The Space

We have a newly created "mid century modern style" loft studio available at our new art center. It is suitable for art lovers or creative persons that appreciate spacious surroundings and a creative atmosphere that allows for communication and interaction as well as introspection, productivity, relaxation and privacy..

Locality: The studio is situated on the sunny first floor loft of a 1890's mixed residential/commercial building (email hidden)ly main street near Kottbusser Tor; a stylishly renovated former "Kaffeehaus" in the middle of the vibrant cosmopolitan "Kreuzkoelln" neighborhood, the creative area connecting Kreuzberg and Neukoelln.
Within walking distance are numerous cafes/restaurants/clubs, art spaces and institutions like Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien, the BBK Print Facilities and Media Studios, Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien and NGBK.

Public Transport:
The U-Bahnhof Schönleinstrasse (Metro LIne U8, exit Schinkestrasse) is right at the doorstep, as is the N8 Nightbus stop. It is a 200 meter walk from U-Bahnhof Kottbusser Tor (Metro LIne U1 reaches areas like Friedrichshain and Schöneberg within 15 minutes). At Kottbusser Tor you'll find a taxi stand as well.

Details: The fully furnished studio is 3.85 m. high; has a new wooden floor, and is sunny and well insulated, featuring large, newly built double-pane windows. The no-smoking room has comfortable large double beds with comfortable down and feather comforters (or cotton ones if needed); it comes with towels, sheets, bathrobes, a silent mini-bar/fridge; coffee/tea machine, ironing gear, hair dryer, design furniture and original avant-garde art.

The rent includes electricity, central heating, WIFI (50.000 kBit/s and cleaning. There is a shared bathroom with a rain shower. Our guests have access to a new washing machine and spacious salon (where you can smoke) and large stylish kitchen.

We are an open, supportive community of visual artists, curators, music producers that welcomes international guests. We speak English, Portuguese, Dutch, German, and some French.

    Response from Paul:

    Dear Yasmine,

many thanks for your lovely feedback.
I'm sorry about the confusion around the breakfast; I did not mean to have you feel uncomfortable of course. I have taken it out of the description now; thanks for the hint.
I was happy to have you with us.
I wish you all my best.

  • Paul was a very kind and quirky character. You walk into the apartment and there is an open gallery space filled with interesting art pieces. The kitchen is the communal area which is huge and equipped with all your cooking essentials as well as a Ping pong arena for entertainment. A few others lived in the apartment and were all very nice as well. The room is tucked away in one of the corners of the apartment which was great as far as privacy goes. I never ran into anyone else really unless I went to the kitchen area. As far as the room goes, in addition to the enormous amount of space, it was tastefully decorated and had a super cozy feel to it... Hanger rack, desk, dresser, mini fridge, coffee machine, the works. Bathroom was also awesome. Open rain shower with beeswax treated wooden floor. Washer worked great for clothing also. Lastly, the apartment is 11 seconds away from the train station which is the only way to macgiver around berlin. Found this to be all too convenient. Definitely recommend. Thanks Paul!

  • The stay at Paul was really nice. The room is exactly as in the pictures, very clean and intimate. The apartment overall has a gallery space and during our stay there was an event going on. There is good cofee in the room. The location is really great as there are cafes and restaurants all over the place, many of theme with high ratings. We could recommend the sushi down the street and Cafe Valentin a few blocks away. Use (website hidden) or "still in Berlin" for maps of cool places around. The bathroom might get a bit crowded sometimes, and the water in the shower is not getting very hot but at 34 degrees outside nobody would complain about it.

  • I stayed at Paul's for two days only. The place had a really cool feel to it, great space and a great room with mid century furniture. Nice place if you are into art and design! Great area too. I never knew when I booked but it's a hub for artists. Cheers Paul

  • Sadly I must say am disappointed with our stay at the art gallery loft studio. Paul was very friendly, the room looked exactly as described, wifi was fast, the bed comfy and Kreuzberg is a great area, but what is not made clear in the room description is the fact that people smoke in the building.

This became a particular problem because someone in the room right next door was there most of the time in the evening, and his sigarette smoke was continually coming through the wall - not one but both nights we were there trying to get some sleep. Unfortunately smoke really affects my eyes and throat. Particularly unpleasant when you can't walk away from it, when you're trying to relax or sleep. When I booked the room I checked that the 'smoking allowed' icon was un-ticked.

The room is located on the first floor and overlooks a busy street. So when we had the window open to try get in some fresh air, the traffic noise was so loud, that this was another a barrier to unwind and getting good sleep. If you don't mind sleeping with the window closed, then you're lucky. The double glazed windows do stop the traffic noise quite well.

Finally the bathroom was occupied every time we wanted to use it. I have a feeling at least 4 if not 5 artists occupy in the building - quite a lot to be sharing one bathroom with. That said, the bathroom was kept clean. But the shower was either stone cold or barely luke warm at best by the time we got to use the bathroom. There may have been a knack to it, or perhaps the water was on a timer, but when we looked for Paul to ask, we couldn't find him as it was quite late in the evening.

The shower/bathroom situation we wouldn't mind putting up with if that's was the only thing - it is the smoke that is the real problem that prevented us from being able to relax and enjoy ourselves.

  • A very cool place to stay in an awesome location. So many nice bars and restaurants are just a cartwheel away. Paul and the gang are all super friendly and helpful – and it's pretty sweet coming home to an art gallery every evening. I hope to stay there again. Cheers, all!

I am part of an open, supportive community of visual artists, curators, architects, music producers that welcomes international guests. We have newly renovated guest rooms available at our new art center right in the middle of the lively cosmopolitan neighborhood dubbed "Kreuzkoelln", the creative area connecting Kreuzberg and Neukoelln. The studios are suitable for art lovers or creative persons that appreciate spacious surroundings and a creative atmosphere that allows for communication and interaction as well as introspection, productivity, relaxation and privacy. Together, we have lovingly built our art house in a historic loft that has seen use as billiard salon, Kaffeehaus and cinema. It comprises ateliers and guest rooms, and a large salon/lobby/kitchen area. At our large gallery space, we set up exhibitions, organize workshops, screenings, talks and such. If they wish, our guests can take part in any event, or even talk to us about setting up one themselves if needed. I work as an artist, curator and general director of our art house, after founding and managing an art space in Friedrichshain for the last four years. I have been doing such work for quite a while already, having shown my art around the world; setting up art enclaves, and immersing myself in Berlin's creative and underground scenes from the pre-Wall Kreuzberg to post-Wall Mitte and beyond. Sharing my experience and knowledge is a pleasure to me, and I shall be happy to give you tips or advice while staying here.
