We love El Raval. It is real with a lot of personality and character, and lots of locals!

Here's what “barcelona-tourist-guide” has to say about it:
"The area is vibrant, historic, authentic and full of personality. It (email hidden)ly, multi-cultural neighbourhood with a huge variety of tempting cafes, restaurants and bars. The area has also become fashionable being host to a wide variety of art studios, galleries and trendy bookshops, not to mention the imposing MACBA (museum of modern art) and CCCB which is the neighbouring exhibition centre.

Staying in El Raval also means that you are situated between two of Barcelona's famous food markets, La Boqueria on Las Ramblas and Mercat Sant Antoni. Both places are worth a visit to stock up on fresh fruit to get you through the day or to sample Spain's delicious chorizo or Jamon Serrano.

Clothes shopping is also a pleasure in El Raval thanks to all the little one-off boutiques that line some of the streets giving you a truly unique shopping experience. Unlike the Eixample with its large branded name designer labels, Raval is where you find the small privatly owned shops selling clothes you can't find anywhere else.

El Raval is alive all through the day and night so you will never be without an eaterie to entice you in the early hours of the morning!

El Raval offers a central location within walking distance of many of the other popular areas such as the Gothic Quarter and l’Eixample. The nearest metro stops are 5 minutes away on Las Ramblas, Barcelona's most famous street which runs up one side of El Raval."

The central Plaza: Plaza Catalunya is a 10 minute walk and there is a choice of 4 different METRO stations within 10 mins walk:
METRO Parallel, (Green & Purple lines)
METRO Liceu (Green line)
METRO Sant Antoni (Purple line)
METRO Plaza Universidad (Red line)

  • To start with the negative things:
First of we had to wait more than 1 hour after the agreed time just next to the apartment before we got the keys.
The apartment didn't look like on the photos, not sure if we got a different one or if they had just redone it massively.
Entrance was somewhat shabby due to reconstructions. One morning we woke up to some crazy neighbor "knocking" (more like hitting) on a door and screaming like she was going to kill someone.

    Over to the positive part:
Even though the apartment looked different from photos it was a great positive surprise and we were very happy about it. Big clean place with a lovely balcony. Very central locations. Apart from the delay in leaving over the key all went smooth.
All in all a very nice place

  • The apartment's great, brand new and decked out with everything we needed. It has a massive roof terrace that caught the sun all day, and the property was well located for bars, shops and restaurants. Some of the local streets were a little dodgy, but in general you could get about without any hassle.

Angela, the host, was very helpful, and her relaxed attitude towards checkout made our final day much easier.

The only issue was an elevator being installed in the stairwell, and although we were assured there would be no noise it was in fact extremely loud and made sleeping from 9am onwards close to impossible - a real frustration seeing as we were there for a music festival and didnt get back to the flat often until 6am...

    Response from Angela And Asaf:

:) Sorry about the daytime sleeping Josh. Its a fair point and I'll be more aware of it for sonar and upcoming festival dates. I hope you were able to find a way to carry on!

  • Perfect place to visit Barcelona with a group of 6. Quit rooms and very clean. It looks like we were the first users after renovation.
The quarter offers everything. But you have to accept that living space is taken from the residents and rented to tourist. The gentrification in Raval is going on.

I grew up in Sydney, Australia and moved to London at 24, gave it a good 10 years and now I've found Barcelona and Asaf. To me, Barcelona is the love child of these two very different cities: Its the perfect combination of the good weather, relaxed and active lifestyle of Sydney and the bustling, centre-of-the-world ness of London. Asaf and I love to show visitors what Barcelona is for us: The creativity, architecture and music. The beach, cycling, BBQs with friends, wonderful food and amazing weather. It's a great place to call home for a little while. In my spare time I crochet and I have a little Etsy shop called Churchill Handmade. My creations are all from natural fibres like wools, hemp, bamboo and organic cotton because I think we all need a bit more nature in our lives.
