About this listing
Cozy downstairs bedroom with private bathroom and separate backyard entrance. Great residential neighborhood, walking distance to downtown San Mateo and the train station. Regular queen bed with adjoining full bathroom, french doors lead to the back yard. Small but comfortable space, wi-fi available. The household does have two cats and there are chickens in a coop in the back yard. Ample street parking, we also have loaner bicycles available. We have installed a small refrigerator and microwave in the laundry area off the guest room.
We have an older single family home in the Baywood knolls section of San Mateo, 10 miles from SFO, 20 miles south of San Francisco, 20 miles north of Palo Alto and Stanford University. My wife and I live upstairs and have my stepsons part time, two well behaved boys ages 14 and 15. We are happy to visit and orient you to the neighborhood and the bay area, or not, as you wish. We both are frequently at work or out of town. Downtown San Mateo is a 15 or 20 minute walk with a vibrant restaurant and social scene. Cal trains runs from downtown San Mateo to San Francisco at least every hour or so, $5 each way. We do have a Sam Trans bus stop two blocks away that runs on weekdays.
No Smoking please
No smoking, no pets, no loud noise after 10 pm. We are fairly easy going people and are happy to make our washer and dryer available to guests staying more then three days. We have an ironing board and hair dryer available on request. I will generally not accept reservations more then thirty days in advance unless they are for a week or more.
A lovely guest room with all the amenities needed. Nicholas and his wife were very understanding and hospitable host.
Great safe area and easy walk to downtown San Mateo.
Such a great first Airbnb experience! Nicholas was super helpful, easy to communicate with and very friendly. The place was accommodating and had all the charms of home. I flew in and my flight was delayed a few hours which ended up being late but no problem Nicholas still made me feel welcome. They provided everything I could've needed including a KindBar and some coffee in the morning before an early interview! Nicholas then proceeded to offer me a ride to the airport! So nice! It definitely got me to my interview with more comfort and ease than trying to get a cab. And Voila! I got the job. So, THANK YOU Nicholas for opening your home to me!! I would definitely recommend anyone to stay here in the future!
Great stay! Convenient location in a great part of town. Good sized room with separate entrance opening out to Mediterranean style garden. Your own attached full bath, and kitchenette with microwave and mini fridge. Comfy bed and everything is very clean. Good water pressure for showers. Owner checked in mid-trip to make sure I had everything I needed. Would stay again in the future.
Our stay with Nicholas was a last minute decision after wanting to stay another night in the Bay Area. Nicholas was flexible in allowing us to arrive late in the night (around 11PM), and even stayed up to meet us on the porch upon arrival. He was very approachable and humorous, and offered to help with our bags on the way to our room at which he showed us where everything was. The room had tv, wifi, a beautiful bathroom, and it was spotless; 10/10 for cleanliness. We only had a quick overnight stay, but I could imagine staying here as an alternative to staying in the city of SF as it's just a short drive up the freeway. Would stay again should the opportunity arise.
Listing was as described. Private room with private bath in a nice, quiet, quaint neighborhood. Room was very comfortable, clean and neat. Mini refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave were offered, but we didn't have a need to use them. Our amiable host, Nicholas, was there to greet us and lead us to our room.
We met their 10 hens which were amusing to watch. Only saw one of their two outdoor cats at the end of our stay. Being allergic to cats, I had no allergic reactions during my stay.
The neighborhood and surrounding cities are a diner's delight. The choices for eateries was amazing. Nicholas was helpful to offer suggestions and ideas for places to eat.
Our host provided free Wifi connection. It was a bit slow to connect to, but functioned adequately once connected.
As a downstairs room, sounds like beneath the kitchen or family room, there's considerable foot traffic above late into the night. If you're sensitive to noise (foot falls and creaking) during the night, then I would recommend ear plugs for a good night's rest.
Otherwise this place is a delight.
Hi Lynn, we are always concerned that it is a downstairs room in our house, which is a family house. I'm sorry if you were disturbed by foot traffic, we actually go to bed fairly early but do use the bathroom at night, etc. We actually keep some ear plugs in the desk, we once had someone complain about the train, a mile and a half away.
Nicholas was welcoming via telephone as we were on our way to San Mateo from Sacramento. He greeted us when we arrived, showed the clean, comfortable and nicely decorate dindependent room, bathroom and kitchenette downstairs, and then took us on a tour of his garden and chicken coop.
Afterwards, when we had a small challenge with the TV remote control, he came down right away and solved the problem.
In the morning, I walked to the top of the hill around the corner from his home, and found a great view of San Francisco Bay.
The room is a great find for us, as we frequently come to California from our home in Atlanta, and Nicholas' home is very near the San Francisco airport. We will definitely stay here again.
About the Host, Nicholas
We love our quiet neighborhood and the easy location to downtown. Tiffany works as a dental hygienist and Nicholas is a contractor. We enjoy our cats and chickens and love to work in the garden.
