The space
COVID-19 Update: We are able to accept some bookings, but guests must be able to follow the guidelines published by the Irish government. This includes the need to self isolate for 14 days if you are travelling from outside of the island of Ireland. Guests should note that tourist activities will be permitted in Ireland from 20 July. Other bookings before then for reasons other than tourism may still be possible.

We are putting in place extra cleaning, and increasing the time between bookings to ensure the Earl's Bungalow remains a safe space for guests and hosts.

The Earl’s Bungalow is a large four double bedroomed house set in over 200 acres of private woodland and gardens and benefitting from panoramic views of the ruins of Castle Bernard.

The house was fully refurbished to a high standard in 2015. It incorporates a number of antiques and memorabilia from previous Earls of Bandon.

Three bedrooms have double beds two of which are four posters and are super king size, the other is a standard double. One bedroom can be set up either with two singles, or one super king bed - guests may specify in their booking. Each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom, three of the four have baths in addition to showers. All the bedrooms have black out curtains in order to ensure that you sleep well during your stay. Two cots are available for young children.

The Fishing Room:
Decorated with fly fishing paraphernalia, this room has a super king sized four poster canopy bed and dual aspect views of the ruins of Castle Bernard. It is also equipped with Lord Bandon's original desk, a chaise longue, a dressing table and a telescope for taking in the views. Its ensuite bathroom includes a cast iron bath with separate shower attachment and heated towel rail.

Lady Bandon’s Birdoir:
Decorated with cheerful song birds and pictures of the matriarchs of the Bernard family, this room also boasts a four poster super king sized canopy bed. It benefits from a separate sitting room with a writing desk, silk rug and sofas from which you can enjoy stunning views of the castle. The birdoir also has the largest of the ensuite bathrooms featuring an extra large walk-in rainfall shower, heated towel rail, an antique washstand and a full size double ended roll-top claw footed bath.

The Hunting Room:
With slightly tongue in cheek hunting themed wall paper, this room has gorgeous mahogany furniture with spacious wardrobe, dressing table and armchair. This room is arranged with two single beds but can also be offered with one super king. It also has a huge ensuite bathroom with a heated towel rail and luxurious claw footed roll top cast iron bath (with shower attachment).

The Oriental Room:
Themed to reflect Lord Bandon’s long Air Force service in East Asia, this room also has spectacular views of the castle and grounds, as well as separate front and back entrances, kitchen and walk-in shower room with heated towel rail. It also comes with a desk, rug, armchair and dining table. It has a standard double bed.

Kitchen:
A large modern kitchen with granite worktops, triple oven and four hob range style cooker, separate fridge freezer, microwave and dishwasher is ideal for cooking sumptuous food for all your party.

Dining room:
With a table which easily seats twelve, this room was designed for entertaining and like most other rooms in the bungalow has large windows overlooking the castle and grounds.

Drawing room:
The large drawing room is warmed by a wood burning stove which heats the whole house through a linked radiator system in each room (wood is provided). Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the castle and grounds from the 4 metre picture window. It has comfy sofas to seat eight, a silk rug by the fire and a large selection of books and board games for guests to enjoy.

A 32 inch television and DVD player are provided together with a large range of DVDs. Unfortunately, due to the semi-rural location of Castle Bernard, the television signal can on rare occasions be somewhat unclear so we recommend having a back up plan of viewing any important sports matches in one of the friendly local bars in Bandon if this is a key part of your holiday plans.

High speed wireless internet is provided throughout the house.

Central heating and hot water is powered by the wood burning stove, or by an oil fired boiler. Washing machines and tumble driers are available for guest use in the garage.

Backdoors from the living room and sunroom provide easy access to a patio and picnic table overlooking the castle. From there visitors are welcome to enjoy the totally private grounds of the Castle Bernard estate. We provide wellington boots in a range of sizes in case it is wet.

The Grounds:
Visitors to the Earl’s Bungalow can enjoy walks in more than 200 acres of gardens and woodland which surround the ruins of Castle Bernard. Many specimen trees and shrubs thrive including a great collection of colourful rhododendrons, an atmospheric laurel walk around the lake, and a bamboo forest planted in Victorian times which transports you from West Cork into the tropics.

Golfers can enjoy the Bandon Golf Club which forms part of the grounds of the estate. Salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing can be arranged on the River Bandon which runs through the estate, and rough shooting may be possible if arranged in advance.

Guest access
Guests can access the whole house, and have the use of 200 acres of private grounds.

Other things to note
Guests with allergies should be aware that there are cats and dogs in the local area.

Children's cots, highchairs and toys are also available and can be made ready if you give us a little notice.
