The Space

Aloha ! This is a great place to stay.

We always want to improve our accomodations so we keep a comment book in our cottage to capture customers comments about our place and how we can improve our tenants experience here... and it is FULL of messages just like this!

1) Susan And Andre...This cottage was great! I wouldn't hesitate to stay again. Thanks for the hospitality.

2) Thank You so much, the past 3 nights in the cottage have been FANTASTIC! I really look forward to coming back to visit.

3) Very nice cottage - it is so cute! We really enjoyed! Two thumbs up ! We will recommend this place for sure!

Yes, our tenants LOVE our ocean front house and you will too.

The Whale House is located in one of the most beautiful places on earth - Kehena Beach on The Big Island of Hawaii.

This house is the closest place to Kehena Beach on Kalapana-Kapoho Rd. It has 1 bedroom w/ queen bed & full bathroom, a sofa bed that sleeps two in the LR, fully equipped kitchen, beautiful lanai, washer & dryer, FREE Super fast WI-FI internet, land line w/ free long distance, Direct TV, flat screen TV, CD , blender, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator/freezer, wood/tile floors, and typical household amenities that give you the feeling that "you are at home". There is a Hawaiian rock barbecue situated in our tropical garden w/ ocean view. It doesn't get much better than this.
It also has an ocean view from every room in the house, including the bathroom. No mosquito problems.

If you are interested in Yoga, we are situated in between two world famous Yoga Centers located here on 'The Red Road'.

Many people come to Hawaii to visit Volcano National Park - home of Kilauea and the periodic lava flows just a short distance from us. There are also Hawaiian jungles, tropical rain forests, beautiful coastal views, geothermically heated ponds, snorkeling, whale watching w/ dolphins that migrate to the warm Hawaiian waters from Alaska. You can often see them from our lanai off our beautiful coast - in the Kehena Beach area. Many of my tenants have told us that they were able to swim w/ the dolphins and you can too!

This is the place for water lovers - you should see the spectacular ocean view & sunrise over the south pacific from our lanai - where you may want to eat your breakfast!! Whales and Dolphins can often be seen from the lanai during winter months.

Also, snorkeling area is just down the road at the Tide pools? You can easily navigate all of these places from the cottage in Kehena Beach, it has come to be a very popular spot 'right in the center of all of these attractions'.

For those of you who are seeking night time entertainment, check out 'Uncles Outdoor Hawaii Bar' if you want to sip a beer, listen to live Hawaiian music, eat great food and enjoy a farmers market at the same time.

The Whale Hous is located in beautiful Kehena Beach on the Hilo side of the Big Island of Hawaii and just a short walk across the street to the world famous Kehena Black Sand Beach.

Pohoiki Point and the famous Kapoho snorkeling waters are also near by and remain popular snorkeling, surfing and swimming areas. Compare our rates to those in Kapoho - you will love our place.

Kilauea Volcano is just a 45-60 minute drive where you can walk through Thurstons Lava Tube and look in to Kilauea Caldera.

You are also close to the lava viewing area, tide pools, snorkeling, fishing areas, Akaka, Kahuna and Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots, hiking, Farmers Market (1/2 block away), Space Community Arts Center, Keck Observatory, Kilauea , Uncles Bamboo Tiki Bar w/ live music, cafes, food markets, Volcanoes Nat'l Park and so much more - are just 10-45 minutes away.

My mission is to make sure that you have what you need to make your visit a happy, and memorable experience ! This is also a great place to relax and enjoy nature. Many people come to Kehena Beach to 'get away from it all and breath clean air, eat great food, soak up the sunshine, exercise, commune with nature, and meet some wonderful people. So come and find out 'what the aloha spirit really is'. We invite you to come Hawaii..it truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

You will love this place - picture yourself sitting on the lanai w/ the sound of waves crashing on the cliffs below while gazing at the South Pacific through ocean front coconut trees that are swaying w/ the Hawaiian trade winds. This is truly the Hawaii that you dream about. Call Andre to inquire. (View from this house is shown in our pictures)

NOTE: We also have a special provision for weddings. Pastor Thomas Monago is our wedding officiant who will perform your wedding at the beach or local park.
This is also the perfect 'honeymoon suite' where you can actually sit on your lanai and see whales and dolphins off shore...along with the boats and cruise ships that cruise by.

  • My husband and I were able to take a last minute honeymoon/first anniversary trip to the Big Idsland and fortunate to happen across Susan and Andre's studio. They were unable to have us at that location but were quick to offer other accommodations at an unbeatable price. If we needed anything they were just a phone call away.
The Whale House at the Kahena Beach property was more than we could ask for with a full kitchen and shared laundry room.
We highly recommend Susan and Andre as your hosts.

  • The Whale House was amazing! I was traveling with my parent and also my mother and it was plenty of space for the three of us. It is definitely out of town, but if that's what you're looking for it's perfect. Pahoa is a really interesting town but we got the freshest eggs I've ever had at the natural food store, and one of the best meals of my life at Kaleo's in town. The snorkeling in the tide pools is some of the best in the world and very close to the house. The gecko's and frogs were a great entertainment and we husked a coconut that had fallen in the yard for fun.

The town is also verrryyy liberal, so if you're going to be uncomfortable around hitchhikers or offended by clothing optional beaches, this may not be the place for you. But in that case you are going to miss out on an amazing part of the island!

  • Cute, quiet spot with its a black sand beach right across the street! Near town but not in the middle of it which I loved!

It`s a great cottage, great area. We like it a lot for peace rest. But if you would like to travel along the Island, it`s better to live first part of your travel at South coast and the second part of travel - near with Kona.

  • Great location and looks just like the photos. Andre and Susan are very nice and helpful. Sad we missed uncle Roberts parties so we will need to come back but had a great trip. The big island is awesome!

  • Susan and Andre have beautiful cottages in a magical setting. Very comfortable with lots of added touches--beach towels, bogie boards, washer/dryer. This is the perfect spot if you are looking to get away, as it is quite a ways from town, etc. It is across the street from the black sand beach and took lots of walks and drives to enjoy the amazing coastline.

We took a back route and gotten lost on our way to the cottage--be aware, while the cottage has wi-fi and land line, there is no cell service. Andre and Susan were extremely patient with our calls, getting us there. It isn't hard to find if you know where you are starting from!

If you go, make sure you stay on a Wednesday to go to the Kalapana Farmer's Market and party. Seems like half the island comes out for amazing and authentic Hawaiian music--we even were treated to a hula from some local stars, great food and a magical moon rise over the lava fields and ocean. Our only disappointment was that the lava was not flowing during our visit.

We would definitely come back and recommend to others.

  • Staying at this oceanfront cottage was great! The location was perfect - gorgeous views just steps away and far from the hustle of Hilo, plus easy access to the Volcano National Park (~1 hour away), and where we took a lava hike (just 15 minutes down the road, and our main reason for visiting the Big Island). The cottage is lovely, well-equipped and the lanai was wonderful. This cottage is situated fairly close to two other cottages on the property, so if you are sensitive to noise or looking for a remote getaway, this might not be the place for you. However, we did not spend much time in the cottage and the other guests did not bother us - plus this cottage is situated in a way to give you utmost privacy. My mom found the trail down to the beach right in front to be too difficult and the surf down there was a bit rough, but it was lovely to be so close to the ocean and many other beaches nearby. The hosts were wonderful, gave us some local tips, and it was really nice to have laundry on premises. Highly recommended!!

  • The location was great!

The cottage was close to so many things we wanted to check out on the big island like the lava fields, Volcano National Park, black sand beaches. Cottage was very clean and relaxing. We were very comfortable here. Andre, Miguel and Susan were very friendly and helpful.

The cottages are surrounded by a lush forest full of nocturnal chirping frogs and mosquitoes. Stock up on whatever repellant you prefer if you plan on hanging outside at night. We loved the remoteness feel of the area and the nearby views across the street are superb. The night skies were beautiful with more stars than one could ever count. The nearby clothing optional black sand beach is a short hike down the cliff side. It's not a hard trek, but could be tricky if the ground was wet.

We recommend stopping by the Hilo farmers market after leaving the airport and stock up on fresh produce. There were a lot of cool shops near the market as well.

In the mornings we made our way down to the Cafe at the end of the road for coffee and espresso. We tried Uncle Robert's fresh brewed Kava which has a very "earthy" taste and a relaxing effect.

One of our favorite experiences was taking a hiking tour to see the lava flow. The lava field hiking tour we took is located across from Uncle's Kava bar at the end of the street and was worth the price. Make sure you wear hiking shoes and pack some water.

We also recommend checking out Puna Girl Farms which is pretty close. Puna Girl Farm is a beautifully kept macadamia nut farm that produces nuts for Hawaiian Host and is owned by a very nice lady and her husband. There's a small gift shop on the farm where you can purchase all kinds of goodies, including our favorite buy, aged macadamia nut honey.

Everyone we talked to was very friendly. We love the Aloha Spirit that's present everywhere. We wish we had more time at the cottage and hope to stay here again soon!

Thank you very much Andre, Miguel and Susan!!!
