Stay in a beautiful penthouse duplex apartment on upper west side.
We are top floor on a 5 floor walk up. Located at top of UWS at W 108th and Columbus 2 blocks from Central Park West and two blocks from Morning side Park. Two blocks away is the 1 train (Red line - 1 (which connects to the 2 and 3 Express at 96th)-- located on Broadway which is lined with fresh markets, restaurants, bars, bakeries) and the other direction at 110 and Central Park West is the C (blue line) and B (gold) taking you into Times Square, grand central and the B all the way to Brooklyn.
On the block is a wonderful neighborhood cafe Zannys, a crepe restaurant across the street, Isola with patio seating in good weather, Tom Yum Thai, Lura's bar and restaurant, pizza places, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese and several little bar/restaurants and bodegas. There is a Whole Foods on 98th/Columbus and 3 other Groceries nearby.
This neighborhood is family oriented and more quiet than hustle bustle of midtown and even downtown. There is a middle school across the street and about half of the buildings in the neighborhood are Columbia housing for grad students and so forth. We are a short walk to Harlem and Morningside. This is the much gentrified west side of Harlem where the famous Frederick Douglas strip of eateries and such lies.
Amenities of the apartment:
Washer dryer inside the apartment.
Rooftop deck/garden with dining table (for good weather use).
1 of the 2 Penthouses on the floor.
Red Oak Wood floors throughout
High ceilings in all the bedrooms and most of the main area.
Chef kitchen with stainless steel appliances and spacious French door fridge.
Freshly custom painted
Netflix. HBO - that means you can watch Game of Thrones. Hip Hip Horray!
Bedroom has real closet the size of some apartments in Manhattan. Don't believe me - check out the village. Bed is pillow top mattress - a real bed not a futon, not a dorm room tiny twin, but Full sized bed with drawers for storage. two large windows that face west and have a great view. Ceilings are high and custom painted as well. High quality drapes, good linens, comforter, new fresh towels.
Very quiet neighborhood and apartment and love to keep it peaceful and zen here! :) There are many bars in the area however for when you'd like to venture out.
This is the second available room in the 3 bedroom apartment. For stays under one month, two people are welcome. Over that must be one person only.
House ie kitchen, bathrooms, living room, washer dryer and rooftop patio.
Interaction with Guests
I'm not home very much but when I am home I do interact with guests in a non over bearing manner :)
The wine shop across the street, it's where I buy all of my wine. The bodega across the street makes a banging Reuben. There are several cafes and a little restaurant wine bar that opened on 109 and columbus. Plus there's a Wholefoods ten blocks away surrounded by the usual Starbucks and other chains. The small family owned spots surround 106-110 and also in the 70's and 80's strip on Columbus and Amsterdam. Pleasant short walk and tons of brunch spots + cafes.
Central Park entrance is 2 blocks away. This is our favorite part of the neighborhood and can't be beat really. There are so many things to do in CP that a website exists for it. :)
I am in between two major transit lines the C/B (blue and yellow line) and the 1 train (red line) both run up and down the west side of manhattan and the B goes all the way to brooklyn. The metro stations are two blocks away.
Other Things to Note
*Myself and another flatmate live here. This is our home, not a furnished full time rental. If you are looking for hotel accommodations there are several in the area that can provide this. We say this so people coming to stay understand that we live here, we are not in the hotel business, we are not a company. I provide maps and you will receive plenty of local tips on things to do.
For stays over one month i.e. long term stays, we are all responsible for maintaining and keeping a clean and stocked house. Thank-you.
No Smoking of anything inside the house. There is a rooftop deck if you smoke however. Also no drugs of any kind.
*TV use - since this is a share and not private residence booking please be considerate when watching TV/ NO late night tv watching LOUD and during the week, it is disrespectful to those in the apt trying to sleep and the neighbors. Thx!
No loud music and very clean and respectful please. Please clean up after oneself - also **we have a hair catcher in the bathtub - please use this catcher in every shower and clean it after each use so that we can all enjoy a clean clogged free shower. thx!
If any smoking happens inside there is a $500 fee for smoking inside.
Julianna and her roommate were very delightful. We crossed paths a few times but mostly we were out and about. The place is nice but there are a few cons that would lead me not to come back.
Pros: great hosts! Nice safe location. Close to Central Park. Air conditioning in room.
Cons: No elevator and the room is on the 4th floor. The stairs are steep. After walking all day in NY you have to come home to 4 flights of stairs. The room is tiny, I stayed with my husband and it was very tight. The shower/bath is upstairs and you share it with the hosts. The shower head takes 5 minutes to get hot water. Staying here feels like spending the night at a friends house rather than feeling like renting a room.
Overall it is nice but I will look for something different in the future
Hey guys thanks! Just FYI though: We do list all of these things very clearly about the apt -re: the stairs/walk up and that there is 1.5 bath in the house so that everyone is aware of this beforehand. I don't know how that came as a surprise.
I'm sorry you weren't aware or didn't see that in the listing. Perhaps on future visits to nyc I might suggest you rent a studio apartment so that you have the place to yourself, it might be something that better suits your needs, the cost will be higher but it would be a better fit.
As home sharing/renting a room means sharing the common (website hidden) - sorry you weren't aware about the shower if you turn it all the way to hot it gets hotter faster and then you just turn it down to desired temp!
All the best!
You have to be prepare to climb up the stairs to the fifth floor after all the walking in New York. Plus the full bathroom is in in the second floor. The bathroom has plumbing problems and needs attention, had some mold and it was bit dirty. The bethroom is not as clean as it looks in the pictures (not recommended if you suffer from allergies). However, Js personality is very sweet!
We do list on the site and on the booking that we are in a walk up and we are on the top floor. I'm sorry that came as a surprise.
However, the plumbing works just fine. Both myself and the other guest here showed you how to use it and you said "I'm not good with these things." We did our (website hidden) your statement about the bathroom and pictures - we are now posting close up photos of the bathroom on the site. We're pretty confident it looks just the same but thanks for making the comparison.
Even though we tried to make you feel at home, ie wine cronuts help with directions and maps, I felt you were uncomfortable from the beginning. At one point you asked us if your belongings would be safe. Inside of our house. Often we felt insulted and were not sure of the proper response. I do apologize but both myself and even the other airbnb guest were at a loss as to how to make you feel welcome. It just didn't seem possible.
Jianna is super friendly and has great suggestions for places in the area. The place is great- very roomy for NY with a patio upstairs and a large kitchen. Highly recommended! :)
We had such a nice time in New York and in Jianna's appartment! It was great located so we could reach everything within short time! The room was enough for two people and clean! Every question we had before the trip was answered quickly!! Thanks again for hosting us and we can only recommend this place!
Jianna and Alex were great hosts, they were very nice and hospitable. Even though we were mostly enjoying the location in NYC, we had a few good talks. Jianna is always open to give you tips about things you must do in the city. The house is very peaceful and it feels like you are at home very quickly. When you step outside it’s a quiet neighborhood, so you’re away from the busy city. You’re back at the city center really soon by subway! Our room was clean and had a comfortable bed. I would recommend this room to a young couple/person, it gives you the whole New York experience to ‘live’ in New York with a roommate for a while. Also the 4 stairs give you a good exercise every day!
