Description

The space

Situated on an acre of land that slopes gently downward toward a bluff at the ocean’s edge, the property offers a unique environment perfect for a peaceful and relaxing vacation experience. Enjoy the tranquility of the zen garden, long walks along the coastline, or simply sit and relax amid the serenity of a shady retreat between lily ponds. The property is fully landscaped with over 100 varieties of flora, including: bamboo, water lilies, fragrant flowers, ornamental vines, succulents, and fruit-bearing trees.

Take a relaxing dip in the Japanese-style soaking tub that spills over into a gorgeous, 42’ long, salt water, infinity edge lap pool. Soak up some sun or recline under an umbrella on a poolside lounge chair overlooking the ocean. The pool deck area includes an outdoor hot water shower.

When conditions are right, the snowy peak of Mauna Kea can be seen from the property, as can whales, dolphins, sea turtles, Nene and other species unique to Hawaii. Fishing is a common activity along the bluff.

Accommodations are in a luxurious oceanfront home offering spectacular views. The residential building includes the owners’ residence and two two bedroom apartments, one above the other. The two floor plans are identical and each has approximately 880 SF of living area. Both the upstairs and downstairs units can be rented as either a one- or two-bedroom unit. When rented as a one bedroom unit, the second bedroom and bathroom are closed off and remain unoccupied for the duration of the one bedroom guests’ stay.

Dan's place is beautiful! As with many Airbnb's, there are pros and cons. We rented the place for my wedding which had about 30 guests, and 8 people actually stayed in the house. Here is what we learned from our experience: The good- - the place really is heavenly. The view is unbeatable, and every inch of the property is well cared for. You could really tell that dan and his wife take pride in their home. - there are many fruit trees and chickens on the property, and dan's wife brought us fresh eggs from the chickens and fresh fruit from the trees. We ate every bit of it and it was delicious. - (though this might not apply to everyone) the place was the perfect wedding venue for us. It was probably better suited for about 20 people, but it worked well for us actually. We had the ceremony in the zen garden, and the reception in the carport area (which is also ridiculously beautiful.) The bad- - there are LOTS of rules, many of which we didn't know about when we booked the place. The most significant one for us was that guests who are not staying at the house were not allowed in the pool or the pool AREA, which is the most obvious place on the property to hang out. I understand why this is a rule, I just wish it would have been made clear before we booked the property. There were also less inconvenient rules (but rules none the less) such as which towels to use for the beach, the pool, or the bathroom. There were 3 PAGES of rules upon check in. - the house is split in half, with dan and his wife living in half and the other half is rented out. His patio also leads to the pool area, as do his windows. So, with all the rules (and being scolded a few times), we really felt like we were walking on egg shells during our stay. - there was a rodent of sorts living between the walls while we were there. This didn't necessarily bother me, but something to note. - unlike most Airbnb's I've stayed in, this kitchen was not equipped with standard cooking foods, i.e salt and pepper or cooking oil. It was more like a hotel but with lots of rules. Other things to note- - though I was the one to book the property, I spoke to dan only twice. He worked with my dad instead of me. - dan did give my parents some good advice on where to eat, local attractions, etc.

Wow! What an amazing place! Even more beautiful in person! It was a perfect place to relax after a 200 mile race. It is also a great location. Not only are you right on the water, ocean view, but just a couple miles from hilo, 30ish from the volcano. The farmers market a few miles from the house was also amazing. And if you never wanted to leave the house, you could do that too! There is a great pool, soaking tub, and dirt trail that goes a few miles along the ocean. And like many said before me, Dan is an amazing host. Very helpful and lots of info about the island and things to do. After check in you almost didn't even know he was there but if you have a question, he's always available. I hope to be able to come back for a more relaxing trip with my family. Thanks again Dan!!

This was an amazing find. We had both apartments for 5 adults and it was perfect. They are well furnished, beautifully decorated and well appointed. The views are stunning from the property and the pool is perfect. We had a great time. This is definitely a 5 star listing. The area is so quiet and peaceful, and the gardens are beautifully designed to heighten the feeling of peace. The location is ideal for the volcano, especially viewing the lava flowing into the sea, thermal pools, Hilo and several National Parks. I cannot fault this listing - if you're reading this review you should stop and go back to the top and book before the dates you want go!!

We had an amazing time at Dan's place. The property is amazing, the house was spotless and very well thought out. Dan was available with anything we needed but we had plenty of privacy. The pool and view were beautiful. Hilo was a good spot for a home base and we saw the almost the entire island, Kona is about two hours away but the drive is gorgeous. Could not of had a better time

Just spent a week at Dan's gorgeous ocean front property and wanted to enthusiastically recommend it to everyone. We were a party of 8 celebrating my fathers 70th birthday and rented the whole house. The house, pool, rooms, and gardens were inviting and very comfortable. Dan is the consummate host.....invisible but always available to answer any questions, provide directions, and share his rich knowledge of the islands. He was also very understanding and accommodated any special requests we had. We will certainly come back here in the future and have no hesitation about renting from Dan anywhere. Neil

We were personally welcomed, as well as, received a very detailed welcome packet with local adventure spots, directions, maps, dining options and more. Dan (and family) were scarce but available for any questions/concerns (we had zero concerns!) The property was far better than the photos. The attention to detail and beautifuly designed home were top notch! We especially enjoyed the pool, soaking tub, outdoor kitchen and numerous zen gardens. It was literally the moat relaxing place I've ever stayed at! Mahalo, Dan!
