Nice big room with a desk and fast internet, free car parking right in front of the door, bus stop around the corner and a free bike to borrow! Perfect base to explore Leiden and the cities nearby, like Amsterdam, The Hague etc.
In a family house nearby the center of Leiden, I offer up to 2 comfortable and bright 2 person bedrooms for up to 4 guests.
The house has 3 floors; your private room is on the third floor. The room is bright and spacious and has one queen size bed, a desk and a wardrobe. Bath- and bed linen is included.
There is a second room for up to 2 more people in your party. It is the green room in the pictures. Also this room has comfortable bed, a desk and a wardrobe.
The bathroom on the second floor and the extra toilet on the first/ground floor are to be shared with the host (me, 1 person).
Apart from your room and the shared bathroom, you'll have free use of the entire kitchen, including all appliances, and the stuff you need to make yourself a nice dinner, like oil, salt, spices, rosemary from the garden, as well of the living areas on the ground floor. And of course of the garden and BBQ (weather permitting).
Upon arrival, you'll get the access codes for the free high-speed WiFi. The top room also has cabled internet, which reaches speeds up to 150 mbit/s.
Interaction with Guests
I live in the house and I love to chat with the guests and hear your stories.
You'll certainly see me when I show you around in the house upon arrival, but after that it's mostly up to you. You can hide away in your room all evening or sit in front of the fireplace in the living room.
On weekdays (and some weekends) I work in the academic hospital of Leiden, so during the day I'll be away.
The house is located in a very quiet street. There's no through-traffic here, just the neighbors. Nice and relaxed.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner are not standard included in your stay, but there are two small supermarkets as well as a bakery, a pizzeria, a shop specialized in cheeses, an authentic fish stand and a Greek trattoria within 2 minutes walking distance of the house. Plus a butcher, just a little further down the road.
Since you are in the Netherlands, it's only natural that bikes can be arranged. You can borrow two of mine, and if you come with your own bike(s), we can 'park' them in the shed in the garden at night. That way they are safe and dry.
In case you arrive by car, you can park free of charge, right in front of the house. The house is just far enough outside the old part of the city center, so parking is very easy.
And should you decide on public transportation in stead: there is a bus-stop 2 minutes walking away, which brings you straight to the Central Train Station of Leiden within about 5 minutes.
The house is situated:
-5 min by bike or bus from Leiden Central Station
-10 min by bike or bus from the city center
-20 min walk to the city/train station
-2 min walk from 2 supermarkets
From Leiden Central Station you can reach:
-Schiphol Airport in 15 min (by train)
-Amsterdam in 30 min (by train)
-Den Haag in 15 min (by train)
-Rotterdam in 30 min (by train)
-Keukenhof in 25 min (by bus)
-the beach in 20 min (by bike or bus)
Other Things to Note
We have one super-sweet indoor cat; a European shorthair called Aip. He used to have 2 companions (2 Sacred Birmans), but they recently immigrated to the US. I usually keep Aip out of the top room, but if you want to let him in, that's totally up to you. However, no cats are allowed in the green room; that one is officially cat(hair) free :)
Be nice and clean and friendly with the cat and you are going to have a perfect stay.
Also, smoking isn't allowed anywhere in the house, also not while 'leaning out of a window". But don't worry, we have a big garden, so if you really need to, there's ample space outside.
I spent a week in Maarten's house. He is the best host I ever met. He has been very kind and friendly. The house was clean, the room I occupied was large, clean and furnished with all I need. He let me use his bike, and we went together to the beach nearby. When I arrived he cooked dinner, very nice, and I really enjoyed my staying. We had fun together, had some cultural exchange italian-dutch. He really helped me to settle in Leiden showing me around the city, the most famous places, and he always pointed me the way when I had to get somewhere. Thank you Maarten!!
I stayed for 4 weeks in Maarten`s house and I really enjoyed the time! It`s a very nice and clean house with a wonderful garden and a funny cat. I also loved the location: You can reach the centrum by bike in less than 10 minutes and it`s in a very safe area. Maarten is a very nice and funny guy and I settled down in the Koraalstraat 19 very quikly. It was a perfect and nice opportunity getting to know the dutch culture and I recommend it to everybody.
we spent 4 days and now we already missing him and his cat. Maarten is the best host we have ever met. he is really nice and funny. when we gonna leave leiden and heading to the train station, he even woke up earlier for driving us to there. we always have nice chatting with him. he helped us a lot and his cat is really funny and cute. his house is ridiculously gorgeous. they have a very pretty garden and very clean , tidy room and so does the toilet. we highly recommended to everyone and we will stay here again if we come to netherland again.
We had an awesome stay in Maarten's lovely bright home. He was a communicative, polite and humorous host, that not only made our stay very comfortable but also helped a lot with finding our way around Leiden.
The house is located in a quiet and green neighborhood, and has all one can need for a weekend (and longer, too). The room itself was very tidy and neat, exactly as shown in the photos. We slept great. Another great feature were the adventurous Holland bikes, that were perfect for exploring town and getting to the beach. Adding the coolest cat Ape - we couldn't have had a better place to stay in Leiden!
Three days of absolute fun with Maarten! He is a friendly dutch guy with a spacious and well furnished house. I was in Leiden for visiting a Professor at Leiden University, which is close by (at least the Kamerlingh Onnes-Huygens
Laboratory). I had the chance to enjoy a nice late-spring evening and have a bbq with him in his well-mantained garden full of plants and flowers. If you go to Leiden, don't be stupid and book Maarten's rooms !!!!
I unfortunately had to cancel my booking with Maarten however my friend stayed there for 2 nights for a wedding and thoroughly enjoyed his stay. Although my friend was very late due to flight delays Maartin was very understanding and was also happy to get up late that night to let my friend into the house after the wedding party. Should I myself ever need to stay in Leiden I hope I can stay with Maarten
Maarten's room is very nice and clean. I stayed on the top floor and really enjoyed the view and the privacy. Everything was perfect. Maarten is a really cool guy and the perfect host! He was helpful with maps of Leiden and he let me borrow his bike. The location was great for me: outside the city center but still in walking distance to what I needed, and with the bike, absolutely great. I'd definitely stay there again!
I'm a 31 y/o male Dutch. I'm used to live in Leiden for 10 years and recently moved to Florida, USA. I worked as a PhD student (Neuroscience/Alzheimer's disease) at the Leiden University Medical Center and now work as a post-doc at the Mayo Clinic. I used to rent out a room in my house in Leiden and now co-host a small apartment with my sister-in-law in the north of Italy.
