Los Masos (the farms) is a small commune made up of a few hamlets. This property is in the hamlet of Llonat and is a peaceful, typical village of the region with the local church just around the corner. It also benefits from having a small café and grocery store so it is possible to just relax and forget about the car for a few days if you wish.
The nearest main town, just a few kilometers away, is Prades. A thriving market town, Prades has many great shops and restaurants as well as a lively market on both Tuesday and Saturday mornings, where you can buy local produce such as the peaches and cherries that are grown in abundance here, fresh vegetables, wonderful cheeses…. and of course the excellent wine!
There are events and festivals throughout the year. Spanish cellist Pablo Casals fled to Prades during the Spanish civil war, stayed and established the festival that now bears his name. The Catalan summer school takes over the town for two weeks in August, and there is dancing in the square every night during this period.
Places of Interest: For touring the area, Los Masos offers an excellent base. Just a few of the sites of interest within easy driving distance are listed below:
* Villefranche de Conflent, a fine example of a medieval walled town, visit Fort Liberia perched high above the town.
* Little Yellow Train, catch this train from Villefranche and enjoy the specatular mountain views right into the Pyrenees.
* Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent renowned caves with an incredible light and sound show.
* St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched impressively high on the hillside with fantastic scenery and walks.
* St Michel de Cuxa, 6th century abbey that hosts concerts during the Pablo Casals festival but is also open for viewing most of the year.
* St Thomas les Bains, outstanding natural thermal hot springs in wonderful outdoor mountain setting.
* Animal Park, Casteil, lovely day out for the children, lots of animals to see and feed, in a beautiful mountain park, the walk around the park is 2-3 km, bring a picnic.
* Perpignan, the capital of the region, has many historical buildings, art galleries, shops and restaurants. Thursday nights in Perpignan in the summer are festival evenings - not to be missed.
* Skiing in winter - we are 45 minutes from the slopes of the Pyrenees ski resorts.
* Aqualand - amazing waterpark in St Cyprien with many great slides and water attractions for all the family.
* Marquixanes - Tree top adventure park with cargo nets and zip wires over the river, tubing and picnic area.
We would say a car is essential unless you are on a walking or cycling holiday. Public transport in the area, trains and buses, to Prades are subsidised and all journeys are only 1 euro!!
Other Things to Note
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Languedoc-Roussillon is perfectly positioned between the Mediterranean to the east where the beautiful sandy beaches provide long days by the sea, and the Pyrenees to the west, which offer a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities, not to mention skiing in the winter!
This region is a delight; the Conflent valley provides lush green scenery, with Mount Canigou dominating the skyline and the Pyrenees visible in the distance. You can be swimming in the sea in the morning, and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon. There are even thermal hot springs, so if you would like to combine the two activities we can suggest a hike AND a swim in the mountains! It really does offer you everything!
There is a lake in the local town of Vinca, with beaches, from which you can swim, sail or wind-surf, or you could just visit the popular open air swimming pools in Prades and Vernet-les-Bains.
Weather: We benefit from being in the sunniest region of France, and enjoy warm, sunny weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months (45 minute drive to the ski resorts).
Smoking is not allowed inside the house. Some pets, please ask.
We ask guests to leave the house in a good clean condition on their departure and to advise us of any breakages as they happen. Please let us know if you feel anything requires repair or replacement.
The house was absolutely lovely and in a peaceful, beautiful location.
It was exactly what we needed to get away from the busy city for a long weekend but there were so many fantastic things to do within a 15 minute car journey. Our highlights include the lovely town of Villefranche en Conflent, my walk up to the Abbey of St Martin de Canigou and the refreshing Spa baths at St Thomas les bains.
The house itself has everything you could need and the highlight for us was definitely waking up to the amazing view from the bedroom. Would highly recommend.
The house was well equipped, very private in a good condition. The roof-terrace was extremely nice with a beautiful panorama to Pic Canigou the highest mountain of the region. Los Masos is close to the main road towards Andorra but still very quite, there are wonderful cultural and natural sights close to the house. We enjoyed our stay very much.
Julie has a beautiful, historic farm house in a quaint little village in the Pyrenees. We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing week at her house - the roof deck has beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, and the house is clean and well-equipped.

Very happily married with 4 children and 4 grand children. Spare time is mostly taken up with renovating our derelict house (the apartment is the first part to be finished and we are very proud of how successful it is). Favourite pass-times, eating, drinking and relaxing.
Looking forward to having people stay in our apartment, this has been our "baby" for the last 2 years and we hope you will love it as much as we do.
