On the best possible location, right in the heart of Panama City’s historic district, Oxygen Casco Viejo offers the amenities one would find in a modern building- with the historic appeal and charm only found in Casco Viejo.
The building is a unique combination of the old and the new. The original structure collapsed in 2004 from neglect and has been resurrected from archival photographs and other reference materials, in strict accordance with Casco Viejo historical standards. The façade of the building was designed to replicate the original structure and the interiors combine both modern as historic design elements.
The building features rooftop terraces, an elevator, a back-up power plant, video security system, gym and a rooftop swimming pool.
The apartment is sprawled out generously across 4 levels:
-A spacious and modern living/dining room with 25 feet high ceilings and double French doors opening out onto the large and sunny ocean view balcony.
-A full Italian design (Veneta Cucina) kitchen with oven, gas range, LG double fridge freezer, coffeemaker and all necessary tools and utensils.
-A double bedroom with King-size bed, walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom with shower, bath and second toilet (Kohler fixtures).
-A private roof terrace with comfortable outdoor design furniture, outdoor shower and jaw dropping 360-degree views of the ocean, the entrance of the Panama Canal, Ancon Hill and Panama City.
All rooms are equipped with LG split level air conditioning. There is a DVD player (with USB and SD-card option) in the bedroom, as well as a small collection of DVD’s for your entertainment. There is an iPad/iPod docking station in the living room. Naturally we offer free Wi-Fi internet-service.
The apartment features hand poured tiles in living areas and tropical hardwood floors in the bedroom. There is some incredible local art on display.
The plunge pool, as well as an additional outdoor seating area, is situated on the communal roof terrace and accessible 24 hours a day. The Gym can be found on the ground floor, with a rack of dumbbells, an exercise bench, home trainer and the ultimate runner’s treadmill (ProForm Performance 400), which combines revolutionary technology with performance features.
We can organize several fantastic day tours or short adventures to add to your stay at Oxygen Casco Viejo. Feel free to ask us anything about Casco Viejo, or Panama in general.
We will assist you during your check-in and check-out.
Cons: We had made arrangements for an early check in at least a week before. We arrived at the same time as the cleaning lady. I am sure she felt rushed but it was only superficially cleaned. She did not change the 2 kitchen towels. The downstairs toilet was backed up. The facets and tub areas were not wiped down, etc. I would have expected the bath gel and shampoo dispenser to be filled but the bath gel was empty. There was a slight sewer smell when you walked into the apartment likely from the toilet problem. Our key did not work for the rooftop pool which was a huge reason we rented the apartment. It was also difficult for getting into the building as it took numerous attempts and a few minutes. I would expect for the price that coffee and soap might be provided. Fortunately I packed a small bar of soap. The former renter left tiny bag of coffee was was 80% empty. In the half bath downstairs there was no soap or towels - not even a towel bar.
Pros: The layout of the apartment and location was great. It was nicely decorated. The balcony and rooftop sitting area was (website hidden) was good. Lots of great restaurants in the area. Seems like the old town area is the best area to stay in Panama city. Maarten was so kind to pick us up and also take us to the airport at 4:30 am. We paid him generously for his transportation. He also went over several restaurant suggestions.
Although some pro's were mentioned, we are really quite unpleasantly surprised by above review and would like to use this space to reply in detail. On Airbnb, we are used to having wonderful communications with our guests - whom understand the concept of using someone's private home instead of a hotel. Nevertheless, we have both owners, as well as a caretaker on call 24/7 and we will go out of our way to ensure people enjoy their stay at our apartment. Any problems are handled promptly. We send a message to ask our guests to check the apartment upon check-in, and inform us immediately if anything is not as expected. This is also written on the first page of our information-book at the apartment, that we ask everyone to read. Unfortunately Bonnie did not inform any of us during her stay (although she was handed a mobile phone to use free of charge) and never expressed any dissatisfaction. She actually has been in touch with our caretaker on numerous occasions with questions about the area. The 'arrangements' that were made for an early check-in was actually simply us being kind enough to allow Bonnie an early check-in free of charge, although the apartment had been booked up to the night before and we had expressed that cleaning had to take place. The very strange story about the key to the rooftop pool baffles us: there is no lock on the door to the pool, as all our other guests can confirm. It is a communal area. The pool is available for our guests 24/7. We find it very strange that if the pool was a huge reason to rent the apartment, none of us were informed about the mysterie key (we have no such key and there is no lock on the door) not functioning. We must admit, the key to the building illogically turns in the opposite direction, but this is written on the key as well as explained during check-in. Although we agree our cleaner should have filled the dispenser, there is extra soap available in the cabinet, as well as sufficient towels. It is correct that we do not buy coffee for our guests, as most people go out for coffee and it tends to lose flavor fast in our climate. Whenever required, we offer transportation for our guests, which is mostly out of a service perspective: we charge an average fee and do not expect 'generous payment'. In short, we think this review is strangely harsh and we could have easily solved every single issue mentioned within half an hour (accept for the imaginary ones) had we been informed. We do ask all of our future guests to inform us if anything is not as expected as soon as possible and to give us a chance to solve it. Naturally however, as our track record shows, we will do our utmost to simply offer an excellent apartment with service to match.
After the first day we fully enjoyed our stay. We arranged for Maarten, the caretaker, to pick us up from our previous location and he took us right to the apartment. He stated that the regular cleaning person did not come in and so an alternate cleaner was used. We all could tell that the place was not cleaned as well as possible. Maarten offered to stay and clean but after a long canal tour we just wanted to get settled. We cleaned some that night and more the next day. After that, we enjoyed the apartment,
balcony, restaurants, and all the area had to offer. We left very happy and would recommend it to others.
Thank you for leaving feedback Jim, it is much appreciated. Unfortunately we were all disappointed by our regular cleaning-lady not showing up. We have let her go because of this to ensure similar mishaps will not happen in the future. We thank you for your understanding and we are happy to hear you really enjoyed the apartment and Casco Viejo. We hope to welcome you back sometime!
The reservation was canceled 125 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
We had a great time in this lovely, spacious and modern apartment in the center of Casco Viejo! If you appreciate a fancy place to stay in Panama City, Edwin and Fiona's home is the perfect spot to stay!
Edwin and Flora were such attentive hosts, made all the more impressive since they were not even in town when we were staying at the apartment! They were very helpful before our trip with recommendations, and even arranged for our ground transportation upon arrival. They continued to be helpful throughout our stay, with the help of the caretaker, Maarten. The apartment itself is amazing, consistent with how it is advertised on this site, and right in the middle of the up and coming Casco Viejo neighborhood. You just cannot beat a rooftop terrace with shower and pool, as well as a private balcony! I would not hesitate to stay here again!
My mom and I had a wonderful time in this apartment! Casco Viejo is definitely where we wanted 'home base' to be during our trip in Panama, and loved the amount of restaurant options we had in walking distance to this apartment. We felt safe even walking in the evenings around here. The apartment is designed beautifully with a modern and comfortable feel. Keep in mind there are a lot of stairs in the building, which was challenging for my mom after a physically intensive trip preceding Panama. It was all worth it, however, as we spent a lot of time relaxing with our books on the roof deck and pool with beautiful views of the sunset. Edwin and Flora were so responsive during our stay which was a huge help as well. We would definitely recommend any location of theirs!
Thank you Allyson, for your kind words and for taking the time to leave a review; it is much appreciated! Just to inform new guests further with regards to the stairs situation: There is actually an elevator in the building and there are two stairs in our apartment: one leading up to the bedroom, the other to our private ocean- and Panama Canal- view roof terrace.
Great Location! The apartment is exactly as shown on the photos. We were pleasantly surprised at how everything was. just as we imagined! Will definitely stay there again!
Edwin and Flora's apartment in Casco Viejo is a fantastic option for visiting Panama City. The unit itself is brilliant with two levels, a roof terrace and a great front balcony. The rooms are spacious, the air conditioning works great and the location couldn't be better.
The apartment is within several blocks of numerous restaurants of various types as well as bars, coffee shops, small markets for everyday items and even a microbrewery. Taxis into the city are easy to find in the Plaza de la Independencia but a walk along the Cinta Costera is a great way to see Panama Bay and visit the Seafood Market.
Casco Viejo is lovely, though it should be noted it's undergoing massive infrastructure changes. Those improvements will be to the benefit of future guests but there is quite a lot of construction and a few random power and water outages along the way. Increasing gentrification brings positives and negatives to an area, but for visitors it's mostly the former.
Overall, we couldn't have been happier with the location, the unit and the experience in Casco Viejo.
Could not ask for a more beautiful apartment, a better welcome or overall satisfaction. This had everything as described and Maarten was unbelievably flexible in getting me up and running when I arrived. Would highly recommend and will definitely be coming back!
it was a pleasant surprise to arrive in such a cozy and hip apartment. this is the kind of place that makes you kinda jealous that's not yours.
apartment location is great - casco viejo seemed the best place to stay in panama city. the area has restaurants, (surprisingly nice) souvenir shops and bodegas nearby and is only USD 4 distant from other relevant areas (as long as you know to negotiate with taxi drivers).
place was well equipped with appliances and the hosts left a useful brochure with info regarding panama and the neighborhood.
they also arranged an airport pickup for us.
