A peaceful rural setting where you can take walks, listen to birdsong, read books and generally lounge around in hammocks under the carob trees to your heart's content. A place just to be.... And we now have swimming pool!
This is the bedroom in the pixie hut. It has a very cute attic room upstairs with another double bed.
I have two listings, the other is at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/343732. This unique, eco-dwelling is situated in the hills just 15 minutes from the sea front of Portugal's Algarve coast. Made using ancient building techniques using lime, reeds and thatch it blends in perfectly with its natural surroundings of fruit trees, hills and birdlife - the perfect spot for a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. You are very close to nature here with owls, geckos, Golden Oriols, wood peckers and more. You definitely need a car to get around the Algarve.
Anyone under the age of 5 is free but having said that I should warn you that our environment is rather wild and so having small children here requires constant vigilance. On top of that the pixie house has a small spiral staircase, which is irresistible for small (email hidden)t the best recipe for a restful holiday. But then again, if you have under 5's with you I don't imagine anywhere is all that restful ;)
The Pixie Hut sits 2m apart from another wooden cabin (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/343732) with which it shares the kitchen & bathroom facilities so please be aware that there could be other people sharing your environment.
Please print the driving instructions rather than the map as they are far more reliable and also have a GPS co-ordinates since the roads are not exactly signposted in this rural area!
It sleeps 4 people in 2 separate rooms, but the rooms are connected by a spiral staircase so they're not exactly private. This might suit a family better, or alternatively, two very friendly couples!
We also have a 2nd wooden dwelling right next door, which accommodates 2 or 3 people in one open plan space. If needed we can add a camp bed or mattress.
The style of accommodation is SMALL, clean and simple, with wooden furniture, antiques, artwork, books and a few curiosities from my travels to create a cosy, interesting ambient.
If you fancy a night camping down at the river we have a 3 man tent which you can borrow,
What else......I think that's everything. But if there's something I've forgotten or something you need please just ask and I imagine most requests can be fulfilled.
Internet & Wi-Fi
The signal doesn't quite reach down to the Pixie Hut so if you'd like to check your mail come up to our porch and go online there. At night you're welcome to come inside.
The shower block is a short walk through the garden. This is gas powered so its always hot. We have a small gym as well for the worthiest of our visitors! There is a washing machine just outside which you can use if needed. Please bring your own beach towels as our towels are only for the shower.
We have a second (solar) shower and toilet attached to the back of the new kitchen and they are only a couple of meters away from your cabin. Be warned though that on a cloudy day of course, the shower won't be warm.
There is a large, wooden kitchen equipped very BASICALLY with a fridge, a cooker/oven and wash basin as well as storage for food and utensils & plates. There is also an out door bbq area for the intrepid visitor. You will need to buy your own food, drink, and all the things you usually require for living. We provide bathroom towels for you and dishtowels for the kitchen. Just bring your own beach towels.
Both showers and kitchen facilities are shared with the other cabin.
Art & Culture:
Fonte da Estrela is owned by a sculptor so there are studio facilities available on request. For the painters the landscape is perfect for water colour in autumn and spring and in the summer, a stronger palette of oils will surely keep you occupied. We can send you off in the direction of a number of bijoux art galleries showing the work of new and emerging artists as well as some by the more established. We also have an art trail which will take you to the studios of individual artists living and working here in the Algarve.
If painting or drawing is something you'd like to do then I can arrange to have a professional artist to come and teach for a morning or a day. POA.
There are a number of yoga teachers and studios around. Just ask and I'll show you the schedules. A class costs 10 euros less if more than ten sessions are purchased in one go.
There is good surfing to be had during the summer and winter as well as kite surfing and body boarding. Equipment can be hired at the sea front. There are boats to be hired and fishing trips to go on as well as diving. Also journeys to local islands and secret beaches can be arranged.
Just 10mins drive away there is a beautiful river with pools and small rapids and idyllic picnic spots. Slightly further away are the nearest beaches, and the excellent, public swimming pools in Loulé. Aside from that we overlook a natural reserve so there are plenty of good walking, cycling, painting and bird-spotting opportunities. Horse riding can also be arranged.
Food & Sight Seeing:
There are a good many, affordable local restaurants as well as some very up market dining experiences to be had in the area. (See: (website hidden)_Algarve.html). If you want self catering then the local grocer is just down the road or the nearest large supermarket in Loulè which is 15 minutes away. And on Saturdays there is a terrific gypsy market as well as food and veg market in the town. With its rich past the Algarve has many historic towns, castles, ruins, Roman burial grounds and natural sights to visit along the coast.
Music: During the summer the Algarve is rife with music festivals and local towns compete with each other to hold their own festivals. There's a great jazz festival in July and concerts throughout summer with international artists as well as local bands and musicians playing. Ask for more details when you know the dates of your holiday.
Faro airport is 20 mins away, and the nearest train station is 15 mins away in Loulé. Local buses are cheap but not very reliable. You can however catch a national bus which are very reliable and cheap to take you to Spain or the beautiful, cultural city of Lisbon for day trips. Having a car here is essential! In dire stratits you can hire bikes but
Interaction with Guests
I live a stones throw away from the cabins but aside from being available for questions or help of any kind I try to respect the privacy of my guests, leaving them to do their own thing.
The surrounding countryside is tranquil and full of birds with a small river about a 20 minute walk away.
Public transport is not very efficient where we are for the needs of a tourist who wants to go to the beach and so on. its more for locals travelling between the hill towns. Thats why a car is really necessary here.
Please warn us if your arrival or departure is going to be very late so that we don't fall asleep and forget about you if you don't arrive at normal check in time which is after 3pm. Check out is before noon so we can prepare the space for new arrivals. During the summer months it is crucial that you be very careful with cigarettes, candles and leaving glasses outside. Bush fire is a very present and real danger in the Algarve and to be taken seriously at all times. Only use the BBQ area provided. Take care when walking on narrow tracks because although they move slowly heavy farm vehicles also use them. Please remove your shoes on entering the lodge and keep your shoes in the place provided especially during winter because it can get quite muddy. Please switch off all lights and heating when possible to save energy. Please use water with the awareness that it is a scarce commodity in the Algarve during summer. When washing up its good to throw the grey water on nearby plants as much as is possible to avoid wastage. We like to recycle our rubbish so please use the bins provided which are marked up to make it easy for you. Thank you.
Enjoy the silence and beauty of nature in the Algarve @ Toin's peaceful place. Enjoy the sun, but don't forget to look at the sky at night! It's like magic!! Loved it a lot!
We felt more than welcome at a place as we arrived really late at night and the family patiently waited for us and helped us to find the place in the dark, which was not easy. All the stay was very pleasant even for the couple spoiled by constantly heated apartment :-) I loved the hut and the gardens and was able to discover a hidden piece of art among the branches or on the ground every day. A heaven for an art lover and an amateur photographer. The place must be very refreshing and a great experience in summer. I also loved the family philosophy and life style which resonated with mine a lot. Thank you Toin for being patient with us in the beginning and greetings to Gail and Humberto.
We really enjoyed our time in the Pixie Hut. It's a great place with lots of nature around. Also it is a good location to discover the beautiful places of the Algarve. Toin patiently answered all the questions we had and she always was very kind, understanding and helpful. We would highly recommend staying there (not only because soon there will be a pool)! :)
This place is paradise! We came to Portugal looking for calm and unique base during our 2 weeks vacation. Toin's place offered exactly that... The whole property, set in the mountains nearby the beautiful coast, feels like home and Toin and her family are very warm hearted hosts. We had a fantastic time and sure will be back...
Toin's Pixie Hut is the perfect choice for everyone who is looking for a quite, beautiful, and very natural place to be. Toin is an extremely lovely host, I can only recommend staying there!
