The Sierra del Oreganal, birthplace of the River Genal, is one of the most beautiful places of the province of Malaga.
Below the mountain range we have the villages of Cartajima, Parauta, Júzcar, Faraján and Alpandeire.
Average population of each village is 100 to 300. This low density gives them a welcoming warmth and genuine rural charm.
From the Villages, this small mountain range rises to a height of 1,200 metres, the peak called Jarstepar climbing to 1,400 metres. Great natural walks in the countryside from the top you can see most of the villages in the Serrinia de Ronda, and on clear days, even as far as the Rock of Gibraltar and North Africa.
In this area of high ground, as far as the source of the River Genal, there are many attractive features in the landscape, with large groves of chestnut trees providing one of the most beautiful local sights, especially in Spring when in flower, and the amber colours of Autumn.
Local Chestnuts Tradition
From springtime onwards the green of the chestnut leaves starts to stand out from that of other trees, such as the almonds, cork oaks and, to a lesser extent, the olive trees. Between Parauta and Cartajima numerous hectares are under cultivation with chestnut trees. Among the chestnuts there are also a few walnut, persimmon and even strawberry trees.
In extreme, The limestone mountains called Los Riscos, provides a very different sight. This is an escarpment situated opposite the village of Cartajima. From there to Júzcar (The Blue Smurf Village), following the winding road which links the two villages, you can see some original formations sculpted by erosion out of the limestone rocks. A new carpark and walk through the Riscos mountains outside Juzcar takes about 1.5h and is truly well worth the visit.
There are other extremely beautiful spots, such as the Canaílla del Lobo y Cepo, the peak called la Hurta and the caves known as Carrión, Charcón Bajo and de la Miguela.
