The Rancho is the guest house on our property where we live full time in Atenas, Costa Rica. It is down the hill from our house and is a very tropical-style wooden building that was constructed by the previous owners and made of some beautiful tropical hardwoods. It has a central living/dining area, a 2nd floor bedroom w/double bed, a small kitchenette with mini-fridge, a microwave oven, a sink (carved from one long piece of wood) and a very unique bathroom: 20 ft. long, stone walls and floor, wood structure; the walls are black lava rock from Arenal Volcano, the floors smooth flagstone, there is a stone shower stall, and a bathtub carved out of one tree trunk. And toilet; modern plumbing fixtures throughout.
And the whole thing is built out over our little man-made lake, full of fish, turtles and fishing birds. The property is a birders paradise. We have 4 acres (16,000 sq.m.) with many fruit trees.. There is a quebrada (creek) that runs all down the side of the property and in the rainy season really rushes. We are surrounded on three sides by coffee farms. This is the real Costa Rica. And this is the perfect tropical getaway for a weekend, or an interlude in between beaches, tropical forests and other activities.
The property is in the neighborhood of Alto Lopez, in Barrio San Jose Sur de Atenas, just 4 km or 10 minutes from Atenas centro. The neighborhood is very safe - everyone knows everyone else, and our property is totally secure.
We are one hour from the central Pacific beach towns of Jaco and Puntarenas, 30 minutes from San Jose airport and 40 minutes from the capital San Jose.
Jean and Al were ideal hosts, and they have created a magical getaway in Costa Rica on their dream property. Between the house's prime location on a lily-filled lake to the kindness of Al and Jean, this getaway is a must for those who want an inspired, beautiful space and love being connected to nature's rhythm.
