Where do I begin? I had such a magical time here I want to go back already! Kali and Sonja were amazing hosts. They were kind and helpful and gave us the insiders scoop in Santa Fe ( we also got an intense ping pong lesson!) This is an experience everyone should have! Experience of a life time!
Staying at the Peaceful Retreat was a truly wonderful experience! Kali and Sonja were incredibly kind and warm, and their location is like a little slice of heaven surrounded by so much beautiful land and nature. The hike up to the Shrine is so wonderful and the views are spectacular. Really the best way to describe the experience is Peaceful :) Can't thank you both enough for opening your Earth Home to us for a couple days. We know where we are staying the next time we come to Santa Fe!
This place is lovely! Kali and Sonja are kind and friendly and accommodating. The casita is cute and Eco-friendly and I was impressed to learn that Kali had built all the houses on that land himself, including those of most of his neighbors. If you're looking to be close to Santa Fe, this is a bit out of the way and hard to get to, at least 45 minutes away. There's a 6 mile dirt road to get to the house on which you have to drive slow, and we got lost getting there the first day (but after that it was easy) and while I'm sure it was an anomaly that it rained so much, the dirt road turned to mud and our car got stuck. It was very difficult for me to see at night so we had to leave Santa Fe at 6:30 to make it back before it was too dark to drive. But for some people, especially those who plan on staying on the land most of the time, these wouldn't be concerns. The land is beautiful, the views are stunning, the house is cozy, the hosts are great, and there's even a little temple 10 min walk from the casita.
We enjoyed The peacefulness of our 2 night stay. It's amazing how many adventures are all around the property. Really cool hikes, very clean and nice place. They let us bring our small dog, and when it didn't agree with their dog they kept there's away from us the rest of the time. The hosts are very respectful and accommodating.
I had an amazing time at the casita- it's the perfect place to get away from the noisy busy world and reconnect with yourself. The pictures and description are exactly as they appear, if not even more cozy. A fully stocked little house, with all the comforts of home- a kitchen, gas stove, full lights electricity (no internet or phone service, though that's not a bad thing) cozy bed, shower etc.
It's a little bit rustic, and not for those looking for some sort of 5-star experience. For the rest of us that want to sit on a back patio and listen to the wind in the trees and marvel at the stars, it's enough to inspire you to seriously consider off-the-grid living!
I spent 6 days here by myself, and every day on my way out, I would see Kali and we'd chat and he'd give me a great little tip of a local secret to check out. They are incredibly gracious hosts, who share their land with merry travelers. If you are into Yoga and/or meditation, it would be an incredibly rare treat, as they've built a Tibetan meditation cave into the existing rock at the top of the mesa. The next time I go to New Mexico or the Santa Fe area, I will definitely be coming back to life on the mesa at Kali & Sonja's. Living like the camels :)
