Chic Hyde Park Designer Guesthouse

House - Entire home/apt · Avenue, Austin, TX 78751, United States

The Space

Our guesthouse was designed by renowned Austin architect Tim Cuppett. The interior, designed by Cravotta Interiors has a modern-eclectic feel. Extremely clean and well-appointed, the house is located in one of Austin's oldest and most beloved neighborhoods - Hyde Park. Directly north of the University of Texas at Austin, our cozy casita is a free-standing structure located directly behind our house, separated by an amazing 300 year old Burr Oak tree.

The kitchenette has a 2-burner stove, microwave, and Nespresso espresso machine with coffee pods and a French Press as well as a mini-refrigerator/freezer. It's stocked with hand-made Italian dish-ware, glasses, and flatware.

The bedroom offers a beautiful hand-carved bed with TempurPedic mattress and fine linens. Warning...this bed is so comfortable you may never be able to sleep on anything else! The bedroom also includes a sleeping loft with a comfortable twin mattress. Although not ideal, the living room sofa can sleep one adult as well.

You simply won't find another property like this. The closest thing that compares is the chic and trendy Hotel San Jose just south of downtown. We've stayed there many times. And though we've enjoyed our stay, Casa Cravotta is bigger, more finely detailed, more comfortable, and more private, for significantly less money.

  • Great accommodations and great location. Although we did not meet Mark & Monica, they did check in with us to make sure we had everything we needed. Will definitely stay here again1

  • The guesthouse is amazing! The hosts keep to themselves mostly which is fine. Tranquil, very clean and incredibly decorated! The towels, linens and pillows were soft and perfect. Not to mention the fantastic mattress that instantly put us to sleep. There is a cute coffee shop within walking distance (5-10min). The neighborhood is lovely and quiet but also within 10-15 min of downtown. We would definitely stay at this place again and would highly recommend to anyone wanting to visit a real Austin neighborhood!

  • We definitely enjoyed our stay in the guesthouse. It was spacious enough for 2 people and very nicely furnished. (Because there are some breakable art pieces, this rental would probably not be ideal for small children.) The kitchen was quite small, but functional, and we mainly just used the fridge, tea kettle, and microwave. We found the photos to be representative of the apartment, but the bathroom could have been cleaner and more updated (mold/mildew on shower doors and shower stall was a pretty cramped). The delicious coffee and free wifi were a welcome bonus, and we loved the Hyde Park location, which was close to the 7 bus and a Zipcar rental.

Unfortunately, we never had a chance to meet our hosts, but Mark was very responsive via email, and kindly allowed us to check in earlier and leave later. Personally, I felt a bit awkward walking past the main house through the yard to the guesthouse without ever meeting them, since they were home while we were there. However, there were very respectful of our privacy and never intruded, so guests who want lots of privacy will appreciate that in this space. One thing to note is that the apartment has tons of full length windows (great light!), but we mainly kept the blinds shut since they face right into the main house. The closet is in the living room, so when dressing, you have to walk past the glass front door to get to the bedroom. It was not a big deal for us, but it may be for others.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend staying here for the quiet location and nice neighborhood.

  • Lovely cozy and well appointed cottage. Stayed here with my daughter (student at UT) and we loved it.

Very quiet neighborhood, close to UT and the main bus lines and some cute restaurants. Cozy bed and very clean and beautifully detailed rooms.

Fun cruiser bicycles with locks that we borrowed to ride to brunch.

I have recommended this listing to the UT Parent's Community and we would love to stay here again in the future.

  • What a wonderful little guest house. I felt very much at home. You thought of all the things one or two travelers might need during a stay. The location is perfect; I could walk to Quacks for coffee, shop at the mmaarket and had dinner at Julios one night.

  • Our stay at Mark and Monica's place was really great.
Everything was easy and straight forward; from the correspondence to the check in - Mike and Monica took good care of us and we can nothing but recommend their little guest house. Even though we did not get a chance to meet, our hosts checked in on us every now and then to make sure everything was alright.

Big ups for the wifi, nespresso coffee and the ice cold beer in the fridge.

Only minor complaint I have is that the sofa is not meant for sleeping. My colleague did manage to sleep on it, but it sure wasn't as good as the queen sized bed and extra mattress in the bed room. So I would say this place is not for groups of three - but we kind of knew that at the time of booking.

Again, we really enjoyed our stay in this really quiet neighborhood. It comes highly recommended.

  • Beautiful, quiet, serene environment tastefully decorated. We enjoyed our time at the guesthouse. Mark and Monica are great hosts and very responsive to questions. The location is very close to great eating and coffee establishments and Hyde Park is a beautiful part of Austin.

  • A clean, contemporary space with good amenities. Lovely backyard space that can serve as a living room, in addition to the living area inside the loft. The hosts were cordial and professional. We very much enjoyed our stay!

  • We had an excellent stay at Mark and Monica's guesthouse. Mark was very attentive to our needs and was extremely responsive to all requests.
Location-wise it's a quick (5-10 min) drive to downtown, yet felt like tranquil suburbia (so quiet!). The guesthouse was super-clean and well equipped with a small kitchenette with the essentials.
Overall, a great first experience with airbnb.. would highly recommend to anyone else looking for a base to explore Austin and surrounds.
