Our listing, "One Block," is a private apartment on the ground floor of a charming Victorian-style cottage, just a block from Golden Gate Park.
Walking distance to all of the park's major attractions, including the California Academy of Sciences, Steinhart Aquarium, De Young Art Museum, Japanese Tea Gardens, and Conservatory of Flowers. Dozens of wonderful ethnic restaurants are just a few blocks away: Thai, Burmese, Russian, Turkish, Vietnamese, and more! Grocery store and bike rental shop within two blocks. Close to USF and UCSF. Several public transit routes are nearby for easy access to the whole city.
Bedroom has a queen bed, and the living room has a sleeper futon, making the apartment perfect for a couple or small family. Fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove, dishwasher, microwave, and small breakfast table. One bathroom (tub and shower), washer and dryer. Huge plasma TV with cable, and WiFi. All linens are provided (sheets, towels, blankets, etc.)
The inner Richmond is a charming and diverse neighborhood, known for great Asian food. There are bars on Clement St. and Geary Blvd., but it is generally quiet at night. A great place to relax after a busy day seeing the city! Nearby neighborhoods such as the lower Haight, have active nightlife. You can easily walk or take public transit to and from the apartment in the evening.
We live in the upstairs flat and have been in San Francisco since 1966. We have raised two children in the city, and are happy to help you find your way around. If you want to experience San Francisco like a local, this is the place for you! Nearby restaurants are affordable and family-friendly. Having breakfast and coffee in our apartment, and getting basics at the grocery store, will make your trip easier and more affordable.
Parking anywhere in San Francisco can be difficult, but it is better in our neighborhood than in most. We recommend against renting a car, as you do not need one within the city. However if you do rent a car, you can usually find free street parking within a reasonable distance around our house.
We are kid-friendly, and this is a great location for children-- centrally located and convenient, but quiet at night. A new Pack'n'Play (meets new 2012 safety standards) is available, as well as a comfortable tatami foam mat for an extra person. Pets are negotiable.
There is a small fenced backyard, accessible from the back door in the kitchen. It is not particularly fancy, but some guests have found it very nice to have a place where small children can go outside without traffic concerns.
If you have questions, please feel free to ask. We look forward to your visit!
No loud noise after 11:00 pm.
Pets are negotiable.
The host met us when we arrived although we were later than we expected due to busy bay area traffic. He was pretty casual, made us feel welcome. He and his wife live upstairs, we did not see them again during our stay. We also got the feeling that they did not want to be bothered much, which was fine with us. The apartment was clean. The apartment description was pretty accurate although it has been in use for some time and could use some updating. It is near golden gate park, which worked fine for us, since we have two young kids we were interested in California academy of science and the playgrounds nearby. It is some distance from fisherman's wharf, exploratorium and nearby touristy areas near downtown. We were able to find parking (with some search) nearby. The area is also generally cooler than downtown and heating was necessary in June. One annoying thing was that the heater would turn itself down periodically. I understand that the host does not want it to be on while guests are out but there needs to be a better solution than automatically turning it off to 60s. The apartment is ground level and was pretty cool. The promised exploratorium tickets were not available. One glitch, we are getting messages from Airbnb saying that we owe Airbnb $59. We paid the apartment fee full, so we have no idea what this is about. The host told us that he got paid in full. Our emails to Airbnb did not receive a response.
I told Cagla and her husband upon arrival that if there were any questions during their visit, they should simply come up the front steps, knock on the door, and ask me. They never did. So I am bewildered by the assertion that my wife and I "did not want to be bothered much."
The apartment was clean and tidy when they arrived. Not so much when they left. There were bits of paper strewn about, one section of the futon was left standing on end, and a number of vases had been moved but not returned to where they belonged. In addition, someone chipped one of the vases. Cagla offered to pay for it. I said she didn't need to do so.
My wife described the apartment as being "left in a mess." I was more charitable in the review that I wrote.
I have no idea what Cagla had in mind in saying the apartment "could use some updating." Obviously it's not hyper-modern, with huge windows and granite counter tops. But it does have an up-to-date big screen television, a full size washer and dryer, and a high-end dishwasher.
The apartment is not merely "near" Golden Gate Park. It is one block from the park, a two minute walk..
Fisherman's wharf and some other tourist attractions are, indeed, "some distance away." However, it's not possible to be close to everything, even in a city as small as San Francisco. And we are very close to most of the major attractions in Golden Gate Park.
June is not a warm month in San Francisco. A cool, gray fog rolls in off the ocean with some frequency. Turning the heat on is often necessary as a result. It's a simple matter of adjusting the thermostat. Which our guests normally do as they see fit. They ask how it works if they can't figure it out. I'm miffed that Cagla didn't.
Hosts have no control over how Airbnb bills guests.. But I contacted Airbnb more than once on Cagla's behalf. Unfortunately, I didn't get a simple explanation as to the $59 that she seems to believe was billed incorrectly. However, I did eventually receive an email from Airbnb saying the matter had been resolved.
One last thought. Cagla, at one point, sent me a message saying they had enjoyed their stay, and she expressed her thanks. Which leaves me puzzled and annoyed by her review.
We stayed in the apartment a couple of weeks with our kids, a 4-year-old and an 8 months baby. We found the apartment suitable to our needs; the kitchen was fully equipped, washer and dryer modern and efficient, everything functioned well and there was enough space for the four of us.
The area was very quiet and calm, close to two grocery stores, great restaurants, bus lines and the park of course. All appreciated by parents to young ones.
And David is a great host.
My mom, brother and I stayed at David's place for more than a month and it was a our home in SF. It had pretty much everything at home: two kinds of coffee maker, grind, oven, microwave, toaster and all kinds of cookware you need (i was so suprised!). We loved the location as well: safe and close to golden gate park. Good transportation around the house could bring us everywhere in SF without transfer: downtown, ocean beach, sunset, castro, mission, nopa, nobhill, japantown, china town and so on! The part I loved most was how clean the place can be! We got cleaning lady service once a week :) We felt so comfortable in his place and will definitely come back and stay here again! It is like our second home ;)
We spent two wonderful months in David’s apartment. The place is spacious, cozy and very comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped and it helped a lot having a washing and dryer machine at home. The location is excellent! Two blocks from the amazing Golden Gate Park with all the museums, gardens, lakes, trails, etc. in the convenient Richmond District, with lots of restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, etc. in walking distance. Very quiet neighborhood with easy access to public transportation. David was most helpful during our stay. Excellent place to stay while in San Francisco!
Very nice and welcoming spot. Hard to beat location and the ground-floor unit was very accomodating and comfortable. All facilities + necessities in order and easypeasy access to grocery, GG park, eateries ++.
We had a comfortable stay in David's suite - lots of space, fully-equipped kitchen, and a great Golden Gate Park location. The main bed was very comfortable and the pull-out in the living room worked well for our kids. We enjoyed starting each day in the park, and explored the Richmond district's offerings - great restaurants and shops (Green Apple Books!) on Clement, Cinderella Bakery just around the corner on Balboa. Public transportation is easily accessible both on Fulton and Geary. David and Barbara were easy to deal with and have provided plenty of information in the suite. We had a great stay and would stay here again.
This was a beautiful place. Tastefully done, great attention to detail, and very convenient. David was helpful and welcoming. One of my favorite AirBnBs I've stayed in.
About the Host, David
My wife and I came to San Francisco in 1966, and have been here ever since. I am a "retired" journalist and avid cyclist. She was a long-time civil servant. We have raised two children in the city and now have grandchildren who come to visit. We are happy to help you discover San Francisco.
Our house was built in 1907, and we have owned it for roughly 30 years. We live in the upstairs flat. We enjoy having the downstairs apartment available for friends, family, and Airbnb travelers.
Our neighborhood is centrally located and convenient, but also quiet and safe. This is a great place to stay, especially with children.
