Capitol Hill Apt Steps from Metro

Apartment - Entire home/apt · 14th Street Southeast, Washington, DC 20003, United States

This apartment features all the essentials for your stay in a fantastic location convenient to transit, groceries, and the sites.

The Space

This one-bedroom suite in a private Capitol Hill home has its own entrance, a full kitchen and bath, access to shared laundry and a yard/patio.

We are unbelievably convenient to transit and DC attractions. Airbnb maps our address a block too far to the north. We are located directly across 14th Street from the Potomac Metro station entrance, just north of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Your hosts are a young family that has lived in the house for more than a decade. We totally respect your space and privacy, but are also happy to get to know you and share advice on touring DC with or without children.

Our apartment is simple but sleeps 4 adults/teens comfortably in a queen-size bed and full-size (double) living room futon. There is a full-size air mattress and portable crib (pack and play) for your use as well.

Limit 4 adult guests: We will not approve reservations for more than 4 adults. We list "sleeps 6" in order to accommodate families with children. It is a small apartment and 6 adults would be tripping over each other. (No need to list infants as an extra guest.

Privacy consideration: Please note that the bathroom is off the bedroom and all guests must pass through to reach it.

Guest Access

Guests have private access to the living/dining area and full kitchen with dishwasher and shared access to laundry room off your bedroom (we access it from an outside door and do not use it during sleeping hours.)

There is a TV and DVD player for your use. The apartment is not wired for cable, but we do have a digital antenna connected to the television, Chromecast to stream internet video to the television, and a somewhat random collection of DVDs for your use. Both neighborhood grocery stores rent DVDs as well.

Feel free to connect to our wireless network to access the internet. Instructions are in the house manual in the apartment and in your confirmation email when you book.

We have the apartment professionally cleaned between every guest, but don't always get to inspect the cleaners work before a guest arrives. If you find something amiss, please mention it and we will rectify.

Interaction with Guests

We are happy to meet and interact with our guests. We tried to answer many common questions in the house manual you will find upon arrival, but we're right upstairs if you have any questions about the apartment or visiting DC.

If something is wrong, please don't stew on it; just let us know. Though landlords for years, we're fairly new AirBnB hosts and are outfitting the apartment as we go based on feedback from guests. Feel free to ask about kitchen items you might want to borrow or anything else that might make your stay easier.

Please don't hesitate to knock, call, or text if you have urgent concerns.

The Neighborhood

Step outside and choose a blue or orange line metro train across the street, or bus stops that serve 7 different routes within a stone's throw of your accommodations. During peak hours, your public transit commute to the U.S. Capitol, the mall, and Smithsonian Museums is less than 10 minutes.

Our home is also walking distance to historic Eastern Market (7 blocks), the dozens of restaurants on Barracks Row, and two different grocery stores within 2 blocks. There's also a BikeShare station across the street should you wish to rent a bicycle for the day.

Getting around

The best way to get around is public transit. Purchase a SmartTrip card upon arrival at the airport or Union Station metro entrance and pay as you go.

There is public transit access from all three major airports. See your confirmation notice for details.

One of the assets of our home is how easy it is to live without a car. Should you need to drive, a parking permit is required Monday through Friday 7:30am-8:30pm. If you provide your car make, model and plate information 72 hours in advance of your visit, we can get you a temporary parking permit.

Other Things to Note

We've been dinged in a couple recent reviews by guests who did not bother to speak with us about their concerns during their stay. For example, one guest complained the bed was lopsided and uncomfortable. When they checked out, we discovered the bed had slipped off the bed frame and was falling to the floor. I imagine that was very uncomfortable, but the guest slept multiple nights without mentioning something that took us only a couple minutes to fix (and insert a spacer to prevent it happening again.)

Finally, YES, the recent cold snap in DC has driven mice into the house. It happens sometimes with old row houses. We have redoubled our mouse control strategies, which will hopefully solve the problem. Please let us know if you continue to see evidence of mice.

  • We loved our stay in Washington. The apt was perfect for our family of five. Good space and amenities. Plenty of information is provided for the apartment and surrounding area by Jennifer. Love that it is next to a metro station, so easy to get around. Jennifer and her family couldn't have been nicer. We would highly recommend this apt.

  • Our stay at Jen's apartment was fabolous, close to the capitol and exactly as the picture.

  • Very good location just next to the Metro, supermarket and other shops and restaurants are just feet away, yet it's pretty quiet!

The host was very helpful in arranging a parking pass for our visit just a few hours before our arrival. They also left a House manual which gave us instructions on tips for the apt and surrounding area- Super helpful and extremely well organized!!

There were 4 of us in total, we all slept comfortably. The place was neat and clean.

  • The location is superb.Being so close to Harris-Teeter and the Metro is such a positive benefit. Jennifer is very responsive and hospitable. She was able to get us a parking permit for our rental car. Be prepared to bring your own soap and shampoo when you come. The bed is difficult too for two people to sleep in. When one person gets out of bed, the other side sinks dramatically. It becomes difficult to have a restful sleep.

I had brought some sunflower seeds (in the shells). The package
was open and put on the kitchen counter. When we were getting ready to leave I went to move the uneaten ones into a zip lock baggie. I noticed where a mouse/mice had gotten in the bag and left a mess. I cleaned the mess up and threw the seeds away. We didn't eat there (ate out) but that would have been a definite problem had we taken our meals in. I realize it is a basement apartment but hopefully Jennifer will set some mouse traps so other guests won't be surprised like we were.

  • Accommodations were ok. Not are bright or clean as the pictures suggestion. On the positive side the host was flexible with us for timing. I found this place expensive for what was offered.

  • This is a great location: it's over the road from a subway station and you can see Capitol Hill up the road if you're keen for a walk. It's also very close to a sizable grocery store, a Subway food outlet and a computer games store (don't knock it... we needed an HDMI cable at one point, so that came in handy).

We're a family of five and on a multi city trip, staying at 3 different AirBNB locations, Jennifer was easily both the best organised and the most bend-over-backwards helpful.

The place isn't particularly large, so if you have more than 4 people you may be tripping over each other a bit, but it was an excellent evening camp for a family or group going out to sightsee each day, particularly if you have small kids and want to keep transport time to a minimum,

  • To get a feel of life in DC, I definitely recommend Jennifer's place! The basement apt was perfect for the 3 of us. I believe Jennifer's experiences in travel have served her well in having everything in tip top shape for guests! Don't judge the book by its cover! Super clean, super convenient, and wonderfully comfortable.
Jennifer's quick responses and flexibility made us able to focus on the sights and sounds of DC! When we did spend time in the apt, it was enhanced by thorough instructions for the TV , games, books, videos, etc.
The kitchen was a great asset for fixing breakfast before venturing out for the day. Grocery store on the corner was fabulous, and restaurants within a few blocks made for nice evening outings.

    November 2013
  • The apartment was very comfortable, with everything as advertised. Jennifer has left many thoughtful touches, like a selection of DVDs to watch and popcorn for guests, and a drawer full of maps and other tourist resources. I appreciated the full range of kitchen supplies and the excellent water pressure in the shower. And the convenience cannot be beat, with the Potomac Ave Metro stop visible through the window.
I would point out that as a basement it had considerable noise from upstairs, but that didn't impact my stay negatively.

    November 2013
  • Jennifer was great! The location was so convenient, metro literally steps from the door. Went with my family including a four month old and Jennifer was accommodating and fold out play pen provided. The air purifier kept the basement dry. Although it was loud it helped drown out the noise if planning on sleeping early or sleeping in. The apartment was clean and well stocked with towels and blankets. Happy with my stay!

  • Very comfortable and quiet. Location right next to the subway is extremely convenient. Hosts were very accommodating.

We're long time residents of Washington, DC -- a yoga instructor and modern dancer/college professor -- with a love of travel that didn't stop when we became parents. We are easy going travelers and get the challenges (and joys) of traveling with children. As hosts, we're happy to advise on touring DC (with or without children) and hope to create the kind of airbnb experience we'd want ourselves: uncomplicated, friendly, quiet, and homey.
