30am -10pm Monday-Friday, and then shorter hours on Saturday(it closes at 3pm). The windows are great at keeping the noise out but if you like to keep them open for fresh air then you'll have to listen to Katy Perry a lot. FYI: if you don't want to buy a membership you can buy a card good for 10 visits for $500 pesos.
Our place was on the first floor and is perfect if you're there during the hot season like we were. The apartment stayed very cool compared to the outside heat.
Jose, our host, was wonderful! His family has decades of hosting international students so he is aware and thoughtful towards his guests' needs. Plus, he makes an amazing tlayuda and has excellent mezcal taste! Definitely try "El Rey de Matatlan" reposado if you have the opportunity. One of my favorite memories of our stay there was just hanging out on the terrace on Jose's birthday and getting to chat with his uncle (former coffee grower), nephew, and his cousin (I think) who makes commercial mezcal, and listening to various Spanish language singers on YouTube. These are the type of moments why I love traveling.
The terrace on the third floor is WONDERFUL!! You can see Santo Domingo Church to the east and Guelaguetza to the west. I had a couple of friends stop by and they were very jealous of the terrace. :)
I can't stress enough how perfectly located this apartment is to amenities (we used a lavanderia two blocks south on Garcia Virgil) and convenient access to all the enjoyment of Oaxaca. Next door is 'Gourmand' with great international beer and yummy tapas, around the corner are numerous cafes (our fave being Cafe Brujula's Darth Roasted), and it's 2 blocks from Santa Domingo which is where all the fun happens during the weekends and all festive times (i.e., Easter, the city's anniversary, etc). Make sure to be there around 6:30pm on a Saturday which is usually when a wedding calenda (parade) starts and heads down Alcala street. THAT is a treat!
My husband and I loved our stay and we believe the apartment played a huge part of it. We were sad to go and would rent it again the next time we go.
We enjoyed a great month at Jose's house. The apartment is set up so that you can be completely on your own or you can go upstairs and enjoy the lovely terrace and hanging out with other guests.
Jose is a tremendous host who wants to show off the wonderful city of Oaxaca. Over the month, he helped our Spanish improve greatly along with our Mexican cooking.
The apartment is in a great and central location - which also means some noise. The apartment itself is basic but complete with good internet, a full bathroom, and a small kitchen (including coffee maker!).
The apartment is located perfectly in Oaxaca. Everything you need is walking distance from the house. The rooftop is great for hanging out in the sun and admire beautiful Oaxacan sunsets!
The rooms and apartments are very clean. It does get a little noisy at night, especially during the weekends, but nothing too unbearable.
Jose gives great suggestions, directions and knows Mezcal (local liquor) very well! He can take you to the Mezcal factory where you will get a great tour! If you like to drink, this is definitely the place for you!
Jose was great, always there to help and suggest things to do. The apartment is located in the middle of the town, so it is very convenient to access any services. We particularly enjoyed using the rooftop terrace. Apartment is in the basement, so not much natural light, and we could hear music from the next door gym during its operating hours. Kitchen was well equipped, internet was fast and warm water always available.
José was a great host and was always available to answer any questions I had. The apartment was wonderful and made my long stay in Oaxaca a very pleasant experience. You couldn't ask for a better location - just a few steps away from the Santo Domingo cathedral, a quick walk to the Zocalo and grocery stores, and plenty of great bars and restaurants nearby.
