Plaza Mayor: The origins of the square date back to the fifteenth century, when the confluence of roads (streets today) of Toledo and Atocha, just outside the medieval village, was held on this site, known as "Plaza del Arrabal" the main market of the villa, built at this time a first home arcades, or market, to regulate trade in the square. In 1580, having moved the court to Madrid in 1561, Felipe II ordered the remodeling of the Plaza to Juan de Herrera, starting the demolition of the "houses of blocks" of the old place that year. The construction of the first building of the new square, the Casa de la Panaderia, began in 1590, the site of the old fish market, concluding in 1619, during the reign of Felipe III.
The Puerta del Sol was one of the gates in the wall that surrounded Madrid in the XV Century and its name was given because of a ‘sun’ painted on the door. In its origins, this place was an exterior area in Madrid but little by little, the city was growing and the Puerta del Sol became in the point of departure. Nowadays is the nerve center in Madrid and it is symbolized at the ‘zero kilometer’ plaque. From this point start all the Spanish highways. The most outstanding building in this square is the Casa de Correos, built in 1768 and that nowadays houses the regional Government of the Community of Madrid, it’s oldest building in the Puerta del Sol and it highlights the clock tower, whose bells of the night of 31st December marked the traditional twelve grapes for the majority of the spanish people. The Puerta del Sol has been reformed through the history. In the nineties it was placed an equestrian sculpture of King Carlos III, designed by the Spanish artists Eduardo Zancada y Miguel Ángel Rodríguez. Besides, there is another typical place to visit at Puerta del Sol: the ‘Oso y el Madroño’ monument (The bear and the strawberry tree). This place has turned into a symbol of the city and it’s a meeting point for the madrileños since 1967.
