About this listing
Cozy downstairs bedroom with private bathroom and separate backyard entrance. Great residential neighborhood, walking distance to downtown San Mateo and the train station. Regular queen bed with adjoining full bathroom, french doors lead to the back yard. Small but comfortable space, wi-fi available. The household does have two cats and there are chickens in a coop in the back yard. Ample street parking, we also have loaner bicycles available. We have installed a small refrigerator and microwave in the laundry area off the guest room.
We have an older single family home in the Baywood knolls section of San Mateo, 10 miles from SFO, 20 miles south of San Francisco, 20 miles north of Palo Alto and Stanford University. My wife and I live upstairs and have my stepsons part time, two well behaved boys ages 14 and 15. We are happy to visit and orient you to the neighborhood and the bay area, or not, as you wish. We both are frequently at work or out of town. Downtown San Mateo is a 15 or 20 minute walk with a vibrant restaurant and social scene. Cal trains runs from downtown San Mateo to San Francisco at least every hour or so, $5 each way. We do have a Sam Trans bus stop two blocks away that runs on weekdays.
No Smoking please
No smoking, no pets, no loud noise after 10 pm. We are fairly easy going people and are happy to make our washer and dryer available to guests staying more then three days. We have an ironing board and hair dryer available on request. I will generally not accept reservations more then thirty days in advance unless they are for a week or more.
This was our first Airbnb experience, and it was a good one. Our flight arrived in the morning and Nick allowed us to check in early (noon). Nick was a great host. When we first arrived he showed us around the room and what amenities were there (washer/dryer, mini fridge, complimentary water bottles, Keurig coffee maker, wi-fi, microwave, etc.), and then he gave us the keys. He offered suggestions for places to eat and things to do, and checked on us halfway through our stay to see if there was anything we needed. With our own keys to our own private entrance, and all the amenities of a hotel room, Nick did a great job giving the guest room the feeling of a private apartment.
The wi-fi was fast and easy to connect to (and necessary as cell reception was really bad with Verizon).
The room was exactly as described, clean and comfortable. The shower has a nice Kohler shower head and was stocked with shampoo/conditioner/body wash. There is a portable hanging rack with hangers for clothes which was nice. The bed was not bad, the sheets were soft and comfortable. The mattress is relatively thin, but we slept well.
The neighborhood is quiet and safe, and there was plenty of parking on the street right outside the house. We didn't spend much time in San Mateo, but it seems like a nice place. It's convenient to San Francisco (~30 minute drive) and the airport (~15 minute drive).
The only negative part of the experience was the noise from people walking around upstairs, starting at 4:30am on the weekdays. Nick did let us know on arrival that footsteps would be heard through the ceiling, and there's nothing he could do about it, which is understandable. We just weren't expecting that amount of noise in the early morning hours.
I'm very sorry about the early morning noise. Tiffany had a clinic that Friday in Tahoe at 8:00 am so we did get up at 4:30 so she could drive up with some friends who came over at 5:00. That is a very unusual thing, usually during the week, we get up and are out of the house between 6:45 and 7:30. It didn't occur to me to let you know about her plans in advance.
This was our first airbnb experience and it was a good one! The room, hosts and amenities were all very nice. The location was nice and quiet and it was also a bonus to have a private entry. Thanks for the nice two night stay!
My host, Nicholas was in the driveway when I arrive. We chatted about neighborhood, restaurants, etc. Lovely home and backyard- more like a private retreat. Also meet family & friends which made me more comfortable.
A lovely guest room with all the amenities needed. Nicholas and his wife were very understanding and hospitable host.
Great safe area and easy walk to downtown San Mateo.
Such a great first Airbnb experience! Nicholas was super helpful, easy to communicate with and very friendly. The place was accommodating and had all the charms of home. I flew in and my flight was delayed a few hours which ended up being late but no problem Nicholas still made me feel welcome. They provided everything I could've needed including a KindBar and some coffee in the morning before an early interview! Nicholas then proceeded to offer me a ride to the airport! So nice! It definitely got me to my interview with more comfort and ease than trying to get a cab. And Voila! I got the job. So, THANK YOU Nicholas for opening your home to me!! I would definitely recommend anyone to stay here in the future!
Great stay! Convenient location in a great part of town. Good sized room with separate entrance opening out to Mediterranean style garden. Your own attached full bath, and kitchenette with microwave and mini fridge. Comfy bed and everything is very clean. Good water pressure for showers. Owner checked in mid-trip to make sure I had everything I needed. Would stay again in the future.
Our stay with Nicholas was a last minute decision after wanting to stay another night in the Bay Area. Nicholas was flexible in allowing us to arrive late in the night (around 11PM), and even stayed up to meet us on the porch upon arrival. He was very approachable and humorous, and offered to help with our bags on the way to our room at which he showed us where everything was. The room had tv, wifi, a beautiful bathroom, and it was spotless; 10/10 for cleanliness. We only had a quick overnight stay, but I could imagine staying here as an alternative to staying in the city of SF as it's just a short drive up the freeway. Would stay again should the opportunity arise.
About the Host, Nicholas
We love our quiet neighborhood and the easy location to downtown. Tiffany works as a dental hygienist and Nicholas is a contractor. We enjoy our cats and chickens and love to work in the garden.
