One of the best spots for a Big Island visit. Just for the views from the ocean facing balcony I would suggest booking immediately. Netflix and WiFi available, but we spent most of the time outside listing to the waves and enjoying the coastline. Now on Maui already missing the Ocean View.
My husband and I enjoyed our stay here very much. The deck has a fantastic view of the ocean and lava cliff coastline. Communication with Sandy was easy and prompt and we had no problems with getting into the unit. The bed is comfy and the kitchen is very well equipped with anything you might need (including spices for cooking). In fact the whole unit is well stocked (i.e. a telescope, emergency bathroom items, DVD's, mask & snorkel). We also loved the open floor plan and decor of the unit. The internet worked well, although we just used it for doing some local research on our ipad so we never streamed movies over the home entertainment system. The black sand beach that is a 10 minute walk (and climb down the cliff) is a very unique, special place. It is a clothing optional beach on which Sandy had given us a heads up on so it was not a surprise. You can go swimming here but the surf is rough so it's not a "lazy float swim" area but this is typical for this side of the island and the locals obviously enjoy this beach. There is a thermal ocean pool (with lifeguards) about 15 min drive to the north if you want a leisurely swim and you can snorkel here although there is not that much to see as far as fish in this open to the ocean pool. It's a good hour drive to Volcanoe National Park from the house and about a 35 min drive to Hilo. We did not mind the driving though since that is how we got to experience a great deal of the island and stumbled on some fantastic stops. If you have a clear night a drive to see the volcanoe at night with all of the stars shining is definitely a must. The star gazing from the back deck was also fantastic. On Wed. night the place at the "End of the Road" was definitely the place to be with a band, local artists and local food vendors. Our one major complaint about the unit is that the screens for the sliding doors and the bedroom window are missing which made it a bit buggy at night if lights are left on. Not necessarily biting bugs but just bugs. Since the only way to cool the place is to open it up it's hard to avoid letting bugs in. I think that is why the green lizards that invariable get into the house are so fat and happy. The lizards keep to themselves and are not a bother (I grew up in south Florida and we always had lizards that got into the house so this was not new for me). We tried to keep the lights very low or off completely if we had the sliding doors open and this worked fine. At night we closed the sliding doors and just left the bedroom window open with the fan going...
Äs there are so many comments in English, we decide to serve the German speaking community with a report in German:
Maholo an Sandy
My husband and I had a fantastic stay at Sandy's Oceanfront 1bd near Pahoa. Everything about the place exceeded our expectations from the amazing view and well-equipped kitchen to the great location. It feels extremely private. The place is really right next to the ocean, built on an old lava flow nestled in a lush, tropical part of the island. Sandy was very responsive to our questions and we had an easy time checking in and out. We could not have asked for a better stay.
You can see fotos and think: beautiful pictures! but then you get there and are absolutly speechless!!!
Everything is really stunning!!!
The sea is close enough to touch. A black sand beach for swimming is located 3 min walk! may not be suitable every day: it depends on you and the size of the waves.
Hot springs for bathing: just up the road, about 10 min by car, perfekt to end the day,
a logoon for snorkeling with colorful fish, at the northern end of the road, about 25 min by car.
A café with delcious salads is at the southern end of the road; on the lava fields, where you can make walks.
Pahoa is a sleepy little western town with a large range of healthy and spiritual things. 45 min by car,
The house is perfectly decorated! you missed nothing! From the shaker to the espresso machine, nice dishes, all necessary cooking tools are available
and the best: you are at the end of the world and still has really nice landlord and cool neighbors.
Sandy is a invisible good spirit! If you have a question she is always right there for you.
It is simply perfect! You´ll never want to go home!
Sandy `s house has a special location! On the really botanical side of the island, directly on the sea, we have, in the really well-equipped house quickly settled in and enjoyed our holiday. The wildlife shows quickly and at night they are a great concert. Thank you Sandy for this great time with you!
The view from the porch was outstanding, right next to the water. Privacy was all you could ask for as we didn't see any neighbors. There was no swimming or way to get into the water, which was a little disappointing, but after getting to know the area and the big island that was understandable. Very nice and would not hesitate to recommend.
We spent a few days at Sandy's home and thoroughly enjoyed our time at her home. It is a perfect place to check out the lava fields, relax and enjoy the east side of the big island. The property is right on the lava cliffs. After a little rain the frogs will sing all night. As soon as we left the house we missed being there! Thanks for a wonderful addition to our honeymoon.
We really enjoyed our stay at this house. It offered the rustic "locals" environment we were seeking after too many nights at Hawaiian resorts. Access to the beach was great (even if filled with hippies), and the views of course were breathtaking. One thing I would caution any potential renter on is the access to groceries and services; Pahoa is a good half hour away, with a nice but overpriced "hippy-friendly" market. Be sure to stop off at Safeway or KTA on the way down for anything you want to cook, unless you want to shell out for "GMO-free" nonsense.
Overall, a fantastic place to spend some days away from it all!
What a wonderful hostess Sandy is! The accommodations were everything we were hoping for and more. You really need to sit on the lanai and see all of the sea life go by. We had a whale breach right in front of us....maybe 100 ft at best, which brought squeals of delight from all of us. We saw dolphin swim by and sea turtles. The location was ideal for us as we wanted to see the volcano, black sand beaches, volcano hot springs, water falls, etc. Sandy was even so wonderful as to let my son and his wife...coming from Honolulu ...stay with us a couple of nights and even set up a bed for them.
The noise levels at night, with the frogs and ocean waves were perfect for us, yet I can see some people being bothered with it. Then bring ear plugs, but you will be missing part of the experience. Also...it is incredible dark there, so if you are arriving at night as we were...with rain....it is difficult at best.
And there is no cable TV. She runs off of the Internet and the only TV was in the bedroom, which drove my other half nuts. There is also no cell phone service, so you are stepping a little bit back in time. I rather enjoyed it. She does have phone service which allows you to call anywhere in the US and Canada at no charge, so to me, that makes it worth it. I'm on (email hidden)t on my cell phone.
There was a wonderful little mom and pop restaurant in Pahoa called Pele's, kitchen, which we loved for breakfast and lunch. Lava rocks over by the volcano is another good choice.
Would I return to Sandy's again? Absolutely without a question.
I hope you really consider this gem at the sea.
