Carved timber doors featuring Alice on her throne greet you at the entrance to this sweet cottage. Set in its own walled garden, the entry and sunroom leads to a compact circular step down kitchen, sitting room with high back throne chairs, and ladder stairs to the twin bed mezzanine level featuring protected premier box seat views to the antics of the monkeys; ideal accommodation for a small family, an intimite group of friends or ideal for couples or singles looking for a very romantic holiday escape.
The lower level master suite with its comfortable seating nook and large king size bed is an escapist fantasy and one exit to the outdoor bathroom with its separate shower and super sized terrazzo bath is by way of a charming courtyard and stone carved water feature. At the rear of the property is a gateway to the shared swimming pool and easy access to the Coffee and Copper restaurant and bar.
As the sun sets on your idyllic surrounds and the monkeys take early retirement to slumber in the trees, you are left to revel in this quiet sanctuary or partake in the many experiences at your doorstep. Some of the islands best dance performances are only meters away, let alone a myriad of fantastic restaurants including the famous Laka Leke which combines both great food and dance performances nightly. Room service to Looking Glass House is provided by Coffee & Copper should you require breakfast in bed or a late night snack. *Bookings less than 4 nights and more than 30 days in advance, will be upon request. Some months especially in high season may have one week minimums applied, but please make your enquiry and we will do our best to accomodate you.
*Please note, when booking for only 2 people our quoted prices assume two people are happy to share the king size bed in the mater suite. If when booking for two people only, you wish to use both the king size bed and the king single on the mezzanine, please enquire about the small additional charge per night for laundering and servicing for the two areas.
*"Internet in Bali" Please note that although Looking Glass House is equipped with very fast internet connection by the best available means, this is still a tropical island and although generally good our signal is vulnerable to the service provided by Telecom Indonesia and as with every other connection in Bali, there are a few rare times when it has not been at its best. In such instances we always seek to have the problem rectified expediently but please keep in mind, we are at the mercy of Telecom Indonesia, and cannot entertain any claims against us for the service they provide. That being said to date we have had very few problems with internet in our location.

This is a magical place with a mysterious Alice and Wonderland theme. My 2 year old daughter and the 2 year old that lives in my wife and I loved the monkeys coming into the yard and right up to the windows, and the location with the Monkey Forest just outside the front gate was wonderful. We were a bit worried about mosquitos being so close to a forest, but it wasn't a problem at all. The pictures are accurate, but it's hard to see how truly big the bed and bath are until you're there in person. They are both very spacious. There were two young guys who looked after the place, who were very friendly and cleaned the place daily, and rented us a cheap scooter. Got to meet Desak on our last day and she was great. Really enjoyed chatting with her. Will definitely stay here again.
Thank you Dan, we are so thrilled you loved our Looking Glass House, it is a special place indeed and we welcome you back any time. Just a note to other potential guests that if they are not at peace with the occasional monkey coming onto the grounds we have full time staff that generally are instructed to keep them out. In Dan's case him and his children were enjoying their presence so they let the odd one through. At Looking Glass House your wish is always our command....
We enjoyed our stay in the Looking Glass House. It's well located for quick access to central Ubud and we all enjoyed the walk each day through the Monkey Forest to get there (at night we always took a taxi home). My 3 year old son loved watching the monkeys through the big glass windows upstairs and even had some special moments when young monkeys approached the windows and touched hands with him through the glass. The house itself is well equipped and is cleaned/ serviced each day by two staff who arrive around 8am and stay until 6pm. The house is multi-level and there are steps going into each room, so it may be an problem for those with mobility issues, or very young children. The bath is huge and my son enjoyed "swimming" in it (although there is limited hot water, this wasn't much of an issue as a cool bath/ shower was welcomed!). We only used the swimming pool a couple of times, but enjoyed being able to access it when needed. The Coffee and Copper cafe next door (where breakfast is served) was delicious and convenient. We appreciated the support provided by Desak in arranging very reasonably priced airport pickups and in stopping by to check on how we were getting on in Ubud. Wayan (who cleans the house each day) was very lovely and always happy to help us out with information and tasks (such as dropping off/ collecting our washing). Overall, a very unique experience and recommended to those who are looking for something a bit different from the usual accommodation offered in Bali.
Sonja thank you so much for your lovely review and your appreciation of the fact that Looking Glass House is a very special place to stay. The house is does indeed have a charming configuration and we agree the mezzanine ladder stairs make the upper level best suited to children over 4, although the large downstairs suite is very accessible for all ages. We welcome you back any time and wanted to let you know that we have now installed a continuous hot water system so there should be plenty of hot water on demand even for that huge luxurious bathtub. Hope to see you again soon.
Our stay was great, we enjoyed this cute and stylish house, right next to the monkey forest. Desak was a very kind host and even though we didn't get to see her in person, we were allowed a late check out and the breakfast in the nearby cafe was delicious - loved the fried noodles.
If you stay here, you should definitely dine and the nearby restaurant - Laka Leke. It's very Balinese and you feel very local. We were there for dinner and got to experience the Cacak show - a must see.
Overall experience is goodish. Fully equipped kitchen (however eating at the adjacent restaurant was cheaper and easier). The architecture of the house is more european than asian. A few steps down to the kitchen. A few steps down to the room. My kids loved it.
Location is excellent. Adjacent to Monkey Forest Entrance. 5 to 7 mins walk to shops. Monkeys all over the place and some near / on the house after Agung / Adek (cleaner) goes off-duty. That is what the laser pointer / hand catapult is for !! It was quite cute to see them peering in through the glass window as we do our things in the house. Maybe now we know how animals feel like in the Zoo ! Ha ha ! Basic protocol, keep all things in a well gripped zipped bag and you'd be ok. There were attempts on my loosely held plastic bag. Pirates ahoy !
There are clean linens everyday. Wonderful after a good shower at the huge toilet (which has a big bath tub - largest i've seen). One of the biggest toilet i've been to. Entomologist would love it as the toilet connects fairly openly to the small garden.
According to my family, there was a wood smell in the bedroom which luckily has a fragrance dispenser which helps mask it. I could not smell anything.
Watch out for mosquitoes too. Luckily the house is fairly well-sealed from mosquitoes, and the air-cond helps a lot. Should consider connecting the electricity to 3-phase wiring then the supply would be more regular and all electrical appliances can be on during peak period (5 to 9pm?). Day time no problem. We'd love to have met Desak unfortunately sick (from dengue ?) but very responsive to emails and queries. Even asked the friends to help in while Desak was sick. Anyway, next time.
At our request, Desak kindly arranged the transport from Airport to the house (260k one way, takes 80mins - with Ketut). Luckily since Desak was sick, and Agung had kept the key next to the house (but we did not have the key to the garden). So Ketut went off to get the key for us. We sat next door at Copper and Coffee (highly recommended) for drinks while it got sorted out in about 15 minutes. Ketut also arranged motorbikes for us with helmets (adult and kids !) for 50k for 24 hours. Make sure you wear safety helmets as there are police stops at Ubud.
Overall quite happy with this house.
Dear William thank you so much for your recommendation. I am so glad you enjoyed the house. Yes monkeys are harmless but can be mischievous so our normal protocol is to have staff on to patrol grounds and make sure they do not enter, i am sorry during your stay one staff was off sick on short notice.but glad your kids loved the experience regardless... Glad you appreciated the big semi open bathroom and big bath.. (other guests note, I think William means bathroom when he is saying toilet, there is nice bathroom in the house). Re the wood smell in the room that is the smell of alang alang (the bali grass roofs) in the rain, which is something people like in Bali, , it is normal in the tropics, as are some mosquitoes outside in rainy season. But guests please note our house has electronic repellents and is sealed to keep them to an absolute minimum, there are more this time of year and we advise guests not to leave doors open for prolonged periods or you may get the odd one inside. I am sorry I was unwell and did not catch up with you this time. In summary thank you so much for your recommending us William and your detailed review. We welcome you and your family back any time. .. Desak
Looking Glass House is a lovely facility to stay, mostly due to the location, so close to all the shops, restaurants, etc.
The staff and especially Wayan at the Cafe are wonderful and became friends in no time!
The plumbing in the bathroom needs attention as we battled a few times to get hot water, flooded the bathroom floor , etc. But each time the staff did attend to the problem in no time.
Thanks for memorable stay!
Hey Lorraine thanks your positive review, we are glad you loved the house, staff and location as so many have before you. You will be pleased to note the bathrooms plumbing is fixed, so no more blocked drain (it was just a small problem due to a build up of guests hair blocking the shower, which has now been cleared). The plumber also serviced the hot water and says all is fine. We thank you for bringing it to our attention so we can ensure our future guests the best possible stay. as you notice we always attend to any service issues immediately.. Thank you for choosing Looking Glass House and we welcome you back any time.
We had a marvellous time in this accomodation. Location is very good, next to the monkey forest, on walking distance to the start of the busier parts of Ubud.
The house was kept clean daily, the bed was great, and the staff was very friendly. We did find the occasional gecko in the bathroom, which didn't bother us at all.
The house is connected to a small resort with private pool and bar/restaurant. Very nicely designed and maintained. The food in the restaurant is very nice as well.
We were very happy with our stay in the Looking Glass House. We liked the atmosphere/vibe that the appartment has; we had a very good time!
Robert thank you so much for your lovely review, we are very pleased you loved our house and yes the bed it is comfortable indeed... The staff also are happy that you appreciated their efforts and remarked on the house being kept clean.. We are also happy you loved the location and the food in the restaurant connected to us.. We welcome you back any time...
We had a great stay at looking glass house. Would recommend it to anyone, except if you have trouble with stairs. The staff were great and the restaurant next door excellent.
Thanks so much Lukas for a great review, we are glad you loved the property and your stay.. Just a note to any future guests, Lukas's comment about the stairs is referring to the ladder stair that goes up to the loft/mezzanine bedroom (see pics). The main master bedroom is on the first level and very accessible (no staircase). The house is also straight in on one level off the (website hidden) to be clear Lukas is just informing guests using the mezzanine that it is up a ladder style stair case.. All in all the house is very very accessible. Thanks Lukas hope to see you again soon..
We had a fun stay in Ubud and were well looked after by Desak. We are both city girls and it took us a little adjustment to our stay in Ubud i.e. the monkeys, frogs and gekos. But the house was just what we needed and it was clean and well kept. If we had any questions or needed anything we just messaged Desak and she answered straight away.
It is worth noting that you have to go through the monkey forest to get to the centre of Ubud so buying groceries needs some thought (take a rucksack to keep the monkeys from grabbing your shopping!) At night you follow the path around the edge of the forest and it is not a long walk but don't forget the torch.
Desak is lovely and organised a driver to meet us from the airport and even sorted out some hot food from the cafe next door. She is very keen to help and made sure we enjoyed our stay.
Thank you so much for your lovely review Lucy, we loved hosting you and are glad you adjusted to life on a tropical island in no time at all. Yes good advice to tell guests to keep groceries out of the sight of monkeys when walking through the forest of a day, but we also remind them that they sleep early about 6 pm after which you can safely stroll through groceries exposed without a monkey in site and yes we leave a torch for you at the villa. I am glad you appreciated my efforts, it was a pleasure to be of service to you and I welcome you back anytime..
I love the house and every detail part of it! The interior was superb, beautiful and neat The surrounding area also brings me closer to nature as I could say hello to the monkeys every morning, the sound of geckos at night, and bathing with the frog (which probably is my prince charming in disguise?!)
The staffs were very friendly and helpful as well
Thank you for the enchanting and blissful experience, Looking Glass House :)
