Great house for families traveling with kids, or for larger groups who want to stay together in the Highlands. Fully-equipped kitchen, large backyard deck, a piano, and a finished basement. Our neighborhood is GREAT for walking/bus. We live car-free!

The Space

Our 1925 two-story-plus-basement Dutch Colonial is located in the desirable Highlands-Douglass neighborhood, 3 quick blocks from Bardstown Road and a straight shot down Bardstown Road to downtown Louisville. We are in the Seneca Gardens area of the Highlands, half a mile to both Seneca and Cherokee Parks (great running neighborhood and park), and a short walk to grocery, post office, margaritas, sushi, farmers markets, and more. It's currently set up to sleep 8-10 plus a baby.

Though the listing price is for the entire home (we stay with family in town when our home is rented), please send an inquiry if you're interested in just a guest bedroom. We enjoy hosting and could probably work something out.

We hire a professional housecleaner for every booking. Keep in mind that the house is almost 100 years old, however.

Main floor:
•Living room
•Sunroom – w/ IKEA double sofabed and door that separates this room from living room
•Formal dining room, with french doors that open on to a large, multi-level deck.
•Hardwood floors

2nd floor:
•Bedroom #1 – queen bed
•Bedroom #2 – full size bed and crib
•Bedroom #3 – futon (with safety rails for a toddler if needed) and changing table
•Full bathroom

•New carpet
•Full bathroom (shower not tub)

•Huge multi-level deck
•Two grills
•Fenced-in yard
•Front yard herb garden (fresh mint available May-September)
•Patio in the front

•Coffeemaker/tea kettle (coffee & tea provided)
•Gas Stove
•Toaster Oven
•Pots/pans/serving bowls
•Tons of kitchen gadgets (we love to cook)
•Hotel toiletries
•Yamaha acoustic piano
•Kurzweil digital piano (not always available – sometimes I need it for a gig)
•Various stringed instruments around the house
•Children’s toys (if you need them – if not, they will be put away)
•Other baby stuff provided upon request (high chair, stroller, pack and play, infant swing, etc)
•Flat-screen TV in sunroom with basic HD channels and Apple TV (netflix included)

Two cars will fit in front of the house on the street, as well as other street parking places. We are one house away from a church parking lot that is available for parking, should you feel more comfortable leaving your car there than on the street. This is a very safe neighborhood, so we always just park on the street.

We are near several major bus routes (Bardstown Road and Taylorsville Road), if you do not have a car (we live car-free).

Less than a mile away:
Kroger, Heine Brothers Coffee, Havana Rumba (Cuban), Java Coffee, Great Flood Brewery, North End Café, Vines & Wines, Breadworks, Cafe Lou Lou, Loop 22, Dundee Tavern, Queen of Sheba (Ethiopian), Oishii Sushi, Farmers' Market, Morris Deli & Liquors, Sol Aztecas, Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen, Kern's Korner

1.0-1.5 miles away:
The Bard's Town, Asiatique, Uptown Cafe, Wild Ginger, Cumberland Brews, Seviche, Za's pizza, Cafe 360, Sapporo (Hibachi), Tom Chee (Gourmet Grilled Cheese), many many more.

Churchill Downs: 6 miles
Barnstable Brown Party: 1.3 miles

*Please note for winter bookings: the basement is significantly cooler than the rest of the house. We have multiple space heaters that we use down there, but because it's below ground-level, it requires the space heaters to keep it warm. For summer bookings, the basement room is cool and pleasant, but the house might be better for smaller groups in the winter times.

  • Brigid was very helpful in our planning process and answered all questions we had ahead of time super quickly. She also was available if anything were to come up on our stay. We truly had a wonderful experience in Louisville and felt at home while staying at Brigid and David's. If friends go to Louisville we will definitely suggest airbnb and tell them to look for Brigid and David's place.
The listing we found to be very accurate and we had no surprises during our stay. The beds were very comfortable and we slept well which doesn't always happen on vacation. Everything was exactly as presented. House is child friendly for those with children. Our party of 5 ages 39-72 had a great time. The only thing I might note is the bedrooms and bathrooms are not on the main level so that may be of concern to folks with mobility issues.
We really enjoyed the neighborhood and tried to spend our money locally and not at chain establishments. The first night we got in a bit late and decided we would relax and grilled out and dined on the patio. The variety of stores, shops, and restaurants was great. We had awesome BBQ, good Irish pub food and pints while watching the Chicago Blackhawks, pizza (sorry not as good as Chicago), and some really good Mexican food.
Had a great time would highly recommend!

  • We were delighted to find this charming home in a quiet neighborhood close to the Highlands: it lives up to it's description. The home was clean and well furnished with lots of surprising 'extras', like a stocked piano bar and wide selection of cooking spices & herbs. We especially enjoyed the ability to spread out and relax on the backyard deck. The hosts, Brigid and David, did a wonderful job of keeping us informed and making us feel welcome.

  • Recently stayed at Brigid and David's house with 10 friends for the Derby. We all had a great time. The house was perfect, quaint and very comfortable. They were great hosts, everything we needed was there and location was great. Neighborhood was nice and quiet and very close to grocery store. We grilled out one night and found the deck wonderful. Brigid provided us w some snacks which was unexpected and great. I would stay here again for the Derby. Plenty of room for 10 30yr olds.

  • We were traveling to Louisville with our 3 girls to visit family over spring break and were fortunate enough to stumble upon Brigid & Davids listing on airbnb. We've stayed in hotels in the past since no one in our family has a home that is able to accommodate 5 extra people for a week. Not the most ideal arrangement since my family is spread across the city. Brigid and David's home was a perfect match! The size of the home gave all of us our much needed "space" (7 yr old, 11 yr old and 13!!) While the location couldn't have been better. It was minutes from everywhere we need/wanted to go. We were able to celebrate my older daughters 13th birthday in the Highlands at Boombaz (which is 5 minutes away) with over 20 family memeber's, and enjoy Ramsey's, Jack Fry's, Highland Mornings, Heine Bros. Coffee and Graeter's just to mention a few places to eat just minutes away from their home!! WE LOVE and MISS THE HIGHLANDS!!!!

Although we never met Brigid personally, she was wonderful to communicate with electronically and with post it notes! Which my girls LOVED!! I cannot say enough about their graciousness in accommodating us on short notice (and THANK YOU for leaving us the much needed yummy coffee!!) We also loved the eclectic mix of furnishings of their home! Fun seeing a blend of Texas and Kentucky references as well as amazing musical taste (love EC!!) A true home!

  • Brigid was super speedy in getting back to us throughout the process, from initial inquiry to final logistics a couple days before we arrived. She also paid special attention to some of the needs of our family since we had an infant.

Moreover, the house is located in a great neighborhood. I went on a few runs in the vicinity and found that I was just minutes from a beautiful park, trails, lots of fun shops, restaurants, etc.

I couldn't recommend this home and the hosts more highly!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Brigid and David Kaelin-Caldwell's home. Their home was very clean and comfortable in a very quiet neighborhood.

  • Brigid and David's house was such a blessing to us! If you have a child and need a place to stay this is the place! They provide a crib, changing table, high chair, etc AND toys! Our son was in heaven! It was so nice to stay in a place that was child proofed so we didn't have to worry about our little one getting into everything. Brigid and David were very accommodating, stayed out of the way and even flexed to allow us to stay an extra night. Great house, great location, great couple. We hope to get to know them better!

  • Brigid's and David's house was absolutely perfect for our large family who gathered together for the week prior to our daughter's wedding! We took over the whole house, and the comfortable, relaxed atmosphere helped us feel completely at home while in Louisville. The neighborhood's location was ideal -- an easy drive to most anywhere in Louisville. Brigid is an excellent communicator, super clear in all her messages, and hospitable as could be. We would highly recommend a stay in Brigid and David's home.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Brigid and David's house. They have created a home where everyone feels comfortable. It is in the perfect location, the neighbors were friendly, and had ample space for my brother and i to spread out. Being able to start and end the day sitting in their backyard was an added bonus. For anyone looking for a place in Louisville, this is the place.

Brigid is a Louisville native, but David is from West Texas. We've been married for two years and have an 18-month old boy who we hope to send to college someday -- our AirBnB income goes directly into the wee boy's college fund. We spent two years living in Scotland, where our son was born, and we absolutely love travel. Now that we're back in Louisville (and not traveling as much), we've enjoyed meeting the people that AirBnB has led to us. We love adventure, food, whisk[e]y, live music, libraries, castles, cobblestone paths, soccer, travel, flip-charts, historical markers, innovation, talks with good friends.... the list goes on. David is a consultant, and Brigid is a professional musician. This home is our primary residence, but we stay with nearby family while it is rented. We are also open to renting out just the guest bedroom or basement room, rather than the entire home. Send an inquiry; we love hosting people.
