Laura's place was very nice in several ways. It was a short walk to the beach which was my main mission on this trip. Howler monkeys could be heard very close by. We loved that. Several times we searched them out an got some pretty good pictures of them. There was no internet but the Lodge across the street had internet and Jim, the proprietor, was very receptive to us hanging out there when we needed to connect. The house was actually more like a rustic cabin in many ways. I liked it cause I like camping but it did take some getting used too. I was there with my sister for a week and by the end of that time I was feeling more comfortable. One not so pleasant thing was that they had recently sprayed for ants so everyday there were hundred of freshly deceased ants on the floor and dining table. It was a bit gross. The kitchen was adequate but, very minimally stocked. There were no basic condiments which I would have expected in a house. The coffee pot was broken as was the blender. We made due though and it didn't really damper our overall time there. Cindy, who manages the place, was delightful. We had a nice time getting to know her. I would recommend the place but would like to see a little more effort put in to make the place a bit more user friendly. Another hammock outside would be great or at least some more comfortable seating of some kind.
Being our first time in Costa Rica we rented El Tejao house in Cabuya for a month. Due to misfortunes of the airline companies we were changed our flight schedule with arrival 2 days later. We had an agreement with the host to stay 2 extra nights compensating those lost days paying a total of 31 nights. Once checked in, all seemed in place until a few days later and ending all up in a real disaster to our surprise. On this very same note it is important to mention that the house is not owned by local people and therefore this embarrassing and undesired episode has not affected the rest of our experience in Costa Rica as ticos (they way local people call themselves in a friendly way) are beautiful and honest people that will make the impossible to help you out. The house is located among a nice jungle near from Cabo Blanco National Park and steps from the beach. It has the basics to spend no more than 3 days and it is a bit far away from main villages like Montezuma and Cobano for you might consider renting a bike or a quad. The beach is rocky as Costa Rica but nice to do beach-coming at low tide or go kayaking to the Island of Cabuya. Concerning the inside of the house, we had some issues with the cleanliness of the place for a start. A few days later the fridge stopped working and it was completely useless spending a full month with no fridge. Another issue turned up with the tap from the toilet with constant leaking. Not to mention the termites all over the house. All in all, we spent the whole month struggling to fix these issues as the owners and managers did not bother much. We tried to forget and enjoy the most until 2 days before our term was due, the host and manager sent us a warning message informing our term was due and we had to leave… which ended up involving threats with the police and we were kicked out of the house stating we had caused too much problem to them already, considering we were the customers who had to go through all this and they the owners which did absolutely nothing to solve the problems during the whole month completely ruining our stay. In all, a nice country house but unfortunately not well maintained and certainly NOT in good shape for rental and not good hosts!. Owners live in San Jose City and manager of the house not fully dedicated as caretaker. It takes too long for them to act if anything happens and the lack of communication is self evident. Please note NO telephone listed on amenities. For the same price anyone can find a house better maintained right on the beach and with internet, barbecue and most certainly a fridge that works well.
Wildlife, nature, and relaxation is what we got at this wonderful house! It's a nicely designed place with all the basic amenities that we needed for a very peaceful vacation. We mostly laid in the hammocks and just let nature come to our door, with mangoes and limes all over the property. Packs of howler monkeys in the trees welcomed us everyday and were just as curious about us as we were to them. Cabuya is a simple little town with very friendly locals, a few grocery stores and a great national park within walking distance. The beach is rocky, but the was water was amazingly warm and we had the beach all to ourselves for miles, except for the local wildlife. We've already recommended this house to friends and would definitely come back again! Pura Vida!!
