About This Listing
Snowgums - half a house nestled into a fabulous garden and surrounded by the bush and the birds - you'll love Snowgums, its a gem in the mountains.
Welcome to Snowgums! Snowgum guest accommodation is half a house.
We offer clean, cosy and contemporary accommodation where, along with a sun-filled bedroom, you have a private sitting room, both of which look out onto the bushland. There's also your own private bathroom plus a simple kitchenette with fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster plus all the makings for a delicious continental breakfast. Please note there is no access to the main house kitchen. Just like a self-contained apartment, but with friends (us) nearby! If you are 3, please make sure you read about the extra bed below.
Snowgums is situated in a quiet street a little away from the hubbub of central Katoomba with the amazing Blue Mountains National Park just 100m down the road. We can provide loads of information on local walks for those interested in hiking.
So what's the breakfast? A wholesome continental breakfast comprising bread (gluten free available too) with butter and spreads (sweet and savoury), cereals including home-made muesli, preserved and fresh fruit, yoghurt and juice plus tea and coffee (plunger [french press] coffee or instant) available all day. Also, if Sue's cooking other yummies they usually make their way into your kitchenette too.
Spook is our very friendly Jack Russell dog (see his picture in the photo gallery) who loves company but who might bark on your arrival to let us know you're here! Mind you, he is getting a bit deaf these days!
Finally, on sunny mornings we recommend you sit out on the front porch to catch the morning rays while enjoying the bush surroundings and the birds. A great place for breakfast!
Snowgums is set up ideally for couples. However, there is a comfy single fold-up bed when there are two guests who don't wish to share the queen-sized bed or when there are 3 guests. The fold-up bed accommodates children or adults who weigh less than 90kg only though. For a 3rd person there is an extra charge of $25 per night but if you are two singles, a simple one-off extra $25 is charged for the use of the fold-up bed.
Because we live here as well, there is a screen allowing our guests exclusive access to the front half of the house and while we love to interact with our guests we also recognise that privacy is really important. The screen allows you to live privately but also to ask questions or speak with us as you wish.
While bushwalking is often the centre of activities here in the Blue Mountains, there are plenty of other less strenuous things to do. Sue and Bob can give you many suggestions of great things to do other than walking.
If you are a keen walker however, we can recommend many local walks. For the more adventurous who want to do the 6-foot track (a 3-day walk between Katoomba and Jenolan Caves), the track is just down the road. When you stay at Snowgums you can leave your car on the premises reducing the risk of break in etc. We have had several guests who stayed at Snowgums for 3 nights, caught the bus to Jenolan Caves and then walked the 3 days back to Snowgums for another night's stay to relax prior to furthering their trip. They really appreciated being able to leave some gear at Snowgums while away on their walk then returning to a warm welcome of a home away from home at the end of their long walk.
Snowgums is a 20 minute walk from both the train station and the centre of town. Unfortunately there is not much public transport nearby so you either need to enjoy walking or bring your own car. Most times we can pick you up or drop you at the train station and drop you at the start of a bush walk but this depends on our movements. If you have a car, we have plenty of parking space.
At Snowgums we can give you loads of ideas for great walks to do in the area as Sue has done many of the local walks herself. We can also lend you a daypack and water bottles if you don't have your own plus sunscreen to keep harmful UV rays at bay!
At Snowgums free Wi-Fi access is included.
There are plenty of books and magazines to read and board games to play and a TV and many DVDs to watch if you so desire (no extra charge).
Please keep showers short and to one a day (unless there is a dire need!) as we are on tank water.
Smoke outside only please.
We recommend washing and drying your clothes at the Katoomba Laundromat as we have no dryer but if you're staying 3 days or more we're happy to wash your clothes for you.
Please just treat this place with kindness and consideration for the environment as you would like others to treat your space (i.e. turn off lights etc when not in use, keep muddy shoes outside etc).
Snowgums is a cosy retreat just outside Katoomba centre, the perfect place to unwind and relax. It's quiet enough that one can see zillions of stars, yet still close to all the action. Access was easy with a car though perhaps would involve a fair amount of walking otherwise.
Sue and Bob were warm and welcoming hosts who made sure we had everything we needed. The small touches like leaving us an extra day pack/umbrella were lovely gestures, and the kitchenette was the best stocked I've seen for a kitchenette (olive oil and balsamic vinegar - luxury!) We enjoyed our breakfast with homemade muesli and delicious honey yoghurt, and were even lucky enough to get a taste of Sue's tasty baked goods!
It's easy to see why Snowgums is a favourite. Hope to be back soon.
Great hosts. Warm and friendly, and kind enough to let us check in early so we could leave our luggage before heading off on one of the mountain walks. The place is very comfortable and quiet, and spotlessly clean. Would definitely recommend it.
Susan and Bob were the perfect hosts! Their home is gorgeous, as is their garden and surroundings. The bed is very comfortable with very nice bedding. They offer a private and exceptionally fitted large bathroom and have a great little private den with a couch and tv, with a huge collection of dvd's, and a well equipped private kitchen area where you can prepare our own meals. The continental breakfast selection is varied and very nice.
One of the unexpected surprises is how well they educate visitors on all the various hikes and sights to be seen. The information is all very organized so you don't have to do much research beforehand if you don't want to.
The location could not be better, especially for someone with a car.
And lastly, both Susan and Bob are very interesting and generous people. I would highly recommend them and their home, in fact I will be them to friends visiting Australia next year!
Both Bob and Susan made us feel very welcome. We were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary and we were welcomed with a bottle of champagne, chocolates and a card - very touching.
The venue was in a beautiful peaceful part of Katoomba, the rooms were spotless and we had a lovely time. Thanks again Susan & Bob!!
Grace & Pierre
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Snowgums. Sue and Bob were great hosts and have put a lot of thought into making it a good B&B experience. We really appreciated having so much space and very comfortable accommodation. Breakfast was fantastic. The bushwalking recommendations were spot on and we enjoyed the chats on the balcony.
Susan and Bob have a lovely house in the middle of the nature, a truly beautiful spot just outside Katoomba.
The space at our disposal was big and clean, and the attention to details impeccable.
We particularly loved the spacious new bathroom, the breakfast in the lounge and the super comfortable bed.
We would recommend this place to anyone who wants to visit the Blue Mountains in quiet and style.
About the Host, Susan
When we travel, we like to soak in the culture of a place and get in touch with the 'real' humanity of a place, not just its tourist sites. And because we live in such a beautiful part of the world, and our house is larger than we need for just ourselves, we have decided to share this beautiful space with others. We value your privacy and ours too though so when we have guests staying with us, we love to interact with them but also love to offer privacy so don't worry, we won't be 'in your face' all the time!
The types of people we love meeting are open minded travellers especially those who love the outdoors, nature and serenity. Our dog, Spook, will welcome you too.
Sue is a keen bushwalker and can offer recommendations for walks suitable to all types of people. She is also a vipassana meditator.
Bob is a retired carpenter and draftsman and loves meeting new people and, when possible, driving them to great walks in the area.
Full of alternative folk and people from all over the world. The gateway to some of the most extraordinary bushwalks in Australia. Excellent food and some great entertainment venues too.
What a blast - take the amazing inclined train to the valley below (or for more fun, take it up the cliff!) or the gentler cable car. A great day out no matter the weather.
The Golden Stairs mark the start of the beautiful Ruined Castle walk. Also a good place to walk along the base of the cliffs east to come out at Scenic Railway.
One of Australia's most visited sites - also great bushwalks in this area - most with sign posts and really clear paths.
Great cafes and restaurants, and funky giftware, cloths, furniture and antique shops.
Great walks here and the excellent Conservation Hut (cafe/restaurant with great ice cream!). Many of these walks date back more than 100 years.
Gateway to the magnificent Grose Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in the Blue Mountains. Also find great restaurants, cafes and art galleries here plus some great gift and antique shops.
Why not broaden your spiritual experience with a 10-day meditation retreat at Dhamma Bhumi, the Blackheath Vipassana Meditation Centre?

The spectacular Jenolan Caves can be visited by less active people right through to serious spelunkers. Top off your stay at the historic Caves House Guesthouse.
