Aloha ! This is a great place to stay! Find out why this cottage is the best kept secret in Puna.
The Whale House is located in one of the most beautiful places on earth - Kehena Beach on The Big Island of Hawaii.
It is the closest unit to Kehena Beach on Kalapana-Kapoho Rd (aka) The Red Road. It has 1 bedroom w/ queen bed & full bathroom, a sofa bed that sleeps two in the LR, a fully equipped kitchen, a beautiful lanai, washer & dryer, free/reliable WI-FI internet, land line w/ free long distance (party line), Direct TV, flat screen TV, CD , blender, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator/freezer, wood/tile floors, and typical household amenities that give you the feeling that "you are at home". There is a Hawaiian rock barbecue w/ sink just 25 feet away. It doesn't get much better than this.
It also has an ocean view from every room in the house, including the bathroom.
If you are interested in Yoga, we are situated in between two world famous Yoga Centers located here on 'The Red Road'.
Many people come to Hawaii to visit Volcano National Park - home of Kilauea and the periodic lava flows just a short distance from us. There are also Hawaiian jungles, tropical rain forests, beautiful coastal views, geothermically heated ponds, snorkeling, whale watching w/ dolphins that migrate to the warm Hawaiian waters from Alaska. You can often see them from our lanai off our beautiful coast - in the Kehena Beach area. Many of my tenants have told us that they were able to swim w/ the dolphins and you can too!
This is the place for water lovers - you should see the spectacular ocean view & sunrise over the south pacific from our lanai - where you may want to eat your breakfast!! Whales and Dolphins can often be seen from the lanai during winter months.
Also, snorkeling area is just down the road at the Tide pools? You can easily navigate all of these places from the cottage in Kehena Beach, it has come to be a very popular spot 'right in the center of all of these attractions'.
For those of you who are seeking night time entertainment, check out 'Uncles Outdoor Hawaii Bar' if you want to sip a beer, listen to live Hawaiian music, eat great food and enjoy a farmers market at the same time. A health food buffet is just 1.2 miles away and the Kalapana Café & Uncles is just 3.5 miles from us.
The Whale House is also near Pohoiki Point and the famous Kapoho snorkeling grounds which remain popular snorkeling, surfing and swimming areas. Compare our rates to those in Kapoho - you will find that we are close enough, our view is incredible as well and you won't have to pay those Kapoho rates.
In addition, Volcanoes National Park is just a 45-60 minute drive from here and there is a recent lava flow 10 minutes from us and it is free to see. This is a great home base to see all the sites in Puna, yet far enough away from the rainy parts on this side of the island.
You are also close to the lava viewing area, tide pools, snorkeling, fishing areas, Akaka, Kahuna and Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots, hiking, Farmers Market (1/2 block away), Space Community Arts Center, Keck Observatory, Kilauea , Uncles Bamboo Tiki Bar w/ live music, cafes, food markets, Volcanoes Nat'l Park and so much more - are just 10-45 minutes away.
My mission is to make sure that you have what you need to make your visit a happy, and memorable experience ! This is also a great place to relax and enjoy nature. Many people come to Kehena Beach to 'get away from it all and breath clean air, eat great food, soak up the sunshine, exercise, commune with nature, and meet some wonderful people. So come and find out 'what the aloha spirit really is'. We invite you to come Hawaii..it truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
You will love this place - picture yourself sitting on the lanai w/ the sound of waves crashing on the cliffs below while gazing at the South Pacific through ocean front coconut trees that are swaying w/ the Hawaiian trade winds. This is truly the Hawaii that you dream about. Call Andre to inquire. (View from this house is shown in our pictures)

PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE! This cottage is across the street from a very popular yet beautiful, black sand beach which is clothing optional.
Since this is tropical Hawaii, there are insects in the area & near the cottage 'at times' which is normal living for Hawaii residents. We do provide Citronella candles and a stinger light which are quite effective 'when needed'.
The beach is also down a trail across the street & the beach is not wheelchair accessible and again.
Please remove waste and clean the dishes when you leave. Also, try to remember to turn off fans and lights when leaving the cottage. We don't allow smoking in the house.
Lovely little getaway to a lesser traveled corner of Hawaii. This was our first AirBnB experience and it went very smoothly. Very clean, comfy bed and plenty of fans to stay cool. Thanks Andre and Susan!!
We enjoyed our start at Whale House. Everything was exactly as described. Susan was friendly in the phone and Andre took the time to go back to his house to bring us a detailed map of the area. He offered several suggestions about things to do, including nearby hot springs that we never would have found otherwise. We loved having breakfast out on the lanai and listening to and seeing the ocean. Bugs were not a problem at all. This is a special spot in a unique place!
The Whale House was very cozy and clean. Although there was major rain during our stay we were still able to enjoy patio with a nice ocean view.
The house was very clean. However, we left early because of excessive bug bites, it was too hot (no AC) and the beach in front of the house is a nude beach not appropriate for our daughter. André was nice enough to reimburse us 1 night out of the 3 that we did not stay.
We are sorry the Stloup family didn't enjoy the tropical climate here in Hawaii.
Many people from the northern countries aren't used to tropical climate and everything that goes with it. Most people are aware that tropical places such as Hawaii - are warm and humid and dream of experiencing it.
We did appreciate his statement that the place was 'very clean', which is important to us and our customers.
We are considering air conditioning but there are few days at this location where it is actually needed since most nights are in the 60-70's along the coast.
We enjoyed our time at this location. The host Andre was friendly and helpful. The listing was accurate; the location is right across the street from the ocean. It was breathtakingly beautiful and the locals were friendly.
Andre met us when we arrived and had the place cleaned and ready. There is a little market and bar/snack shack where Wednesday night's street market is held, about 2 miles up the road. We enjoyed the house, laid back neighborhood, and small beach across the street (the path is not disabled accessible) is quite and lovely. The frogs make a nice sound throughout the day. We would return again.
The whale house is in a great location. We were interested in finding a place with nearby swimming and snorkeling while still having a nice, private, ocean-front location to return to after a long day out. We are not the resort-going type, so the whale house was a perfect refuge for us. The whale house was perfectly situated for visiting Kapoho tidepools, which were excellent for snorkeling (saw many different colorful fish), as well as Hilo, which had some beautiful beaches for swimming and beautiful ocean parks where we saw some sea turtles on the beach. We also made the trip to Volcanoes National Park from here, which is a little over an hour away and well worth the trip (though the lava is not currently visible, the Kilauea hike was like nothing we have done before, and the walk through the lava tube was very cool).
As for the house itself, it came equipped with all we needed to make ourselves at home. We loved having breakfast on the lanai in the morning, looking at the beautiful ocean view, listening to the waves and enjoying the weather while we had our coffee. The only issue that we experienced at the whale house was the mosquitoes (there were only a few here and there, but they love me and always manage to find me); luckily they were only there in the afternoon/evening so we were safe during breakfast, and Andre provided us with some repellant that seemed to fend them off pretty well.
Andre met us at the house upon our arrival and gave us a lot of helpful information about what to do during our stay. He was always available when we needed him and provided everything we needed to have a wonderful stay.
We will definitely be recommending this place when we get back to the mainland. If you're looking for privacy and relaxation in a home away from home, with an ocean view and close enough to hear the surf, this is the place you. For the price, it would be difficult to find anything better in the area!
We only spent one night and enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage was spotless. We had everything we needed. Good place.
