The beautifully restored Merchant’s House is located in the heritage village of Old Perithia in Corfu. It offers romantic-style accommodation with free wi-fi and views to Mount Pantokrator, the countryside and the village.
Dream 2010: Northeast Corfu, 8km up from the coast, just beneath Mount Pantokrator.
Take an 'abandoned village' (Corfu’s oldest), set amidst beautiful countryside. Buy 3 old traditional fallen down houses. Restore them exactly as they were c.1650, as it's a heritage protected site. Turn them into 6 individual boutique bed & breakfast suites, each one designed with hand-made furniture, lavish furnishings, antiques and paintings, comfy beds, power showers, Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, Nespresso machines and all the techy stuff that's required.
Reality 2012: Dream come true! Now open as The Merchant's House Boutique B&B in Old Perithia.
The property has 6 individual luxury suites, each sleeping 2 adults. All of the suites have their own separate entrance and consist of a sitting room (with 1-2 sofabeds), double bedroom and bathroom with walk-in shower.
In a Nutshell: This privately owned and managed accommodation is considered to be one of the finest restorations on the island. Awarded a category 'A' four star rating, The Merchant's House brings together the homeliness of a B&B and the luxury and service of a four star hotel. It is the only accommodation in this heritage protected village, with 5 tavernas! As the restorations continue, this historic village is gradually coming back to life. Breakfast is included on the terrace of the taverna adjacent to the B&B.
Quick facts: You need a car. There's no swimming pool but some of the best beaches are within 20 minutes drive. Shops within 15 minutes drive. It's an hour and a quarter from the airport. 410m up the highest mountain on the island.
Ideal for: Couples, walkers, honeymooners, people escaping from the paparazzi or the crowds by the beach, people who need to de-stress, photographers, Durrell fans and alike.
What to Expect: Each of the three traditional houses have been faithfully restored into 6 individual suites, rebuilt entirely by hand by local craftsmen. The suites, each with their own private entrance, sit side by side with a small path at the rear, a garden in front, and stone steps leading to a cobbled road winding down to the village square. There are beautiful views across the countryside up to the highest mountains on the island and down to the Ionian Sea below. Historic documents show that the village of Old Perithia (Paleá Períthia) and its ancient churches date back to the 14th century.
'New Tradition': Reflecting the Venetian, French and British influences on the island, the suites blend centuries of tradition with a contemporary standard of comfort and decoration.
