The Rancho is the guest house on our property where we live full time in Atenas, Costa Rica. It is a very tropical-style building constructed by the previous owners of beautiful tropical hardwoods. It has a central living/dining area, a 2nd floor bedroom w/double bed, a small kitchenette with mini-fridge, a microwave oven, a sink carved from one long piece of wood. The bathroom is unique: 20 ft. long, stone walls and floor, wood structure; the walls are black lava rock from Arenal Volcano, the floors smooth flagstone, there is a stone shower stall, and a bathtub carved out of one tree trunk. A toilet, of course; modern plumbing fixtures throughout.
It is built out over our little man-made lake. The property is a birders paradise. We have 4 acres (16,000 sq.m.) with many fruit trees, are surrounded on three sides by coffee farms. This is the real Costa Rica. And this is the perfect tropical getaway for a weekend, or an interlude in between beaches, tropical forests and other activities.
The property is in the neighborhood of Alto Lopez, in Barrio San Jose Sur de Atenas, just 4 km or 10 minutes from Atenas centro. The neighborhood is very safe - everyone knows everyone else, and our property is totally secure. NOT a gated community!
We are one hour from the central Pacific beach towns of Jaco and Puntarenas, 1.5 hours from Manuel Antonio National Park, 2 hours to Monte Verde Cloud Forest and 30 minutes from San Jose airport.
The entire Rancho building, plus the garden next to it and the lake in front of it. Also, guests are welcome to stroll around the 16,000sq.m. property, which is like a tropical park full of fruit trees, and gardens including orchids.
Interaction with Guests
If you need us, we are there!! Otherwise, we prefer to leave guests alone.
Its real Costa Ricans (Tico's/Tica's.) Friendly and honest, the Ticos's consistently come out No. 1 on the World Happiness Quotient. To be expected from a county who's slogan is "pura vida" - pure life.
There is good, very reliable and very cheap public transit throughout Costa Rica - mostly buses. About 250 m. from our front gate a bus will take you into the town of Atenas, where you can catch a bus to anywhere in the country.
And roads for cars almost everywhere, although in the rainy season some may need 4W drive.
Be respectful of the unique building and get to see what living in Costa Rica is like.
This place was wonderful. Really clean and in a great location. Such a different and cool experience! Jean and her husband were as sweet as can be!
Jean was a wonderful host, and the treehouse is really a unique and interesting. The grounds are really beautiful, and the treehouse is impeccably maintained and gives you a true one-with-nature experience. Unfortunately for us, an unforeseen issue back home caused us to cut our visit short, but we recommend this property if you are looking for a truly unique Costa Rican experience! Thank you again Jean for your hospitality.
Lovely stay at The Ranch. The property was absolutely stunning with a large tangerine tree in the back yard to accompany the local coffee Jean left us in the kitchen from the coffee farm next door. Perfect place if you are looking to enjoy a few peaceful nights in a tranquil scene with the sounds of nature and serenity of your thoughts and seclusion. Lovely hosts and property. Will definitely come again when I visit costa rica again someday.
Just returning from a 12 day trip exploring Costa Rica. For the first 2 nights of my trip, I (along with my boyfriend) stayed with Jean and Al in their guesthouse, The Rancho. In a lovely little neighbourhood, just 5-10 minutes drive from downtown Atenas, The Rancho is settled on Jean and Al's stunning 4 acre property. The Rancho was clean and had its own rustic flare. Jean and Al were more than accommodating, inviting us to freely explore their gorgeous property. They have a beautiful observatory deck on the highest point of their land where you can overlook the valley. Staying in this guesthouse, we were immersed into the Costa Rican natural environment. For nature lovers, Jean and Al's guesthouse is highly recommended!
There is a restaurant within walking distance that had all your typical Costa Rican dishes. We ate here twice, and both times were very good! Jean and Al were gracious in providing us with granola and bagels, as well as fresh organic fruit picked from their property. I would recommend these accommodations to any family and/or friends that were planning to travel Costa Rica.
This was the second time my sister and I stayed in this lovely airbnb residence and the experience was just as pleasant as the previous time (if not more!). Jean and Al are absolutely wonderful hosts and are so incredibly accommodating to the needs of their guests. The bungalow allows you to experience the nature of Costa Rica, and gives you a real taste of the beautiful country. The property is just a $5 taxi ride from the center of downtown Attenas, or a 5 minute walk to the nearest resteraunt. However, once you step onto the property you will not want to leave! I would absolutely reccomend staying at this residence if you are lucky enough to get the chance.
We stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our Costa Rican honeymoon trip, and our first AirBnB stay too! It's was awesome! The grounds that the bungalow are on are BEAUTIFUL. Jean said she's a retired landscape architect and you can tell - It's gorgeous. The bungalow itself is super neat - you won't find anywhere else that's as cool as this place! Al & Jean were awesome hosts and surprised us with leaving us some breakfast foods and fresh fruit (some of which came from their own organic fruit trees!) in the bungalow upon arrival, which was so sweet. The bungalow is a pretty open space, so don't be surprised to see a bird dart in and out, but that lends itself to a really unique Costa Rica experience! Our hosts were wonderful - they even met us in town to help us find our way there on our first trip in, and if we ever needed anything they were right there! Would definitely recommend!
I am an American living in Costa Rica, originally from NYC. My husband of 30 years and I retired here in 2006. He is an artist - painter. I'm a landscape architect, retired. I'm my only client now and I love it.
