A quiet private bedroom with a big desk, two blocks from great restaurants and bars, and close to metro. Great for students/interns, conference goers, and traveling hospital residents.
This sunny, quiet room has the benefits of a recent renovation (central heat and air!), with the charm of a 100 year old D.C. rowhouse (gorgeous century-old wood floors).
The house is in a perfect location for conference attendees and also doctors/nurses/med students. The Convention Center is 10 minutes away by both metro and bus, and the hotels often used for conferences in Woodley Park and Dupont are easily accessible by a really nice express bus called the Circulator, which takes metro cards but is only $1/trip. The house is walking distance to Washington Hospital Center, Children's Hospital, and Howard University Hospital. Columbia Heights is also on the same metro line as National Airport.
The front porch overlooks a quiet street, and the backyard has a picnic table, grill, and a garden in the summer. Off-street fenced-in parking space is available by request. You'll have free wifi and there's cable tv, Netflix Instant and a dvd/blue-ray player hooked into the flatscreen in the living room.
Just 2 blocks away are all the fantastic new restaurants on 11th Street NW, like Room 11, Maple, Meridian Pint, El Chucho, Wonderland and The Coupe, a huge nearly-24 hour diner/coffee lounge. The house is a 5 minute walk from the Columbia Heights metro (green/yellow line), and 1 block from tons of bus lines. Next to the metro is a Target, Giant grocery, WSC gym, and CVS plus tons of great restaurants and bars, yoga and dance studios, and a nice plaza that has a weekly farmers' market in the summertime. Rock Creek Park is about a 20 minute walk / 10 minute run away, great for exercising or to visit the National Zoo.
I'm the homeowner and occupy the master bedroom. I have a regular day job and a business on the side, so while I'm absolutely accessible for any questions or issues that come up and occasionally to chat, I generally keep to myself to get my projects done. I've lived in DC for over ten years, currently work for the Smithsonian, and have spent years in the local art scene, so I know a ton about the city and can offer lots advice to suit the experience you're looking for, and most importantly, how to get where you're going. You'll also get to meet my mellow black cat, Amos, who will happily snuggle with you. For guests who are allergic (and I've had a handful who were, but who haven't had any problems), he can easily be kept out of your room after everything is cleaned before your arrival.
I'm happy to accommodate longer bookings (no longer than 3 months please) and offer a discounted weekly and monthly rates as shown on my listing.
Like any rental, I just ask that you treat the place as you would your own. You're welcome to cook meals and relax in any part of the house. I have no problem with guests coming home late, but I appreciate if you don't bring the party home with you.
I would highly recommend staying here. Heather is a great host, communicates well before and during the stay. The place itself is great - really clean and well equipped, and spacious and comfortable. The location is good - close to metro and buses and not too far out of the centre so if you want to get a cab home when its late it's not too expensive. Cute cat Amos is very friendly!
I stayed here for a week while visiting a conference. Although Heather was not in town during most of my stay, she was very welcoming and made sure everything was okay. Nice clean room and modern bathroom, and a friendly cat. The neighbourhood is also nice with some good places to eat and a supermarket within 5 minutes walking distance. Downtown DC is easily reached by metro or via the capital bikeshare system.
Heather was a lovely hostess and her home is very cozy and clean. The room was larger than I expected, with plenty of closet space and a huge desk for me to work at. She made sure I had everything I needed, and made me feel very welcome. Amos the cat is very cuddly and made a great buddy while I was there! Columbia Heights is a great up and coming neighborhood. Most everything I needed was within a 10min walk of Heather's house (grocery store, pharmacy, etc.) However, I wouldn't recommend walking back from the metro alone after 10pm.
Heather is an amazing host and her house is absolutely charming! I spent a little over three months there and had a wonderful time! Heather makes it really easy for you to feel at home, she was always there to answer any questions I had or just to have a chat - and Amos is a darling cat. The room itself is as nice, spacious and quiet as it looks in the pictures. As I lived with Heather during the summer, I got to enjoy her backyard which is beautiful and very inviting to lounge around. I was very sorry to leave my 'home away from home' and absolutely recommend staying with Heather! If you are looking for a great place in DC, you just found the best!
Heather & Nick offered a great, warm and clean room in an ideal neighborhood and it worked out perfectly for my needs and as a first-time ABNB user. They were great hosts and everything ran smoothly.
Convenient location, close to Columbia Heights metro and several bus lines. Comfortable house, and super friendly hosts!
I stayed with Nick and Heather for over a week in November 2013, and it could not have been more pleasant. Nick and Heather are extremely nice and wonderful people. Bed was comfy, room was spacious, and they allowed me to use the on-site washer and dryer. Convenient location and space for parking made this an excellent stay. Can't recommend it highly enough!
I'm southern California native who came to D.C. ten years ago for law school. I spent many years as a local art critic and started a business organizing photography exhibits, and now work at the Smithsonian. I love science-y things, drinking wine, and walking around the city for no particular reason.
