About This Listing
Wonderful little studio home set on top of a hill overlooking Hilo Bay. Best of "country" living with all the comforts of home- full kitchen, bath and comfortable queen size bed. Great place to relax after spending your day exploring Hilo town!
Studio home with a petite footprint. Cozy and comfortable on 30 acres with organic garden, trails, waterfalls and sweet views of Hilo Bay.
Historic Hilo town is fun for shopping, movies and some great eating experiences. Our own small black sand beach with beautiful snorkeling and swimming is a 20 minutes drive and it's only 1 3/4 hours to the Big Islands longest white sand beach.
The property is peaceful and removed from the beaten path. Hike to the river or stream, retreat and relax, or take day trips to explore this dynamic island. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay.
Guests have full access to the house (kitchen bath, etc) and are free to walk the grounds and explore. Feel free to try some mac nuts, bananas, or use some herbs from the garden when you cook!!
Interaction with Guests
Other friendly helpful people do live on the property( in small camps not visible from the house) so you may see them coming or going. We respect your privacy during your stay but will always be available for questions and guests are always welcome to join in for meals, star gazing or talk story around the fire if we are around!
Our neighborhood is beautiful and remote- all properties being reached via a one lane country road up the hill through macademia nut orchards. Large lots, nice neighbors, really great for walking with incredible views of Hilo Bay below. If you walk up high enough, you may even catch a glimpse of the caldera in Volcano!!
Beebs is a great host! She is a very friendly and loving small outside mutt that loves to have guests. Zena (older affectionate cat) is her sidekick. They get fed on the lanai each morning. Our caretaker is happy to take this simple chore but you are welcome to do if you please. Instructions are on our aloha list and you can arrange it with us. Your choice.
While we are located only 15 minutes from Hilo, we do recommend you have a car, as we are located on 30 acres off the beaten path.
Other Things to Note
There is no wifi in the house but great cell phone reception. I use a wifi hotspot on my phone for my laptop and iPad and it works great. There is a TV (very limited reception/channels) with a DVD player with plenty of movies to watch and relax at night.
We simply ask that you love and respect the home as we do. Please feel free to use what we leave you and clean up after cooking meals. We will take care of bedding, towels, and general clean up after you go. Mahalo!! Don't hesitate to ask for something you may need.
We loved our stay in Hilo - a simple and peaceful place. For us, Rebecca's house was the antidote to the rush of travelling (especially after Oahu). We swam in the nearby falls and relaxed on the front verandah. Beebs the dog has an infectious zest for life and was great company too. Highly recommend if you want to get away from it all!
Home Away from Home.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Wailele. Rebecca is a wonderful host. We were in town for the Merrie Monarch Festival, and needed to be close to Hilo, but preferred a secluded spot with wonderful energy. This was it. We felt like we were visiting a close friend who had provided for our every need.
It was a true pleasure to wake up there every morning -- spotless, comfortable, and tranquil. We enjoyed listening to the wonderful CDs as we cooked, picking fresh herbs from the garden, and walking around the property gathering fresh mac nuts (she has a nutcracker on the deck). We only wish we'd had more time to explore the nearby waterfalls and mountain stream, and make a fire in the fire pit. Plus a day to read some of Rebecca's great books.
Of course we also enjoyed the sweet dog Beebs, who came to say hello each morning, but was so well-trained she didn't come into the house.
Part of the adventure of staying here is the wonderful, windy drive up the mountain. To be honest, it took us a couple times to get our bearings and find the place, but it was well worth it.
If you have a chance to stay at Wailele, you are very fortunate. Mahalo nui loa, Rebecca, we hope to stay with you again soon.

The place was a beautiful, private location with wonderful pets, and with attentive caretakers. Just what I need to de-stress from record breaking Boston weather!
I would definitely stay here again.
We really liked the house, a little peace of heaven near Hilo, fully equipped. If you like quiet moments and pets this place is for you ! We gonna miss Beebs and Zena !
Rebecca was great with communication despite some AirBnB glitches. This was our fourth AirBnB stay on our Hawaii trip and our favorite. This cottage is 4.5 miles high in the Hills above Hilo but you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. The starlight views are insane and you even have a view of Hilo, far below. The property is a macadamia nut farm which covers many acres. There's a lot of land to explore including a beautiful stream and waterfall.
The cottage has everything you'll need, including a comfortable bed, sofa, very nice bathroom and TV if you somehow become bored with the galaxy outside! We would definitely stay here again and we very much miss her dog Beebs!
We just woke up from our second night here. It's so peaceful and comfortable that we don't want to leave! But, alas, we must continue on our adventure. This place is truly unique and enchanting. Off the grid, but with all the amentities!
The house is totally private, but the farm caretakers's camp is nearby. They are all friendly and helpful when you want them to be and completely respectful of your privacy othewise. Ta'api lent me his guitar! It's so peaceful and quiet up here. A whole day can go by without seeing another person.
There is a short walk/hike to the nearby river and waterfall that is truly amazing. Again, not another sole around. It's almost too good to be true!
The house comes with a sweet little guard dog and two friendly cats. All people lovers and a joy to have around. I can't say enough about how much we loved this place! I could come here for an extended stay and truly relax.
Thank you so much for letting us experience your little piece of heaven. Words cannot describe it adequately.
The cottage is up in the hills above Hilo in a Macadamia orchard, isolated, private, very peaceful and relaxing. It is off the grid but with all the comforts of home minus tv or wifi but with great cell signal. There was fresh Macadamia nuts and a nutcracker, papayas, bananas and coffee beans provided which we enjoyed. Great oceans views from the wrap around porch and scenic 12 minute drive to and from downtown Hilo. Five minute hike down the back yard to a stream and an awesome waterfall, steep trail requiring moderate fitness level. Also enjoyed the company of two outdoor cats and a chihuahua who greets you when you return. Melissa and Taapai, the caretakers on the large property were very helpful with info and tips about Hilo and need to see attractions. We thoroughly enjoyed our for night stay here and would want to come back in the future.
Thanks for the sweet review. I'm working away from Hawaii right now and am so grateful to have wonderful caretakers and guests that appreciate the property.
I hear you on the toaster and microwave and will be getting a toaster as suggested. The microwave...going to have to confer with my solar guy. (personally I don't use them due to general distrust of their long term health effects that are still unknown) I understand how convenient they are though. I'm an iron skillet fan. So glad you enjoyed the critters too! You got great reviews from the family up there.
Welcome back any time.
About the Host, Rebecca
I am a positive person who enjoys people, animals and nature very much. I am easy going, resourceful and a good communicator. I enjoy the flow and interchange of life. My life has been enriched by good travel and adventure. On the other hand, being at home reading, entertaining, gardening provides a good balance.
I recently spent time in Okinawa, Japan, which was a joy. Another beautiful island. I also enjoy visiting Thailand. The pace and aesthetic of both Okinawa and Thailand resonate with me.
But Hawaii has my heart. I have been here for over 30 years now and love it more all the time.
