About this listing
KIRPAL MEDITATION AND ECOLOGICAL CENTER (KMEC)
Our recently remodeled studio cabin is tucked away in the back of an 6 acre orchard. It is fully self-contained with its own kitchenette, full outdoor bathroom, and a wrap around lanai (deck).
Enjoy waling our spacious and open ten acre property surrounded by a buffer of Jungle. We have 150+ orchard trees with 30 or so kinds of tropical fruit. You're welcome to help yourself to the freshest fruit possible whenever they're ripe!
Ocean swimming is half a mile downhill at Isaac Kepo'okalani Hale Park - one of the few safe places for swimming on this rugged, extremely scenic, coast.
A body-temperature warm-pond park is just a half mile further, as well as excellent snorkeling in the wave-protected Kapoho Tide Pools, with dozens of corals and thousands of brightly colored tropical fish.
The nearly constant lava-flow has recently stopped flowing into the ocean, however that area is just half an hour to the West of us and perfect for a sunset or sunrise hike where you would have seen a cascade of red-hot lava plunging 50 feet into the ocean boiling below. For lava flowing viewing one needs to hike a bit longer nowadays on higher elevation. Truly awesome! A peak experience for most of our guests. Nearby steam vents are a blast too!
Standard shopping, a natural foods market, and excellent restaurants are 15 minutes away in Pahoa Town. Several large Farmer's Markets operate on the weekends too.
Our Teak Meditation Pavilion was made in Bali and is, to us, a very holy and special place for prayer and reflection. We don't preach, or otherwise "reach out"...., it's simply there if you would like some peace and tranquility - which is, as most people tell us, our main product. :-)
Please try to arrive before dark or shortly thereafter.
Children under 12 stay free.

Interaction with Guests
We make a special effort to interact with our guests without disturbing their privacy, just to see if we can be of any help.
Our location is pristine. Mango Road is a sacred authentic, well preserved landmark to the ancient Hawaiians and so beautiful.
There is a local bus which stops about 1/2 mile down the road at Isaac Hale Park. Renting your own car makes perfect sense.
We comfortably exist on a large solar electric system, some propane, and mostly catchment rain water. You don't have to scrimp, but we do ask that you be mindful of the limits of these kinds of "off grid" systems.
KMEC is a vegetarian oriented facility. The owners and some of our staff are strict vegetarians avoiding meat, fish fowl and eggs (both fertile and infertile). They do eat cheese and dairy. Meat eating and non-vegetarian guests are most welcome at KMEC. You should advise our General Manager of your dietary preferences when booking your reservation. We will make every effort to accommodate you and provide you with the most enjoyable stay possible.
DRUGS, TOBACCO, ALCOHOL AND INTOXICANTS
KMEC is a drug, alcohol, tobacco and intoxicants free center. Our focus is on meditation, spirituality, healing our body, giving peace to our soul and healthy living. The owners and some of our staff totally abstain from the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and intoxicants. We recognize that not all of our guests are similarly oriented and you will be welcome in any event. You should advise our General Manager of your particular preferences, if any, with regard to these issues and we will make every effort to accommodate you. Please inform management in advance when inviting friends or relatives on property. Please inform management in advance when inviting friends or relatives on property.

Good overall experience. I had never booked on arbnb and misunderstood - thought they served breakfast (some disappointment there). Beautiful environment and good for natural lovers, those who want quiet & meditation, yoga space.
Thank you for your comments. We'll try out best to seal our cabins, but a good plant-based mosquito repellent is a must in tropical areas, and with those loved by the mosquitoes. I'm lucky. They don't sting me! As to the guideline for guests not picking fruits, this is because if you do not know how to harvest a fruits, you may seriously injure yourself, damage the tree, or simply harvest when the fruits aren't ready. We've already had that happen, and that's why we adopted this guideline. We usually harvest fruits that are ripe, and offer them to our guests. As you recall, I also take guests on nature walks around the property for free, and educate them on our plant life, and also how & when to harvest.
The facilities at Kirpal are a great experience. The room itself was great; lovely comfy bed, washing and cooking facilities, food storage, and outdoor bathroom. This listing is for those who truly want to experience an 'off-the-grid' way of living. Whilst my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, this listing would not suit everyone.
The hosts were very accommodating and flexible. The cabins were spartan and clean and off the grid, exactly what we were expecting. Noni has its own kitchen and bathroom, which was perfect for us...the other cabins share a communal kitchen and bath.
This place is in a very nature setting with lots of fruit trees. The amenities are simple but we found them to be enough for our meeds. It is a great setting for yoga and meditation retreats! We went as a couple that just wanted to get away for a meditation retreat and do some yoga and we were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and helpful!
Kirpal was amazing! Such a friendly and peaceful place to stay and relax in the beautiful southeast coast of Hawaii. The cabin was clean and comfortable with beautiful views of the property and orchard. I really enjoyed the place and highly recommend it. Thank you!
Very remote location. If you are looking to get away from the town this is a great option. I would describe this cabin as "glamping" (glamour camping). The toilet and shower are outside on the back deck. There is a bed, closet, counter and sink inside the cabin. No frills. There were many nighttime noises including frogs, pigs, rain, and other insects and animals. We explored the farm and found coconuts, papayas, oranges, grapefruits, and starfruit. Cool experience
This was perfect for our needs. Steve was laid back and very flexible for our arrival and departure times. At first I was a little nervous that this location, advertised as a vegan, meditation center and I'm not really into either that it might feel awkward. I knew the area and wanted this location as well as an open cabin so thought I'd try anyway. It was great. Will stay again.

About the Host, Kirpal Meditation And Ecological Center (KMEC), A Vegetarian Orchard For Yoga, Retreats & Workshops
Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center is a half mile from the ocean on the eastern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii, approximately seven miles from the small village of Pahoa. The 10-acre ocean-view property is blessed with average daytime temperatures of 85° F year-round, and 65° F at night, with cool, fragrant trade winds, surrounding tropical flora, including old growth mangoes, nearby swimming, surfing and snorkeling.
This property was once a papaya farm and is now newly planted with bamboo, papaya, palms, banana and many other fruit trees. The octagonal Balinese meditation pavilion is set among shade-trees with an expansive view of the ocean. The island wildlife is all around us – a variety of birds by day and at night there's the pleasant chirping of Coqui frogs – and there are no snakes. Natural wonders include Volcanoes National Park, for lava and crater viewing, volcanically heated warm ponds and steam vents (as outdoor saunas) and other wonders of the lush tropics.
Kmec opened in the summer of 2008 for pre-arranged seasonal meditation retreats and private meditation-vacations on request. Additionally, we would like to extend our welcome to Big Island travelers offering cozy cottages and open air kitchen and bath. We offer daily free meditation instructions and practices at our beautiful Balinese meditation pavillion. Additionally, we offer Yoga and nature tours upon guest's request (donations accepted).
