Interaction with Guests
I usually meet with guests upon arrival to show them to the unit and answer any questions. After that, we try to stay out of sight as much as possible, but I am available to answer questions or help with any problems guests might have.
There are buses and cabs, but they are not practical for the typical guest. In almost all cases, a rental car is necessary.
No smoking, no shoes, no pets.

This large vacation rental home exceeded the expectations of our group of 7. We all agreed that the location, amenities, attention to detail, and over ambiance of the property was superb. The photos on the website only hint at the beauty of this home. My first comment on arrival and seeing the first apartment was " Wow this is way better than the pictures!"
The property is beautifully landscaped with some very unique tropical plants and flowers. The outside cooking, barbeque area makes for a wonderful evening dining experience.
We rented all four apartment units. This unique arrangement allows for the privacy of each couple when needed. The lap pool was very popular for exercise as well as a refreshing dip to cool off. The house is very close to the ocean, and the sound of the waves are clearly heard. The 30' lava cliffs at the shoreline make for dramatic scenery photography. It is just a short walk from the pool to the ocean's edge. A foot path goes along the top of the cliff and there are benches to sit on for sunrise and sunset views. The second floor of the house also has stunning views of the ocean, pool and zen garden.
The rooms themselves are furnished with authentic Hawaiian furniture made of native hardwoods. The wall decorations are elegant, but not overdone. Orchid plants are in every room, some of which were quite large and beautiful. The whole place was spotlessly clean and very new.
This part of the Big Island is not really for about beaches, but about volcanoes, lush vegetation, dramatic scenery, and friendly people. The town of Hilo (sixteen miles) is one of the few authentic cities in the state of Hawaii.
Lastly, our host, Dan, was just what you wanted a host to be. Helpful and friendly at check-in, invisible unless you needed something.
If your desire is to really see this part of the island as more than just a tourist, then, by all means, stay at Dan's. We are all from the island of Maui, so we know the real Hawaii when we see it.
By the way, if you can at all afford it, do a helicopter tour over the lava fields. You will be amazed! We actually felt the heat of the lava and saw the glowing, hot rock oozing from the ground. Go early in the morning or twilight to really see the red glow.
Dan's house was immaculately presented and very well organised. We ended up renting both the upstairs and downstairs units - they are almost identical but the downstairs has the advantage of quick access to the pool area. We had a very comfortable stay and felt very at home and relaxed.
Dan met us on arrival and walked over the various do's, don'ts and how to's of the property and then left us to it. Dan and his wife stayed in a separate unit at the end of the property. They were very discreet and we hardly knew they were there. We found the beds comfortable and enjoyed watching a few movies together on Netflix in the evening. We'd certainly recommend this as a good place to base from if you want to explore this end of the island - the volcanoes, lava flows and scenic routes were stunning - it's about 20mins drive to the nearest store or restaurant
Thanks Dan and Sumiko for providing such a great venue for the last days of our family vacation on Hawaii's Big Island !
This was a return trip to Dan's rental property. Our host Dan and Sumiko were very helpful with local information. We had great time at the house. Great location, great house, great host. We highly recommended for anyone who is looking for a relaxing place
I and my entire family had a fabulous time at Dan's beautiful place. We occupied both units and took full advantage of the private pool and hot tub, as well as the outside cooking area. The property itself, as well as the accommodations, were exquisite: beautifully designed and spotlessly clean. The cats were super friendly too!
We hope to be back in the Hilo area someday, and you can be sure that we'll be back at Dan's when we are!
Dan made us feel very welcome and showed us around the home when we arrived.
This place was amazing - entirely accurate as per the photos and Dan made us feel incredibly welcome. The neighbourhood is quiet and picturesque and the house sits right on the cliffs, with amazing views from the house and the back garden. The place was fully equipped with all the necessities. You definitely need a car to commute around the island if you're staying here. The only thing people might like to know is that there are a few cats on the property, and they do hang around the units in case that bothers anyone. I would highly recommend this place and would definitely return.
I wholeheartedly recommend you stay at Dan's. He was the perfect host. Met us on arrival, gave us all information needed was available as needed but otherwise gave us our own space. His home and gardens were beautiful and the view rivaled only by 5 star resorts. The kitchen for the rental units is out in the garden which was lovely. There is a microwave and coffee maker in the room but I don't know why one would choose to have dinner anywhere other than the lovely kitchen garden. There is a local produce stand in Keaau near the McDonalds, otherwise get your other provisions at the Safeway on the way down from Hilo.

About the Host, Dan
For 30 years I traveled around the world for pleasure and business. Formerly an executive in a division of one of the major US hotel companies, I've lived in Hawaii since 1995 and when I retired in 2010, my wife and I moved to the part of Hawaii (and the world) we liked best.
