Great house for families traveling with kids, or for larger groups who want to stay together in the Highlands. Fully-equipped kitchen, large backyard deck, a piano, and a finished basement. Our neighborhood is GREAT for walking/bus. We live car-free!
Our 1925 two-story-plus-basement Dutch Colonial is located in the desirable Highlands-Douglass neighborhood, 3 quick blocks from Bardstown Road and a straight shot down Bardstown Road to downtown Louisville. We are in the Seneca Gardens area of the Highlands, half a mile to both Seneca and Cherokee Parks (great running neighborhood and park), and a short walk to grocery, post office, margaritas, sushi, farmers markets, and more. It's currently set up to sleep 8-10 plus a baby.
Though the listing price is for the entire home (we stay with family in town when our home is rented), please send an inquiry if you're interested in just a guest bedroom. We enjoy hosting and could probably work something out.
We hire a professional housecleaner for every booking. Keep in mind that the house is almost 100 years old, however.

Two cars will fit in front of the house on the street, as well as other street parking places. We are one house away from a church parking lot that is available for parking, should you feel more comfortable leaving your car there than on the street. This is a very safe neighborhood, so we always just park on the street.
We are near several major bus routes (Bardstown Road and Taylorsville Road), if you do not have a car (we live car-free).
Less than a mile away:
Kroger, Heine Brothers Coffee, Havana Rumba (Cuban), Java Coffee, Great Flood Brewery, North End Café, Vines & Wines, Breadworks, Cafe Lou Lou, Loop 22, Dundee Tavern, Queen of Sheba (Ethiopian), Oishii Sushi, Farmers' Market, Morris Deli & Liquors, Sol Aztecas, Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen, Kern's Korner
1.0-1.5 miles away:
The Bard's Town, Asiatique, Uptown Cafe, Wild Ginger, Cumberland Brews, Seviche, Za's pizza, Cafe 360, Sapporo (Hibachi), Tom Chee (Gourmet Grilled Cheese), many many more.
Churchill Downs: 6 miles
Barnstable Brown Party: 1.3 miles
*Please note for winter bookings: the basement is significantly cooler than the rest of the house. We have multiple space heaters that we use down there, but because it's below ground-level, it requires the space heaters to keep it warm. For summer bookings, the basement room is cool and pleasant, but the house might be better for smaller groups in the winter times.
The entire house!
Interaction with Guests
During your stay, we'll leave you alone:) If you need us, text us.
We are in the Highlands-Douglass neighborhood -- close to Cherokee and Seneca Parks, as well as Bardstown Road. We love it here because we live car-free, and we are able to walk everywhere.
We are a 3-minute walk from the bus stop, and it's a straight-shot on the bus to downtown Louisville.
Please do not park in front of the neighbors' houses. They are all really nice, but super-protective of their parking places. There are TWO spots available directly in front of our house. If you have more cars than that, please use the church parking lot that is 2 doors down. Thanks in advance for helping keep our neighbors friendly.
No smoking inside. Smoking is fine on the deck, but please pick up your cigarettes.
Be mindful of the new carpeting in the basement, particularly with muddy shoes please.
No drinks on the piano. Be nice to the guitars, etc., if you play them.
Brigid and David's home is exceptional, and proved to be an awesome launchpad for our group of eight as we toured seven bourbon distilleries, visited a smorgasbord of liquor shops, and ate at some of Louisville's excellent restaurants over a four day period.
I especially appreciated their hospitality from the word go. They even left me a birthday card and cupcakes, which was outrageously thoughtful. They adorned the house with notes to answer any questions you may have about everything from the garbage to the toilets, and were accessible via text message for any last minute questions. We felt incredibly comfortable and welcome, and no one in the party stopped remarking how much cooler the trip was because we had a home to call our own instead of a series of lifeless hotel rooms.
My friends and I had a great time in Kentucky, and it was only heightened by our stay at Brigid's and David's home. We're already plotting our comeback to the state in 2015 to see more distilleries and collect more bottles, and we will absolutely be looking them up at that time to see if the house is available again, fingers crossed.
Thanks for everything!
We had a great time staying at this location. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. I thought the beds were especially comfortable as well. The house was a very convenient location for traveling to and from the airport, the bourbon trail, and Mammoth Cave National Park. There were lots of good restaurants, bars, and coffee shops near the house and we really enjoyed the few we tried. I would definitely recommend staying here.
Can I give 6 stars? My group stayed at Brigid's and David's place for a long wedding weekend. It was so great to have all 8 of us together rather than split up between hotel rooms or locations. We were all adults - 3 couples and 2 singles - and we were comfortable and close without being on top on each other. The beds are firm and comfortable, the towels are soft, and the piano sounds beautiful. Their house is historic, homey and comfortable - perfect for preparing dinner (including a handful of ripe and delicious tomatoes from the Kaelin-Caldwell garden!) and breakfast (with coffee!) then gathering around the sitting room with full bellies while one of our group played the piano. Most of us came in from Phoenix, AZ, so we were all enchanted by the lushly green and historic neighborhood. Driving, the house wasn't more than 10-15 minutes from anywhere we wanted to go for wedding festivities (that was around the downtown area.) The nearest grocery store was maybe 2 minutes away. Walking (or jogging), there is a lovely park/greenbelt about a mile away that we visited as well. As a host, Brigid is very warm, responsive, and flexible; they even left us a sweet welcome note, along with a comprehensive list of anything we could need or want to know about the house and the neighborhood. Staying in the Kaelen-Caldwell house truly felt like we were staying with old friends, rather than strangers from the internet.
We arrived and found the house with ease. So many extra touches had been put together for our family. They left homage zucchini bread that was so yummy . Also things were quite cling and we fe
Brigid was a pleasure to coordinate with. The house is in a great neighborhood and it exceeded our expectations from the pictures. The house has everything you could ever need or want and is so organized! We loved it so much, we will hope to use it again next summer!
Brigid was very helpful in our planning process and answered all questions we had ahead of time super quickly. She also was available if anything were to come up on our stay. We truly had a wonderful experience in Louisville and felt at home while staying at Brigid and David's. If friends go to Louisville we will definitely suggest airbnb and tell them to look for Brigid and David's place.
The listing we found to be very accurate and we had no surprises during our stay. The beds were very comfortable and we slept well which doesn't always happen on vacation. Everything was exactly as presented. House is child friendly for those with children. Our party of 5 ages 39-72 had a great time. The only thing I might note is the bedrooms and bathrooms are not on the main level so that may be of concern to folks with mobility issues.
We really enjoyed the neighborhood and tried to spend our money locally and not at chain establishments. The first night we got in a bit late and decided we would relax and grilled out and dined on the patio. The variety of stores, shops, and restaurants was great. We had awesome BBQ, good Irish pub food and pints while watching the Chicago Blackhawks, pizza (sorry not as good as Chicago), and some really good Mexican food.
Had a great time would highly recommend!
We were delighted to find this charming home in a quiet neighborhood close to the Highlands: it lives up to it's description. The home was clean and well furnished with lots of surprising 'extras', like a stocked piano bar and wide selection of cooking spices & herbs. We especially enjoyed the ability to spread out and relax on the backyard deck. The hosts, Brigid and David, did a wonderful job of keeping us informed and making us feel welcome.
Brigid is a Louisville native, but David is from West Texas. We've been married for three years and have a 2-year-old old boy whom we hope to send to college someday -- our AirBnB income goes directly into the wee boy's college fund.
We spent two years living in Scotland, where our son was born, and we absolutely love travel. Now that we're back in Louisville (and not traveling as much), we've enjoyed meeting the people that AirBnB has led to us.
We love adventure, food, whisk[e]y, live music, libraries, castles, cobblestone paths, soccer, travel, flip-charts, historical markers, innovation, talks with good friends.... the list goes on.
David is a consultant in healthcare technology, and Brigid is a professional musician-singer-songwriter. This home is our primary residence, but we stay with nearby family while it is rented.
We are also open to renting out just the guest bedroom or basement room, rather than the entire home. Send an inquiry; we love hosting people.
