  • If you've ever dreamed of living in a beautiful beach home, you can live the dream in this wonderful vacation rental. This is a magical place, with gorgeous gardens, a fish pond, and a great view from the wrap-around porch -- fall asleep to the sound of frogs croaking and wake up to the sound of birds chirping. The house is very well appointed with all the kitchen and household supplies, towels, and beach toys you'll need to enjoy your stay. It also has a full laundry room, a baby grand piano, and a fast internet connection.

The location is amazing! Richardson's Beach Park directly across the street has a great black sand cove for swimming, plus lifeguards, bathrooms and showers. The snorkeling was fantastic -- it was like swimming in an aquarium! We also swam with sea turtles and saw them basking in the sun on the rocks across the street. The house is about 5 miles from Hilo, an adorable small town with friendly people, a beautiful waterfront, great farmer's market and gorgeous waterfalls just outside of town. James and Jocelyne are wonderful hosts, very friendly and responsive. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer!

  • Charming house, great location across the street from a black sand beach that tour buses regularly stop at. Friendly, accommodating hosts. The provided coffee and water bottles were a lifesaver. The kids loved the piano and the fish pond. Made our stay memorable.

  • This cottage is a wonderful way to stay and enjoy Hilo and environs. The home and yard is beautiful, comfortable and well-equipped. It's not a b and b but I don't think it's advertised that way so people should be prepared to buy food if they want breakfast. The kitchen is fully equipped and there are beach gear around as well. The beach parks across the street are stunning.

  • The home was lovely and very comfortable for me and my family. It definitely had the Hawaiian feel and being across the street from the beach was an added bonus. James and Jocelyne were kind and gracious hosts. They were very response to the one issue that came up, internet access, and it was fixed immediately. We highly recommend this home and would definitely stay here agin when we return to the Big Island!

  • This was our first trip using airbnb and it turned out to be a very enjoyable vacation. We saw James and Jocelyne's listing and after reading about their place, looking at the pictures, and reading previous reviews we decided to go ahead and book our stay with them. They were always very prompt in replying to our inquiries and answered all our questions. On the day of our arrival they met us at their house and seemed as nice as all the previous reviewers had stated. They have a very nice beach house which is right across the street from the beach, it's really a great location. The house is actually a former post office with an interesting history. I personally enjoyed sitting on their porch every morning, drinking my coffee and listening to the sounds of the ocean across the street. It was like our own little tropical paradise and a very enjoyable and relaxing week. The only glitch was when we had an issue one day when the TV stopped working but James came right over and fixed the problem. To all of you reading this and perhaps contemplating a Hilo vacation and looking for a nice place to stay with some great hosts, I would say gives James and Jocelyne a serious look and consideration. Book with them and you will certainly be glad that you did. Thanks again guys.

  • James and Jocelyn's home is beautiful, so comfortable, and offers picturesque views. They both met us at the house upon arriving in Hilo and took the time to give us a tour of the house and a slew of recommendations for restaurants and attractions in the area. We were visiting Hilo for a work trip, but when we were able to finally take a beach day, there were beach mats, boogie boards, and snorkel sets for us to use. Couldn't have asked for a more positive island experience!

  • My family (mother and two half-siblings in early 20s) and I spent two weeks at Hale Kai during the 2013/14 holiday season. Set across from Richardson Beach Park and its black-sand/volcanic rock beaches, James' and Jocelyne's spacious home was a fantastic base for a peaceful and relaxing tropical vacation. Hale Kai was well-appointed with snorkel gear (very handy for seeing and swimming with Richardson Beach's tropical fish and sea turtles), Hawaiian coffee, and a backyard mandarin tree. Watching the palm trees and the beach from the veranda put us all in the aloha spirit. This was my family's first time in Hawaii (and mine on the Big Island), and our stay at Hale Kai was key in making our trip a magical experience. As hosts, James and Jocelyne were very friendly and quickly responded to any questions we had. A great place to stay (especially for families and small groups)!

  • James and Jocelyne were excellent hosts, flexible in timing in meeting us to show us the house, and informative about the area. This is a wonderful place to stay in Hilo. It is right across the street from the best swimming and snorkeling beach in Hilo. We were lucky enough to see the finals of a surfing competition the day we arrived, and to snorkel with sea turtles and tropical fish every day! This beautiful house is a remodeled old post office, with a classic tropical bungalow feeling. We had a wonderful 3 nights here and when we return to Hawaii we will plan to stay here even longer!
