The space

Lhasa House at Chakra Garden is a charming, modern studio cottage with a zen-like atmosphere, unique privacy and its own street entrance. There's a pillow-top queen sized bed that is recommended as "very comfortable." The large and enclosed property is only 0.5 mile north of Ashland's downtown Plaza, gateway to most Ashland landmarks (Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Lithia Park, unique shopping, and sophisticated cuisine). There's a variety of ways to walk into town, so there's lots to explore even on that journey.
Lhasa House is located on the grounds of a vintage home built in 1884. This 400 sq ft building was built in the mid-30s and was used as a working (auto mechanic) garage. It was a burned-out shell with a falling down wall, with no electricity or water, when we purchased the property in 2010. We designed the cottage interior with the intention of using it as an office to see therapy clients, but instead decided to invite weary travelers to enjoy the comforts of our garden and the great proximity to downtown Ashland.
The nearly 0.4 acre lot has allowed us to create a garden environment that serves as a healing sanctuary and pleasure space. We call it Chakra Garden of Ashland. You'll find a deck with bar-b-que, many shady and sunny places to sit (often with a table). There's a firepit, a ping pong table (under cover in our pavilion), a shady hammock, and a lawn area for yoga/martial arts, plus a hot tub for your relaxation (small fee). Our gardens are intended as a therapeutic sanctuary, themed around the body's energy centers (Yoga), the Chakras. We, Dr. Zeb Lancaster & Candace Cave, are yogic body-mind healers in private practice in Ashland and online.
Inside Lhasa House you'll discover bamboo floors in the spacious main room, an entry lobby that doubles as a dressing room with coat & shoe caddies, an elegant bathroom with tiled shower, and a cozy kitchenette (microwave, toaster oven, mini-fridge/freezer, electric kettle). The kitchenette was remodeled in January 2017 to make it more usably efficient.
The mini-split HVAC keeps the space at a comfortable temperature throughout the year. There is Wi-Fi for your connection convenience and no television to distract you from a quiet life lived in the present moment.
Lhasa House sleeps as many as 4 people, albeit cozy quarters: two upon a comfy Englander Pillowtop queen bed and two upon Ikea’s queen size convertible sofabed (made more comfortable with a sheepskin pad). The quarters may be a little close with 4 full sized adults, but the cottage interior is larger than most motel rooms and there are many more amenities.
Sheets are 300+ thread count organic or Egyptian cotton. Towels are thick and plentiful (3 per person). Pillows are a plentiful mix with both down and quality foam available.
Lhasa House’s soothing interior is supported by personally gathered artifacts and breathtaking photos from Lhasa, Tibet.
Lhasa House has ample, safe street parking right in front of the door.
Please be aware that we love dogs, but cannot accept your canine companion, or any other pets, as a guest.
Lhasa House at Chakra Garden is located 0.5 mile north of Ashland’s Downtown Plaza. Just a few more steps takes you to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Bricks and Lithia Park. Walk directly south down N. Main Street and arrive at the Plaza in 10-12 minutes; or, stroll amongst the houses, through the Historic Skidmore Academy District and arrive at the Plaza in 12-15 minutes. Your enjoyment of Ashland's main attractions won't require a vehicle.
If you're coming to Ashland for a class, we're 3-blocks up the street from the Kagyu Sukha Choling Center for the Practice of Tibetan Buddhism, 4-blocks from Ashland Institute of Massage Therapy (AIM), and 5-blocks from the United Bicycle Institute. The Dance Space is 0.5 miles south along Hersey, and we're 1.5 miles north of the University (SOU).
Chakra Garden of Ashland is almost across the street from a south-bound Ashland/Medford bus stop and a block north of Ashland’s Youth Hostel. Ashland’s Natural Food Coop is a beautiful 6-block walk. There are restaurants located only 1 block north, and a Minute Market 1 block south. You’ll find everything else you need for entertainment and shopping beginning less than half mile south of Chakra Garden, around Ashland's Downtown Plaza.

Guest access

A free-standing building, Lhasa House has it's own private street entrance. Parking is safe and ample at curbside in front of the building, or up the street in our 3-car driveway.
We'll leave the front door unlocked and the key inside, or the front door locked and key under the mat, depending upon your anticipated arrival time (we live in a very safe neighborhood). We ask you to check-in with Zeb via text or phone call when you arrive.
Lhasa House also has a private back door that opens into the garden. The grounds of the backyard at Chakra Garden of Ashland are available for your enjoyment and pleasure. You'll find a deck with bar-b-que, several shady and sunny places to sit often with a table, a firepit, a ping pong table (under cover in our pavilion), hammock, and lawn area for yoga/martial arts. Our gardens are evolving into a healing experience, themed around the body's energy centers (Yoga), the Chakras. Please ask us about it when you see us playing with the plants. You can also choose to make an appointment for healing treatments with either or both of us.

Interaction with guests

We are please to host your visit to Ashland in Lhasa House at Chakra Garden of Ashland. Your self-contained cottage is very private and unless you specifically ask to interact with us, or encounter us in the garden, we’ve arranged your visit to be independent. Chakra Garden desires to provide a unique and comfortable experience.
You are welcome to spend time in our garden, but please do so with awareness, and at your own risk. The garden is in development, the pathways are uneven, there might be obstacles in your passageway.
In addition to hosting your visit to Ashland, we provide private healing sessions, group classes, and healing retreats. Our Monday and Wednesday 5:30-6:45pm meditation classes are open to everyone ($10 donation – arrive a few minutes early). You are welcome to schedule a therapeutic bodywork or a healing appointment with Dr. Zeb or an energy tune-up with Candace to enhance your visit.

The neighborhood

Lhasa House is on the grounds of Chakra Garden, a vintage Ashland property in the historic Skidmore Academy District. The house has a name, "Payne-Penter," describing the first owner and then the owner who added the main house upstairs and front porch, plus the carriage house cottage we call "Temple House."
We're 4-blocks north of Ashland's Downtown Plaza, the heart of our village activity. There's an ally (Lori Lane) at the base of the grounds (near Lhasa House front door) that connects Hersey St to Van Ness. Van Ness is a quiet neighborhood street with charming houses, mostly built in the early 1900s, that leads to the A Street corridor and the Bear Creek bike trail. It's a great location, very central to the "heart" of Ashland's village community - the Plaza & Lithia Park (+OSF).

Getting around

Chakra Garden is easy walking distance (10-15 minutes) from all major attractions in Ashland (Lithia Park, Oregon Shakespeare Theater, world-class dining and shopping). You can walk to the Plaza on Main Street, or stroll through neighborhood houses. Ashland Natural Food Coop is only 5-blocks away and there's a mini-market a block down the street. A RVT bus stop is across the street and bus number 10 will take you south to the University and north all the way to Medford. Ask us about borrowing our old bikes (there's also nearby bike rental shops) - the Bear Creek Greenway for biking and hiking runs 27+ miles north from Ashland and is about 0.5 mile away from us. Plus it's easy to bike all the way to the south end of town. There's also a southbound Route 10 (Medford to So. Ashland) bus stop across from the property on N. Main St.

Other things to note

We don't provide any food, although you'll discover a fine selection of tea bags in the compact kitchenette. There's not room or appliances to cook a major meal in Lhasa House, but the microwave works well, the small toaster oven heats breakfast, and the fridge has it's own freezer so keeps ice cream perfectly cold. The plastic square tray hanging on the kitchenette wall pulls down to become a dish drainer.

Candace's place was a wonderful find. Our stay was peaceful and smooth from start to end. The location was great. We didn't get in our car once we got there because it was so convenient to either walk or bike into plays, coffee shops and restaurants. Zeb let us know he was available, if needed, but otherwise, we were welcome to enjoy the lovely garden area. The cottage had everything we needed, comfortable bed, wine glasses. Access out the back door to various outdoor seating areas was a real plus for us.

Quiet & peaceful cottage, I enjoyed coffee while sitting in the garden, a short, about 3/4 mi walk into town

Response from Candace:
We are very glad you were comfortable staying at Chakra Garden of Ashland, Nancy. We just want to point out that Candace's fitness tracker, as well as that of a friend, measures the walk to town as exactly 0.49 miles to the downtown plaza. OSF and Lithia Park are a bit further than that.

This place was everything we were looking for. Far more warm and personal than a hotel and for a much better price. The garden is extraordinary. We can't wait to visit again soon!!

Lovely, peaceful setting. Space is as advertised. I would love to come back when the garden is in its summer bloom. Candace and Zeb are great hosts. They were available to answer questions, but left us to peacefully enjoy the tranquility of Lhasa House.

The place was nice and clean. And close to everything. It's a cute lil studio. Good for 2 or 3 people. Me and my son get to check out her garden in the backyard and even get to play ping pong for a bit :) and Candace was there the whole time we needed direction or for anything. Not much of a kitchen but all we need is a microwave and a mini refrigerator which is all good. I will definitely stay here again when I visit Ashland to see Shakespeare festivals...

I live in So. Oregon. I have traveled throughout the Pacific Ocean on 35-ft sailboat. I lived in Europe for 6 years. I've practiced Yoga for 40 years. I guide embodied non-duality meditations (weekly classes & private sessions). I am a Tantra educator embracing Wise Woman Ways. I like to laugh. I love people's stories and am a good listener. I host guests & students at my healing sanctuary, Chakra Garden of Ashland (Oregon). We offer 3 private cottages that open into our evolving gardens. My partner in all aspects of the Ashland adventure is Dr. Zeb Lancaster, somatic counselor & sex therapist. We have written 3-books together, including BodyMind Boundaries for Beginners, plus we both guide individuals, couples, and groups towards somatic healing of body/heart/mind. Zeb spent much of his childhood living abroad. Your fulltime onsite Chakra Garden host, Zeb is fluent in Portuguese and French, plus can manage Spanish and Italian. I also host guests at my Homestead Woodland Cottage, southwest of Medford. Located at the beginnings of the Applegate Valley Watershed, in the Griffin Creek area between Ashland & Jacksonville, my not-in-Ashland time is spent at the Homestead with my beloved husband of 31+ years, Richard "RG" Guches. This 50 acres of woods bordering on BLM wildness was settled in the 1880s by RG's great grandparents.
