What kind of an apartment are you looking for to stay in?
Do you wish to stay in El Centro (downtown) where it is exciting and noisy or in a quiet neighborhood? La Verbena in quiet and out of the way, yet you can be in the thick of it all any time you wish, with an inexpensive five or ten minute taxi ride.
Do you wish to stay in an historic place with character (read older, some things don't work) or in a brand new apartment like La Verbena?
Four walls can make you feel closed in sometimes. Do you need a little outside greenery? Fresh air? La Verbena has a large deck with table and chairs and a secure, private, grass yard. While you are out there, enjoy the breath-taking view of Cuenca. Or take in the spectacular night view from your bedroom window.
Are you planning to be in Cuenca in June through September? These are the cold months. Don't worry, there is never any snow or ice here, except in your drink. You will be warm enough walking about shopping or sight-seeing. And you will know that La Verbena has heated floors. Or you can sit out on the patio and watch the city lights come on.
La Verbena is in a friendly neighborhood with very pleasant neighbors. The condo is close to public transportation. There is access to many services like a shopping mall and the downtown area shops. Taxi rates range from US $2-$5.

Interaction with Guests
We meet you at the Cuenca airport and transfer you to our condo for free. You will have a local cell phone to use with our numbers. Call us for any problems or information.
The Spanish-speaking neighbors are friendly and quiet. A few blocks to a bus stop, small, local tiendas, and a shopping center about 1/4 mile away. Many guests walk downtown.
Two bus routes are within a three block walk.

Well, basically put, we had a great time at Warrens Condo. We came down to Cuenca to see if it might have a place in our future living arrangements. Warrens place offered a great base to search out the town. Up on the hill overlooking town we were away from the noise of the busy town, but it was easy enough to get to. We took the bus into town for the most part for .25 cents per person, the bus stop just a couple of blocks away. For quicker trips a cab is 2-3 dollars for most areas in town.
The condo is as advertised, a very comfortable place to stay. The kitchen is well set up and the beds, while very firm, were comfortable. The TV was nice for evenings, mostly Spanish programming, but some Engligh channels. I brought a Roku 3 which I was able to do Netflix and a couple of other channels with.
The best thing I liked was the patio area in the back. On the good mornings, I would sit at the table and have coffee and read my home paper on my computer while looking over Cuenca.
We had a couple of problems while we were there, but Warren was right on them. One was the Washer was broken when we arrived. While it was out for repair, Warren graciously offered to do the laundry for us.
When we first arrived off the Bus, Warren picked us up and took us to the Condo with a stop at the Supermaxi to get some food stocks for our stay.
Also Warren has his driver/ helper Manny available if you want to take tours around the area.
As mentioned in previous reviews, the condo is on a steep hill. Can be walked down to the Supermaxi, but back up would be quite the cardio workout. Another store, Coral, is a couple of mile to the north and can be reached by bus both ways.
I would have to say that we were never worried about our safety. The units have a locked gate then a locked door to get through before getting into the units. I never felt threatened in the neighborhood walking around as well.
Warren has a great book with tips on the area, and restaurant reviews that were quite handy.
Once again, I do recommend the condo for extended stays if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city life in Cuenca.
Warren's condo does have one of the best views in Cuenca. The apartment was modern and clean. Warren met us at the airport and transported us to the apartment with no additional charge. He even gave us fresh flowers for a vase on the dining room table. He also had a cleaning woman come over mid stay who did a clean up.
He provided us with a very good guide book to the city and a local cell phone for our use, also free of charge.
Warren really went the extra mile. Moreso than any host we've had to date. He came to pick us up when we arrived in town, Showed us where the nearby grocery stores were (and even offered to let us go grocery shopping), provided us with a local prepaid cell phone to use, and gave us some fresh roasted local coffee. Sometimes getting into town can be stressful. Warren made it incredibly easy.
Warren has also put together an informational booklet that answers tons of questions you may have about the surrounding area including restaurants, contact information for english speaking drivers if needed or taxi numbers if not.
There was plenty of room for the 4 of us that stayed. There is a dedicated internet connection that's as good as it gets in Cuenca. The in apartment laundry services aren't some cheap hand me down junk, but top of the line models. Great full size fridge, plenty of dishes and quality cookware. And as said in the description, an excellent view off of the patio. There's a great TV and DVD player with a huge number of satellite channels, but we never ended up watching any of them.

Compared to another stay we had in Centro, this was a much quieter laid back neighborhood. It's at the top of a hill, so it's a great view. Most people will require a car, or inexpensive taxi ride into town as it's a bit of a long walk. If you want to be in a quieter area with occasional visits to the city center this is great. At the base of the hill is a large grocery store as well.
The apartement complex has a secure entry gate, a lockable complex door as well as a different lock for the apartment itself. Security is great, but in general Cuenca is a very safe place. We were never worried about safety. In this quiet neighborood we never felt worried.
My spanish wasn't great, so calling a taxi didn't always work out, or there weren't any available because of the holidays. We were able to flag them down easily even on Christmas Eve, Christmas day, and New Years a very short walk away at the intersection of Emilio Lopez Ortega and Avenue Abelardo J. Andrade. Taxis are metered and depending on traffic costs to town were $1.50 to $2.75 (very heavy traffic).
The area is very nice and the unit is very nice as well and it had all the amenities of home. The view is as good as advertised. The weekly house cleaning was great. The property management was good. The TV didn't work for the 2 months we were there and the grass was never cut. It's not too far from the city center just a $3 taxi ride but the hill is a tough trek up if you're walking.
This was our 2nd time staying in this apartment. Warren (the host) was very kind and picked us up at the airport. He makes sure you have everything you need and leaves a book in the apartment that pretty much answers any questions you might possibly have. He provided a loaner cell phone which is a huge help. The apartment is clean, has plenty of space, and is in a lovely quiet neighborhood. And it really is the best view of Cuenca!
The kitchen is well equipped so you can prepare your own meals, there's a washer and dryer which make it so nice for a long stay. There was always wonderful hot water for the showers. The apartment is very secure and safe, so you don't have to worry about leaving valuables while you're out for the day.
It's a wonderful place and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Cuenca. My husband and I plan to return again soon, and have every intention of staying in the same apartment.
I stayed at Warren's condo for 5 weeks. While the weather didn't really cooperate in terms of using the patio, having a green space to look at was a nice break from the concrete of the city. And the night time views of the city lights were spectacular.
The apartment is roomy and well equipped (there is no hair dryer though so bring your own). The wifi was speedy and reliable. The bed in the master was super comfortable and the linens and towels were a good quality.
As for some of the noise mentioned in other reviews, the neighbor's dogs really only barked when people were coming and going in the morning and evening and didn't bother me. The roosters were the bigger issue so if you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs.
There are 2 buses that can get you to the heart of old town. The #20 is the quickest with a 20-minute ride. The stop is about 3 blocks from the apartment and there are also a few bodegas near the bus stop. I regularly walked into town and it took about 40 minutes.
The SuperMaxi grocery store is in a small mall, which is convenient if you've forgotten anything from home. There are also 2 ATM machines at the mall. The shopping center is at the bottom of a really steep hill so if you do a big shop you'll want to take a taxi back to the apartment. Grocery store clerks can help you flag a taxi and get your bags in the car.
I had a great time staying at the apartment. Warren and Manny were very accommodating and helpful with suggestions.
Warren's place is clean and modern with a great view of the city. The internet is good and all the necessities that you need are available. It is a quick walk down a hill to Supermaxi, a major supermarket where taxi's are readily available.
I would definitely recommend this place.
