The Space

Lhasa House at Chakra Garden is a charming studio cottage with a zen-like atmosphere, unique privacy and its own street entrance. It is located on the perimeter grounds of a vintage house built in 1884. The property’s interior gardens are developing into a healing sanctuary. We, Dr. Zeb Lancaster & Candace Cave, are yogic body-mind healers in private practice.

Originally a mechanics garage built in the 1930’s, this 400 sq ft building was made completely habitable in 2012. You’ll discover bamboo floors in the spacious main room, an entry lobby that doubles as a dressing room with coat & shoe caddies, an elegant bathroom with tiled shower, and a cozy kitchenette (microwave, toaster oven, mini-fridge/freezer). The mini-split HVAC keeps the space at a comfortable temperature throughout the year. There is Wi-Fi for your connection convenience and no television to distract you from a quiet life lived in the present moment.

Lhasa House sleeps as many as 4 people: two upon a comfy Englander Pillowtop queen bed and two upon Ikea’s queen size convertible sofabed. Sheets are 300+ thread count organic or Egyptian cotton. Towels are thick and plentiful (3 per person).

Lhasa House’s soothing interior is supported by personally gathered artifacts and breathtaking photos from Lhasa, Tibet.

Lhasa House has ample, safe street parking right in front of the door. Travelers accommodations at Chakra Garden of Ashland are permitted by the City of Ashland.

Chakra Garden is located 4 blocks north of Ashland’s Downtown Plaza, 2-blocks up the street from the Kagyu Sukha Choling Center for the Practice of Tibetan Buddhism, 3-blocks from Ashland Institute of Massage Therapy (AIM), and 4-blocks from the United Bicycle Institute. It is almost across the street from a south-bound Ashland/Medford bus stop and a block from Ashland’s Youth Hostel. Ashland’s Natural Food Coop is a beautiful 6-block walk. There are restaurants located only 1 block north, and a Minute Market 1 block south. You’ll find everything else you need for entertainment and shopping beginning just 4 blocks south at the Ashland's Downtown Plaza.

Guest Access

Lhasa House has it's own private street entrance. Parking is safe and ample at curbside in front of the building. Lhasa House also has a back door that opens into the garden. The grounds are available for your enjoyment and pleasure, including a deck with bar-b-que, several shady places to sit, and (soon) a ping pong table and hammock. You can also choose to make an appointment for healing treatments with Dr. Zeb or with Dakini Candance.

Interaction with Guests

Chakra Garden of Ashland is pleased to host your visit to Ashland, although unless you specifically ask to meet us, or encounter us in the garden, we’ve arranged your visit to be independent. Chakra Garden desires to provide a comfortable and private experience.
You are welcome to spend time in our garden, but please do so cautiously and at your own risk. The garden is in development, the pathways are uneven, there might be obstacles in your passageway. There may also be others in the garden when you are. We appreciate your consideration.
We are yogis and body-mind healers. Dr. Zeb is a counselor and Rolfer; Candace an embodiment guide and Tantra educator. We provide private sessions, group classes, and healing retreats. Throughout the summer of 2014, our Monday and Wednesday 5:15-6:30pm meditation classes are open to everyone ($10 donation – arrive a few minutes early). And consider scheduling therapeutic bodywork or a healing appointment with Dr. Zeb or an energy tune-up with Candace to enhance your visit.

The Neighborhood

Lhasa House is on the grounds of Chakra Garden, a vintage Ashland property in the historic Skidmore Academy District. We're 4-blocks north of Ashland's Downtown Plaza, the heart of our village activity. There's an ally (Lori Lane) at the base of the grounds (near Lhasa House front door) that connects Hersey St to Van Ness. Van Ness is a quiet neighborhood street with charming houses, mostly built in the early 1900s, that leads to the A Street corridor and the Bear Creek bike trail. It's a great location.

Getting around

Chakra Garden is easy walking distance (10-15 minutes) from all major attractions in Ashland (Lithia Park, Oregon Shakespeare Theater, world-class dining and shopping). You can walk to the Plaza on Main Street, or stroll through neighborhood houses. Ashland Natural Food Coop is only 5-blocks away and there's a mini-market a block down the street. A RVT bus stop is across the street and bus number 10 will take you south to the University and north all the way to Medford. Sometimes we loan our old Trek bikes to guests - the Bear Creek Greenway for biking and hiking runs 27+ miles north from Ashland and is about 0.5 mile away.

  • Candace was truly gracious, warm, and responsive -- though I never met her in person, she radiated a welcome presence through all our communication exchanges. The Lhasa House was just perfect for me and my 21-year-old daughter to enjoy Ashland without getting in our car once. We walked to OSF, SOU, the local coop, the park, restaurants -- and enjoyed every second. Very cozy home, comfy beds and bedding, inspiring art, beautifully decorated. Would definitely stay here again -- and hope to soon!

  • Very clean and well appointed. Quiet and private. Easy walk to downtown and the theater. When the garden is opened in the summer, it will be an added benefit. It was plenty of room for two people.

The hosts were very responsive. They let us in before check-in time when we arrived early. They very promptly took care of a broken shower curtain rod.

  • Had a wonderful time in Ashland. The Lhasa House was so peaceful and inviting. I slept on the pull out bed, and while you can expect it to feel like a futon, I slept on it well all night, which is an accomplishment for someone who sleeps as lightly as I do. My mom was on the traditional bed and said she also slept great! The only thing missing was a big cozy chair to curl up in with my book.

Zeb and Candace were responsive hosts, coming by when we had specific requests but allowing us total privacy otherwise. I also communicated several times with Candace via email and always had a quick reply. I would definitely seek out their housing again in the future.

    Response from Candace:

Hello Janelle. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay in Lhasa House. Next time, we'll try more cushions on the leather swivel arm chair that's in the room and hope you'll find it more comfortable - Candace has one in her space and likes it for reading. And I think the sheepskin on your sofa bed helped make it seem less futon-like. We look forward to hosting your next visit to Ashland. Hope you can stay longer.

  • My partner and I had a beautiful 5-night stay in the serenely private and comfortable Lhasa House, during an OSF and SOPride vacation. We enjoyed the studio so much that we happily spent an "evening in" one night when we were both tired. The location is wonderfully convenient, whether you're there for a short theater-focused visit or a longer stay.

Everything you need is provided in high quality, from toiletries and a hairdryer to kitchen towels, dish soap, and tableware for 4. If you take your technology with you, you'll rejoice to find grounded outlets intelligently placed throughout the space (even one in the generous entryway). We appreciated the shoe and coat rack behind the door, since we're already in the habit of removing our shoes when we come inside.

As you'll note in the photos, don't expect a table and chairs for meals, or a stove for cooking. We found the futon chair and the sling-back swivel chair to be just fine, and the two stools doubled well as side tables. We used the small table built into the wall for some computing and also as a handy place for keys, jewelry roll, etc. We never got the toaster-oven out of the cupboard, since all we needed was the hot-water pot and the microwave. There is generous cupboard space in the kitchenette, but no pull-out drawers; utensils are in a tray in the cupboard to the right of the sink. A clever Ikea hanging dish drainer is easy to assemble for use.

We asked permission ahead of time to move the futon bed so that the head was against a wall, which placed it conveniently between two outlets, and moved the floor lamp next to it for bed-time reading. The futon was in bed position when we arrived, and we never did put it up as a sofa.

We sleep on a futon at home, and found the bed to be *perfect* with the cushy sheepskin pad. We slept very well here. If you require solid darkness to sleep you may wish there were curtains instead of blinds on the windows, but we were fine. In daylight, the well-chosen golden-tan color on the walls and the honey-toned bamboo flooring just make the room glow softly. The space is graceful and elegant--spare, yet comfortable. They did a very thoughtful job on the remodel of this studio. The photography and wall hangings are interesting and beautiful.

We never met our hosts, but privacy is one of the things that make Lhasa House such a jewel. They were always responsive by airbnb, text, and one phone call I made to the main house as we were preparing to leave. They cheerfully accommodated our request for extra towels for our longer stay (my partner likes a clean towel each day) for a reasonable $10 laundry fee.

We had a fantastic stay in Ashland, and staying in Lhasa House was a big part of that. Thank you, Candace and Zeb!

  • Very comfortable. The Ikea futon bed was quite comfortable--firm, but that's how I like it. Excellent choice of pillows and linens. Lovely warm duvet in the armoir, if you need it. It was already made up as a bed, and I didn't convert it to a sofa during my stay, but the convertible feature could be handy.

Sparely but beautifully appointed space. Not much by way of furniture, but the two chairs (one armchair and one Ikea convertible) are both comfy. There's a tiny desk/table attached to the wall. Lighting is highly adjustable, which I found perfect for all situations.

Thoughtfully appointed kitchenette alcove, with filtered water, electric kettle and complimentary teas and microwave and toaster oven (in cupboard) for warming things. Nicely finished lavatory with shower (no tub). Very nice toweling.

Very comfortable private entrance to this completely detached structure. Nice sense of privacy and seclusion. Wi-Fi connectivity. Very comfortable walk to downtown/OSF. Pleasant walk to Ashland's excellent co-op market..

Excellent communication from the host prior to arrival, and nice introductions via their websites upon arrival. No face-to-face contact during my stay, but I felt connected to them all the same.

    I felt completely in heaven.

  • Lhasa House was a great place to call home for a weekend in Ashland. Candace and Zeb made great use of a small space and added high-end finishes and amenities - like cushy towels and lovely shower. The AC was much appreciated for an August visit! The kitchen was tiny but contained all the essentials needed to enjoy the peaches and chevre gathered from the Saturday Farmer's market.

Older folks should keep in mind that the bed is a futon mattress. It was initially comfy, but after a couple of hours, it ended up being too firm for our old bones which affected our sleep and we woke up sore. A plusher pad - like the sheepskin pad - would solve that problem and just add one more layer of luxury to a very lovely, spa-like studio in a great location.
