we stayed 5 days at the house in the summer of 2015. It is a nice big house located right across the street from the beach. The location is nice, at a quiet place at night. During daytime it is a bit busier but not annoyingly. Funny detail is that every day we saw several buses of Japanese tourist unload and pack up again in 15 minutes. They too are not annoying. The location is close to Hilo centre, 5-10 min by car.
The house has plenty of space, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. all big enough, kitchen well equiped (a good can-opener is lacking). Clean.
James and Jocelyn seem a nice couple. Helpful with everything, we only saw them upon arrival.
Jamie and Jocelyn are super welcoming...you feel like part of the ohana! This house is classic, old school Hawaii. So clean and bright inside, you almost forget to go out! It sits across the street from Hilo's best beach...cool water close in, great coral, tons of turtles and fish, excellent diving when the waves are small and fun surf when the swell is up. Hilo can be rainy, but this house sits in an area the rain passes by on the way to Mauna Kea. Big lawn out front, fish pond on the side with lots to look at. This house is our go-to!
The house was beautiful and our hosts were happy to accommodate our needs. The neighbors are awesome!
This beautiful big clean property is well located and can accommodate a big family or friends. Great snorkeling across the street at Richardson's beach and ocean views
James and Jocelyne were very kind to show us around the house! The house was lovely, too, with a mini-grand-piano, which my son played with joy. Located just in front of the beach, where turtles resided(they were so peaceful).
Had very peaceful and fabulous time.
What a great place--it "made" our Hilo experience!
James and Jocelyne were very communicative, flexible, and friendly. They were accommodating of our schedule and Jocelyn met us at the house at a convenient time for us. She was very welcoming and gave us great recommendations for things to do in Hilo. She had put out vases of beautiful fresh flowers, a basket of local food, and had water bottles in the fridge.
We really enjoyed the Richardson Beach House itself--we would definitely recommend it (with a few caveats for personal preference). The house is beautiful and feels historic, it had great decor, and was across from a beautiful beach. There were at least 12 sea turtles in the tide pools across from the house, a lifeguard, and spots to snorkel. The yard is beautiful and we fell asleep to the sound of rain and coquis frogs. This was the experience we were looking for in Hilo!
The "personal preference" caveat--if you can't handle cockroaches, tiny ants on any crumbs you leave out, geckos in the kitchen, and no air conditioning (although plenty of fans provided), then this isn't your place. We reasoned that these things are probably common to most Hilo accommodations and still enjoyed our stay very much. Because the windows don't close, we did feel a little close to the neighbors, but again, this type of window is common to Hilo houses I believe. If you expect an immaculately clean and up-to-date rental, you might be disappointed, but this was reasonably clean and the decor was beautiful inside. Even if the cockroaches (or other caveats) turn you off, I'd urge you to give this house a try--it felt like an amazing tropical experience in a perfect location.
We had a fantastic time at Oceanfront Hele Kai. Its proximity to the beach can't be beat, nor can the charm of the house. James and Jocelyne were wonderful hosts and were very quick to respond. Thank you so much for making our vacation on the Big Island unforgettable.
