About This Listing
A cosy 2 bedroom rural cottage, close to Knock Airport with all modern conveniences including WiFi. Two lovely donkeys will welcome you to the cottage!
Come in, have a "cuppa" and enjoy some scones or brown bread. Our welcome basket includes some of "Patti's Homemade Jams" straight from her kitchen in Co. Mayo.
Are you looking for a quiet, relaxing break in the countryside in the West of Ireland? Rustic, but with all modern conveniences? Then look no further!!
Frank's Cottage is a traditionally styled cottage but modernised to make your stay comfortable and welcoming! The sitting room is the heart of this home with wood panelled high ceilings and the wood burning stove - heated with turf from our own bog! You enter the smaller of the two bedrooms from here - with its two single beds this room still maintains the traditional feel. From the sitting room you enter the modern country kitchen with seating for 6 and a fully equipped kitchen. While having your breakfast, you can look out into the fields and watch the donkeys playing! The Double bedroom is accessed through the kitchen and this is a large room with plenty of wardrobe space and room for an extra single bed or toddler bed (upon request). The utility room connects the kitchen with both the back door and the large shower room (with electric shower). There is a washer/dryer in the utility room as well as cleaning supplies.
The cottage is located in a quiet, rural area, 5 miles from the neighbouring towns of Charlestown and Ballaghaderreen. Sometimes the only noise is the sound of farm animals and birds chirping!
There is no public transit within walking distance, so a car is a very good idea.
One of the best loved aspects about Frank's Cottage are the two very friendly donkeys who are sure to give you a big, warm welcome!
We normally try to greet our guests but because our check in is flexible we may not always be home ( or awake!) when guests arrive. We will have as much or as little contact depending on what each guests want! We live next door to the property
We love our pets and do try to facilitate guests who wish to bring their pets on their holiday. We will consider your pets, as long as you agree that they do not enter the bedrooms and are housetrained. Please let us know that you would like to bring a pet. An extra cleaning fee of €25 per week or €5 per night is added to cover the cost of cleaning, as we want to make sure that the cottage is pet hair/smell free for our next guests who may or may not be pet lovers!

*Guests staying 3-5 nights maybe given a discount off the nightly rate.

Interaction with Guests
We normally try to greet our guests but because our check in is flexible we may not always be home ( or awake!) when guests arrive. We tend to give guests their privacy but are available via email and mobile phone for any assistance.
I love the peace and quiet! There is a small river at the back of the house and lots of fields where the donkeys and horse graze.
The Bus Eireann bus stops in Carracastle village twice a day, but in Ballaghaderreen and Charlestown, which are each 8km away, the bus is more regular.

Wonderful place to stay. Not the easiest to find, but Frank was happy to meet us in town and lead us to the cottage. very nice if you want some time away from the rush of the world. The two donkeys, the horse, all the sheep and the cat were very friendly as well! Clean and quiet place to stay.
Our stay at Franks Cottage was absolutely perfect.
We were welcomed by Judy's Husband Seamus as we arrived at an odd time of the day, with an apology from Judy for not being there to welcome us. This was not a problem as we caught up with her later.
Seamus gave us a guided tour and some family history on this beautifully renovated and decorated cottage. We were shown the central heating and the beautiful stove fire all filled and ready for us to use along with extra peat logs if needed. We had lovely weather and sadly did not get to use the fire which we were sure would have been lovely to cuddle up in front of.
Judy had a welcome basket for us, a very nice touch and everything described in the listing was accurate. The cottage was extemely clean and all linen, bedding, towels were of a high quality.
We had great sleeps on the comfy bed and there was plenty of room for us to spread our luggage out in the spare room.
When not out exploring Ireland, we spent our time feeding carrots to Sugar and Chocolate Chip the two Donkey's across the road and Billy the horse in the back paddock. We had great country walks which Judy had provided fluoro saftey vests for us to wear if we wanted. On our walks we were picked up by the three very friendly village dogs who trotted along with us and were lots of fun and it was also really nice to meet the neighbours who chatted to us as we passed by.
Ballaghaderreen was 12min drive from the cottage where you could pick up groceries. Sligo,Westport, Carrick on Shannon and Kilbeggan were great towns to visit steeped in history with lots of nice eating places and easily driveable taking one to one and a half hours. We would highly recommend the Voya Seaweed Baths in Sligo as a memorable experience, so relaxing.
We had a lovely catch up with Judy during our stay. It was really nice for us to meet her as we could thank her in person for all her help in making our stay in Central Ireland a very memorable one.
We would highly recommend Franks Cottage to anyone one wanting a peaceful country stay in a gorgeous Irish cottage with two very accommodating, lovely Hosts, who were available if needed.
Thanks so much Judy and Seamus for sharing your time and cottage with us. If we are lucky enough to return to your part of the world again, we would love to come and stay with you and all the farm animals.
Cottage ready for guests
The cottage was wonderful. The directions we received were spot on and we had no trouble finding it. We had a lovely time and we were able to completely relax. If we are ever back in that area we will definitely try to stay there again. My husband loved the donkeys!
We had a wonderful welcome basket waiting for us at Franks Cottage (with fresh scones, jam, coffee and tea) and supplies to make a peat fire for several nights. The cottage was spacious, clean, and well-equipped. It is located in a relaxing country setting with plenty of resident animals (if you're missing your own pets : ). We really enjoyed our stay at Franks Cottage and would recommend it to others who want a quiet place in the country to relax or use as a home base for exploring the area.
We only met the hosts when we had to ask why the wi fi was not working. It did not work the whole time we were at the cottage. The cottage was okay. Not really as described. Could do with a few more home inclusions, which were promised, but not there. It was okay for the price. We simply thought the property was oversold.
Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with the provisions. We included a welcome basket with fresh scones, jam tea and coffee and starter items of toilet roll, dish cleaning fluid etc which is customary for a self catering home. We are not sure what items you expected but did not get but welcome your feedback. The wifi appeared to be down in the area the few days you were with us and this was a fault of the wifi provider. Because of the rural area we only have access to one wifi provider and normally it is quite sufficient. We do say in our information pack that we work full time but are available by phone, email or in person should any problems arise. We hope you enjoyed your holiday and thanks again for booking with us!
About the Host, Judy
Hello and welcome Franks Cottage. Running the cottage is a family affair. I work full time and between all of us we keep the holiday home running!!
This cottage is part of Seamus' family homeplace and has been in his family for over 200 years!! We decided to use it as a holiday home to generate income to put our children through college.
I've added a few things to the cottage that I couldn't live without - WiFi, Books, warm fire and Tv/Dvd!!
