Our city of Escazu lies at an elevation of 1,101 meters above sea level on the northeast slopes of the Cerros de Escazú, 9 kilometers west of the national capital city of San José. The climate is moist tropical: it is not unknown for Escazú to experience rainfall on a day in which San José is dry and sunny. November and December are frequently windy.
Over the past couple of decades Escazú has become an expatriate enclave: several embassies have their residences located here, including the residence of the US Ambassador and the British Ambassador. The past few years have seen a significant influx of newly arrived foreigners from North America, South America and Europe. It is home to many bars and restaurants, especially those of the more chic variety. Rents and prices reflect this and Escazú is the most well-known upscale location in Costa Rica. Here, one can find English movie theaters and even a luxurious country club. There are also many fine restaurants and dining areas in this part of town, with an excellent nightlife. Banks, pharmacies, shops, grocery stores and even an 18-hole championship golf course can be found here, along with one of the biggest and most modern shopping malls in Central America, Multiplaza.
Escazú is one of the wealthiest places in Costa Rica, with many great restaurants and shops, and has some of the most exclusive shopping and dining in the country. It has new developments, like Avenida Escazu, which holds the country's first IMAX theater. Avenida Escazu is a modern outdoor mall/center. This mall has many international brands like Max Mara, Women's Secret, Cortefiel, and Adolfo Dominguez, and the country's first Starbucks. Another unique feature of Escazu is it holds the most luxurious mall in Costa Rica, Multiplaza Escazu, which is home to many big international brand names like Zara, Armani Exchange, MNG, Guess, Lacoste, Tiffany and Co., Carolina Herrera, Salvatore Ferragamo, among others. Many locations in the city are prized for their scenic outlooks. This zone is one of the most developed parts in the metropolitan area.
Escazu is the premier location in the Central Valley with easy access to innumerous activities:
Central Market, National Theatre, El Pueblo night life, Bird Zoo, National Parks, Coffee-Tour, Art-Tour, River-Rafting, Hiking, Volcanoes, Canopy-Teleferic, Horseback riding, Tropical Bungee jumping, the vast San Jose cultural life.

Some of my favorite Restaurants:
El restaurante Pescatore está enfocado en ofrecer recetas donde la creatividad y originalidad son el plato fuerte, fusionando la cocina del Perú con la del Mediterráneo en una experiencia única para los comensales.
El nuevo concepto tiene como enfoque los pescados y mariscos, sin embargo se puede encontrar variedad de platillos dónde destacan los ceviches, rissotos y pastas.
Banzai Sushi Asian Cuisine
Situated on a hillside overlooking the San José metropolitan area in Costa Rica, Le Monastère represents a combination of quiet reflection and full-blown festivity, expertly mixed to please all facets of the dining and nightlife spectrum.
The restaurant boasts an eclectic history. Originally the home and chapel of an elite family in the early 1900's, the buildings were later converted into a monastery for religious novitiates (of an unknown denomination). Today, the site hosts one of Central America's best restaurants.
And one of my favorite attractions:
La Paz Waterfall Gardens:
La Paz Waterfall Gardens es la atracción ecológica privada #1 más visitada de Costa Rica que le ofrece los mejores senderos cerca de San José, las más famosas cataratas en Costa Rica, incluida la famosa Catarata de La Paz, un centro de rescate y reserva privada de vida silvestre con más de 100 especies de animales y programas de educación ambiental.
We really look forward to welcoming you to Costa Rica.
Guests have access to the kitchen area, breakfast sitting area, beautiful backyard with seating area and hammock, tv room with tv, dvd player and stereo system. Car parking is within our private gated property just outside the front door.

House Address: Guahipelin de Escazu, 50 meters west of the PAVICEN bus stop. The house is light green in color, the iron gate is red in color and there are red roof tiles on top of the gate. The steep driveway entrance is made of concrete. The buzzer to ring the house is located on the right side of the gate behind the plant.
Copy these directions in Spanish to give to the taxi drivers as they will understand very well how to arrive directly to my place.
The public bus to go from here to San Jose is conveniently located just 50metres from the house. The bus is labelled: Escazu, Guaçhipelin, PAVICEN. Just to clarify, Escazu is the city, Guachipelin is the street and PAVICEN is the name of the bus stop. The color of the bus is not a guide. Check the front window of the bus for the correct route information. If you get down in San Jose at the Coca Cola bus stop, memorize the exact place for example look what is in front of you when you get off the bus.
Of course be cautious of your wallet, camera and telephone. Do not make them visible to anyone.
The bus is much less expensive than taxi or car but you will need to allow additional time for the bus.
The reservation was canceled 4 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
This was the second time I have stayed with Anabelle and her family and everything was as good as the first time if not better. I live in Costa Rica part time but I like to stay in different part of the country and if my stay is less than month or two I normally book it with BnB. But this time was different as I had a surgery at CIMA and I needed someone I can trust, that they will take care of me for a week, as my whole family live up north.
She picked me up from hospital, fed me three times a day and between and drove me to the pharmacy when I needed more medication. I think Anabelle and her family's push and encouragement made a big different on my fast recovery. It felt good to sit around the breakfast table and talk to everyone all over again. It was nice, they made me feel part of the family.
I booked this place due to the good feedback I read, but times change and so do people. I couldn't wait to get away from this place, I found the atmosphere terrible due to the stressed out Anabel , who couldn't cook by her own admission as her cook had left her( wonder why!) I wasn't asked what I liked but watermelon and coffee wasn't it. Her stressed out nature and rudeness was amazing to say the least, being critiqued was also insulting behaviour too.
But to top the cake, refusing to give me $70 change back from a $100 dollar note( because she didn't have change? Was theft.
I felt so humiliated that I didn't want to spend my time in a police station making a report which would of cost me more than the $70 she took.
I just didn't want her behaviour to spoil my holiday and decided that this review would warn potential people away from her. I have made a complaint to airbnb for a full refund and to have her taken off their list. Criminal behaviour should never be rewarded.
As for those few, that do not adhere my advice, further critique it's $30 away from the airport so a trip into town and back will cost you more than the room itself !! Her offer of cooking failed , her promise to,take me to a restaurant , theres none within 2 miles, resulted in being let down.
So all in all the worst experience I've had for a while.
I strongly advise not to book with her.
You will be disappointed !!!
In this bed and breakfast there is no menu. We serve typical food, which
everyone has liked so far; even you, because you ate everything except for
the watermelon. The only day you spent in this house, you ate the whole
breakfast, lunch, and coffee time. Last two meals for free.
I listened to you, never judged, and I think we spent nice time talking
when it was possible, and as I do with everyone who comes here. I don´t
understand how that could be disrespectful.
I think the reason of your explosive behavior started in first place,
because you could not rent a car since you did not have a credit card. In
the second place, because I did not go out with you for dinner. I´m not
entitled to take out my guests outside. I do it nicely if I can.
Next morning, very early, you were leaving the house without letting me
know you were leaving and without taking breakfast. I reminded you to pay
me the taxi transportation fee from the airport, and you gave us a
surprise: a furious reaction, yelling, shaking, with a completely out of
proportion expression in your face and hands. You scared my daughter and I
when we didn`t have the change. You kept yelling us to keep the bill and
left. I asked you to please don´t go that way and you left. We have your
money, you are going to stay in Costa Rica for one month, come and pick it
up. It is important to make the difference between stealing money and not
waiting for the change.
I think your story tells more of your personality than about our service.
All our reviews have been consistently good and constructive. Lying the way
you had, is criminal behavior.
I always say that if you don't take the time to meet the people when traveling in a country you might as well stay home and read National Geographic. Here's your chance to meet Anabelle and her two lovely daughters and experience Costa Rica up close.
Her house is beautiful, spacious and sparkling clean. Do yourself a big favor and take advantage of her offer for lunch and dinner at least once. Lunch was the best of our trip and we stayed in some 4 and 5 star lodges. Beg for the plantains baked with cheese.
Anabelle picked us up and took us to the airport, and went out with us the first evening to Tiquicia, a real Tico place with a spectacular view and live folk dancing and great food.
She speaks excellent English and is a seasoned traveler.
Anabella's home is a rare bargain and we've stayed in many AIRBNBs.
Muchas gracias Anabelle for a perfect ending to a great trip.
Wonderful place with a lovely garden! Anabelle is a very friendly and warm host. She helped us a lot during our stay! We'll come back at the end of our stay in Costa Rica.
We had a great 3 nights with Annabelle and her friends and family. As the other reviews have said, the house and gardens are stunning and it is a private oaisis that is peaceful and serene. We enjoyed sharing christmas lunch with her and the breakfasts were traditional, fresh, filling nd very tasty. We even decided to book another 2 nights with her at the tail end of our trip such was our appreciation and enjoyment.
Highly recommended if you prefer to stay out of San Jose city but still have the convenience of a cheap bus trip into town or to a central bus terminal to connect to other parts of Costa Rica.
the house is very clean and comfortable. anabelle's gardens are amazing. it was heavenly sitting in her backyard for morning coffee.
unfortunately her cook left the day after our arrival so her breakfasts could have been better. .
the location of the house is in a very nice residential area but somewhat far from everything. there is however a bus that goes past the house and the bus stop is not too far away.
this bnb would be better suited for someone with a car.
Friendly/ helpful hostess. Really enjoyed staying with this welcoming Costa Rican family & sharing some meals & good times together. BEAUTIFUL home & gardens. Huge windows throughout the home bring the beautiful outside in. Large covered back porch is wonderful- enjoyed sitting out there watching the birds & butterflies.
We loved our spacious room, with 2 walls being floor- to- ceiling windows that look out over a BEAUTIFUL garden area. The bed is not really a kingsize bed, but I think it is 2 twin beds together, which makes it kingsize or almost. So it is large, but there is a gap in the middle. Also, there is no wall shower, which we really missed having. (There is a hand held shower head.)
Enjoyed watching colorful birds & butterflies that were new to us- even from our bed. (Bring binocs!) Warning- birds are LOUD at daybreak, but I personally didn't mind it. Anabelle is a true artist with her landscaping skills. Walking around the diverse, mostly tropical gardens (back, sides & front) you could always find something new blooming & it was a real feast for the eyes. And lovely floral arrangements kept changing throughout the house & back patio.
Unfortunately this place is not walking distance to restaurants or grocery stores. So, we ate most evening meals there. The meals were wonderful, but their friendly & excellent housekeeper/ cook, Demaris, is leaving soon we were told. Hope they can find another excellent cook because eating the delicious tico fare was one of the great pleasures of staying there.
Taxis can be expensive. Most taxis drivers did not speak English, but are generally friendly. Use the official red taxis. Even using them, you can still be taken advantage of. One took the long way back from a trip I took & cost almost twice as much. I struck up a conversation with one driver that spoke English at my doctor's office who said it is about $26 to the airport. (It cost us more using a non-official taxi.)
The bus stop is close but the bus system there can be somewhat challenging if you don't speak Spanish. (I was told by the doctor I saw there that everyone spoke English in CR. NOT true! But many, especially the younger people, do.) I don't think the bus drivers generally speak English & they are usually very busy making change & trying to stay on schedule, so they don't seem to want to engage in conversation- not even with Spanish speaking bus riders. (website hidden) Escazu Guachipelin bus schedule for a fairly accurate schedule. Make sure you have Costa Rican money. Some buses had a string you pulled to signal when you want off & some had buttons on poles to push. Pay attention to the route so you get to know it. Anabelle helped show us this a couple times before I felt comfortable going on them. (No hablo español! ) Bus fares are inexpensive.
All in all, FABULOUS place & hostess!
We arrived for a meeting and family get together. Anabelle greeted us warmly offered us a welcome juice ( delicious , all natural ) and made us feel right at home. She sat down with us and gave us all her attention in her beautiful and peaceful outside patio. She answered any questions we had and even invited us to go to the movies with her later! Anabelle is an inspiring woman. I was so happy to have met her. The home was ultra clean and organized. We had access to the entire house and her live in maid was THE BEST! She even helped iron my clothes from my meeting and made us breakfast every morning. Anabelle delivers on anything you may need and is always there. One night we had to come in late from the city and she even gave us a little training session on how to work the alarm and remote for gate! She is also available ( or her friend Patricia ) to drive you wherever you may need. ADDED bonus, one day we decied to stay in and focus, we worked outside mainly which was lovely and the maid made us a healthy lunch for a very reasonable cost! The pictures don't do the house justice, this house is warm and much more beautiful than the pictures show. The location is close to everything, safe and the best part is meeting Anabelle and her live in maid, they are generous, attentive and amazing hosts and deliver way more than you would expect for such a reasonable price! I will be staying here again when I come into the city. Thank you Anabelle and Damaris! You made our stay warm and easy.
What a lovely home and garden! The room was clean and comfortable and spacious; the views of the garden were lovely. The hostess was very friendly and easy and fun to hang out with. We enjoyed a couple of Costa Rican award-winning films together, that I ordinarily would not have gone to see. She even arranged for her friend to be my personal taxi. I had a lovely time, and it was so nice to "come home" after a long day of work and errands. Annabelle made me feel very comfortable and welcome.
